Not in Connecticut, from our Dept of Motor Vehicle website ---

"(c) Official number plates when displayed upon motor vehicles shall be entirely unobscured and the numerals and letters thereon shall be plainly legible at all times. Such number plates shall be horizontal, and shall be fastened so as not to swing and, during the time when a motor vehicle is required to display lights, the rear number plate shall be so illuminated as to be legible at a distance of fifty feet. Nothing may be affixed to a motor vehicle or to the official number plates displayed on such vehicle that obscures or impairs the visibility of any information on such number plates."  - it goes on to further define the proper dispaly of the registration plates --

Although I've never had an issue in over ten years of riding the Fatboy with  a vertically mounted / and partially obscured (by the saddlebag when used) plate......

Maybe they're distracted  ;)

Not legal in California.....asked a CHP officer what the penalty would be....told me if he was in a good mood it would be overlooked......he wouldn't put that in writing however nor would he vouch for other officers.... :nervous:  :nervous:  :nervous:
Other options could be a 'fix-it' ticket or fine.....

You could always go w/a rotating plate such as this one - MeanCycles Roto Plate... I would bet there are others that do the same thing. This way you could have it vertical when you wanted and turn it horizontal when needed.

As long as something ( tinted windows, vertical plate, etc) is allowed where the vehicle is registered it can be operated in all states legally.

What about handle bar height?  Some states crack down on that at rally sites and I'm not sure that "it's legal in my state" would bar one from a citation.

That, my friend, is a damn good question. And I don't have an answer. I should, but I don't. I have seen first hand what you speak of. I am starting to think that these particular cites are handed out with the philosophy of: It can be fought and beat in court if it is in fact legal in your home state, but how many are willing to stick around to fight it? Always easier to pay the monetary fine and be done with it. Maybe someone with the "inside knowledge" from a rally state can chime in.

Not legal in California (though not enforced):

Vehicle Code Section 5201 states: “License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that the characters are upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground, except as follows:”
