Slow and Steady or Quick and Fast?? (Throttle Question)
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:55:09 PM »

So I was behind a guy the other day that was cruising down the street and kept throttling up and down (gunning it) to go (not pass....just the flow of traffic).  I have always used the throttle similar to a car in the sense that I apply a steady pressure to go fast or slower according to traffic.  I see a lot of guys ride this way in addition to revving at stop lights for seemingly no good reason.  Am I missing something?  Is it better to "gun" the gas up and down or just slowly gas and ease off the throttle slowly?

See the third video under the George Carlin thread in the humor section. That should explain it. :huepfenlol2:

To some its a holdover from the days of carburetors. Back in the day a quick blip of the throttle smoothed the transition from the idle jet to the main jet without a stumble. But with FI a blip is not needed, so all they are really doing is making noise.

Yep! That made sense to clear the carb back in the day. Pretty useless nowadays. I spent a good deal of time fiddling around with the jets and slide needle on the CV carb on my old '95 Evo FLHTP.

But... if I rev the CHIT out of my engine at stop lights, will I be a Bad-Ass, too? LOL

And makes your motor run hotter if you're going slow or stopped and doing this.

I found myself reving my first fuel injected motor, a buddy made fun of me and i stopped doing it ever since. But I do find myself reving a little once the light turns green just to let out the clutch. I still say i have a little air in my clutch line.

While it may have been true with a poorly tuned carb bike, I never had the need to rev my engines on all the carb bikes I owned from 1966 thru 2004.  I had no problem letting the bike idle normally and then ease out the clutch while smoothly applying throttle.  I still believe the single biggest reason we see people sitting at traffic lights revving their engines has to do with the "look at me, aren't I cool?" jerks on the seat.  I tend to lump them into the same category as those obnoxious youngsters who slowly cruise neighborhoods in their $1k beater cars with $5k sound systems cranked up to ear bleeding levels.  I guess some people can't get attention by being truly good at something, so the next best thing is to get attention by being obnoxious.

Look over your shoulder for either law-dogs or curvaceous witnesses.  Make a command decision.
