The right sound - Baffles and Pipes
« on: January 20, 2015, 12:29:38 PM »

I am sure this is a dead horse being beaten again, but I cannot for the life of me get the right sound.  Do I really have to buy true duals?  I have factory header pipes, no Cat.  V&H Monster Rounds with the baffle cut down, and Big city thunder baffles in the header but it still isnt right.  I have been experimenting with muffler packing at different thicknesses and might be getting close, but still I want the deep rumble with a little edge on rapping the throttle.  Ideas?

The "Harley" sound is different for everyone. I would suggest going to a rally or poker run and find the sound YOU like and find out what head pipe and mufflers they are using. It is a much cheaper way than experimenting.

From reading your post, it looks as though you're more interested in the noise rather than the performance....have you considered a Thunderheader?

X2 on the thunderheader!!!  Get a two into one and you will have performance and the noise factor i think your looking for. It will definitely bark when you crack the throttle and pi$$ off the neighbors. I had this setup on my 2004 seeg and loved it. Good luck

What made you cut the Monster Rounds? I had Monster Ovals with Power Duals on my old bike and loved the sound. Spend some time on You Tube checking out clips and go to your local bike night and look around before drop more coin for something you're not happy with ... you can always sell what you don't like.

,
Your not going to believe me, but since you asked you are never going to find that elusive perfect sound, with one set of mufflers, I have spent years swapping pipes baffles headers tru duals etc and some sound better at idle, some while under throttle and others when cruising, and others just obnoxiously loud, I realize sound is a very subjective subject but I have a set of Screamin Eagle Touring Mufflers, on now fitted with Fullsac 13/4 baffles that  sound decent run well, and look  good, Im trying to live with them lol they aren't perfect, but I have mufflers stacked up like cord wood, some in the basement some in my loft that aren't perfect either I have a decent welder and chop saw so I can use stock muffler inlets and outlets and insert any brand baffle, I would suggest finding a combination that you can life with and keeping them, it will save you tons of labor and money, Good Luck

Glen,
I had the fuelmoto FLH E-Series Mufflers and jackpot 2-1-2 headers installed and it has a great deep low base rumble at idle. A great growl when you get on the throttle.  And a good tone at cruising speed.   It's more like a muscle car sound in lieu of top fuel dragster sound.

Vance & Hines Power Duals and Monster rounds on 2014 CVO Road King. Love it. Nice rumble at idle and a lot of bark at full throttle . A little too loud with True duals though (I have the same set up with true duals on another bike) but perfect with Power duals (2-1-2)

Also...when talking about sound you need to define what you are looking for.....like an idle potato-potato lope of the old carburetor motor or sharp loud pounding during acceleration or the deep reverberation during deceleration or a mild rumble during a steady cruise.

Header and muffler can only do so much....I think the cams and compression have a lot to do with sound also.

The best sounding FIE late model harley I've heard was a 96ci Softail stage 1 air filter with true dual long shot cannon and HD's 204 cams.
