Who knows about Sporty's???

Contemplating a used sporty for a hot rod / throw a leg over and go bike.
Is there a best year?
Is there years to stay away from? I probably wouldn't go older than a 2000.
How are the carb'd model compared to the fuel injected?

Any insight would be appreciated.

I would stay away from the prior to 2004 models. From 2004 till now have rubber mount engines.
I like the 1200 customs. JMHO!

My 1st Harley was a Sportster.
I imagine a fair share of us on this forum had a Sporty at some point.
Mine was a XL1200C - pre-2004... Shook like a pint shaker above 65 or so.
Was damn quick and a LOT of fun.
And I personally still LOVE the look of a peanut tank Sportster.
Matter of fact, I still look at 'em and wish I could through a leg over and take a (short) spin!
I wouldn't shy away from a Sportster...

Yup, first Harley was a 1988 sporty. Still got it too. Sitting in the garage next to the two dressers. I really should do something with it someday.......

My bride has a '96 XL-1200, but I don't always tell her I've borrowed it for some well needed wrist therapy at Dr. David son's down the road...a ways.

First bike was an Iron 883 and i traded to a big twin. I was thinking of getting another one to use for commuting and riding around town...but forward controls are a must, those mid controls are terrible.

Yup, I agree, had mid controls years ago and weren't even a consideration once I realized both were available.

Rick, I've had the pleasure? of owning 4 sportsters over the years.  A '79, '01, '09 and a '13.  None were a first bike for me but the '09 1200 was a first road bike for my wife.  She fell for the '13 883 Superlow so the 1200 went by the wayside.
I loved my '79 but it was a bit of a bear to maintain.  The '01 was a 1200 I bought on a whim.  Was a fun bike to piddle with but, like the '79, it would vibrate the fillings out of your teeth.  The '01 had a sweet spot at 52 and another at 64....otherwise it was vibration city.  Again, it was a carb bike so tuning was fun for me as I like to tinker and tweak.
Both the '09 and '13 were in another zip code when it came to comfort for a sportster.  No or very little vibration, smooth running and the addition of fuel injection was a god-send for the sporty's evolution.  They both needed another gear, however.  Not so much the 883 as it was more of a putter (my wife loved that bike) but if that '09 1200 had another gear/OD, I would be very comfortable taking it on a long tour...it was that comfortable compared to the others I've ridden.
I personally love the sporty.  It's evolved from the starter bike status to more of a longer term "keeper" IMO.  If you don't mind the vibration and want the carburetor experience, stick with the mid-late 90's/early 2000's models.
Good luck in whatever you choose and keep us posted

You guys must all be pups!  My first Harley was a 1967 XLH Sportster.  900 CC, with Saddle Bags and a Windshield.  Purple & White.  Good memories.  Next one was a 1972 XLCH.  1000 CC.  AMF.  Junk.  Not so many good memories.  8) Later--HUBBARD

Hmmm....with all the history and love shown for the sportster maybe the MoCo should do a CVO Sportster.
....or maybe not.  :nixweiss:

It would be $25,000 and still not as cool as an Indian Scout.  By the way my wife had an '02 Sporty 1200.  She hated that bike.
