Garmin Road Tech sun visor
« on: January 11, 2015, 04:34:15 PM »

On my old Street Pilot I used the cloth one from Glarestomper.  However, over time it lost it's shape and eventually became more of a nusence than a help.

For the Gramin Road Tech 660 that comes stock on the CVO Ultra Classics I'm considering a rigid mount sun visor much like I have on my RV gps unit.  Has anybody used one of these products and if so, your opinion and thoughts please:

This one carries the Garmin brand name however, it's not available on their web site.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/221655675482?lpid=82&chn=ps

This one is from Touratech....  http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/1735/PN-065-0158/Sunshade-for-Garmin-Zumo-660-665-GPS

In either case, I think I would mount the visor with 3M double sided tape.  Which 3M tape to use in this kind of application has to be considered.....vibration, constant exposure to UV, would I ever need to remove it to store the gps in it's case (not likely), etc. etc.

Any input on these or other sun visor products for this gps and other adhesive considerations, views and opinions is greatly appreciated.

neither one of those options look like they are big enough to provide much shade.  however, i'm thinking that maybe the ebay one would provide enough of a stable base to affix a glarestomper to.  i have the glarestomper, but i really didn't want to stick velcro to the zumo so was trying to figure out an alternate way to attach.

thanks for the link, i'm gonna give the ebay one a shot.  only gonna go with a different link, same seller, but with free shipping, it's only $8.99    :2vrolijk_21:

This one costs 3x as much, but it has much more overhang on top and the sides, so it blocks the sun much better:

I do use this one, and went out to measure the overhang.  It sticks forward 2.5 inches (both the top and the sides), compared to 1.1 inches for the eBay item and a little more for the Touratech.  Pics follow.  From the side front:

Those two may be better choice's. I have the Garmin clip on for the 665 and there is no noticable difference unless the sun is directly in front of you. Was disappointed.

That would be nice.  I find this hood helps, but still wish the daytime screen was a lot brighter.  It's still kinda washed out during the day.

All the gps units that I've seen on bikes is washed out if the sun is behind you.  Just the nature of the beast but I found the Glarestomper helped.....until it lost it's shape to the point that it was more like a flap.

DC, regarding this one you're showing pictures of.....how tall are you?  I'm tall (I used to be 6'4" but think I'm down to 6'3" now. lol).   I'm wondering if your sunvisor sticks out so far that I'd not be able to see all of the screen unless I bent over to see it?

JCZ,

With your height, I'd guess the up-angle you need to see the screen would be a problem.  I'm 5'7", so I angle the GPS down more than you could.  I ran into that problem in a different way.

I have a SERGU and moved my GPS from the handlebars to the speedo/tach nacelle with an Iron Aces mount.  Then the GPS faced the sky, so I got the hood for it.  That helped, but not nearly enough, so I put on a swivel mount. With the swivel to aim the GPS level, it works better.

Not sure what else to recommend.  I tried one of those "polarized" plastic screen covers on my Garmin 550, but it didn't do much to reduce glare.

Hope you find something that works.

Take a length of the green wire florists use when making their arrangements and thread it around the outside hem of the Glarestomper.  It will give some rigidity to the shade.  I've read of others using pipe cleaners but I think that might be a bit too large.  I used the floral wire on my Glarestomper for several years until I added a swivel mount (Pro-Fit E-Z Swivel EZ-1026) that allows me to move the Zumo if I need to because of glare.  A member posted about the swivel several years ago.  It is available from multiple vendors.  I got mine from Crutchfield.

I find polarized sunglasses are more of a problem with reading the Zumo than is sun-glare.

But, there have been a few times I found myself shading the gadget with my hand to get a reading on it.

The products I've seen might be good for directly overhead sun, but when it is high behind the rider, will be useless.

To date, I muddle through and hope to be able to read it when needed.

I bought this one.  They're not to fast on shipping (8 days to put it in the mail and 3 days to get to San Diego from the east coast) but it is much, much more effective than the glarestomper that I had on my last two bikes.

I posed the question about being able to see the entire screen, being so tall.  I do have to lean forward and down just a bit to read the print across the top if I'm so inclined.  Small issue compared to it being much more effective.  Not 100% if that sun is just over your shoulder and directly behind you but far better than the glarestomper.

Now I have to find something for my Escort Passport Max radar/laser detector.  By the way, the second best money I've spent on an electronic item and it's paid for itself several times over in the first year. :2vrolijk_21:
