750cc opposed cylinders, built in 1942, around 1,000"produced for the military only.

And shaft drive to boot. It would be interesting to see where HD would be now if the army hadn't discontinued the XA's orders and continued on with the traditional VTwin WLA

Yup, I always thought it was funny when the metrics made such a big deal over the shaft drive bikes in the 70's, like they were the first to create such a thing!

If my memory is correct Harley was trying to copy the BMW/ or Zundap shaft drive bikes used in North Africa campaign in WWII since they were so good in the sand. Not sure what other brands had shafts before HD but Harley wasn't the first one.
