That
Is
Ugly...

Looks like that was ran for quite a while before it was discovered and I'm certain you need more than a set of lifters to fix it.

If that lifter came out of the same engine of a friend that you posted about recently (cam chain tensioners), I'm afraid your friend has a whole lot more to worry about than tensioners and lifters.  I'm amazed the engine continued running long enough to eat up that roller like that, before contact with the lifter body finally broke out that big chunk, without the rider knowing about it.

I would really love to know if those lifters came from a pre- year model 2012 or earlier bike or 2013 and after year model bike. I would also love to know how many miles were on it :nixweiss:

Also, next time you need to re-size the pic. Took it a full minute to load & I got a pretty good laptop.

No, No I fear I am unintentionally misleading you. I'll tell the story.

My pal, the one with the half worn tensioners in the Heritage Soft tail Decided to replace them with the Gyco ones. He contacted the USA supplier and they directed him to the UK supplier. Having contacted the UK supplier and ordered his stuff he got talking to him and, on my behalf I suppose, asked him if there was any residual problems with CVO 110 engines. the UK supplier then said yes there are lifter and valve spring issues and copied the above photograph to my pal. I assumed to demonstrate the extent of the problems that can occur in CVO 110 engines. I assumed, not knowing any different, that the lifter was out of a 110 engine he had repaired. However it seems, from your guarded comment, that perhaps  the lifter is not out of a 110 engine after all. I apologise if this is the case, no intentional misinformation was posted by me. I just wanted to create a discussion around the subject. Anyway, although I have not got any issues at present, with the bike that is, given that it has done 16k miles I intend to replace the lifters and valve springs. After market lifters and "beehive" valve springs. The intention being to reduce the valve train load and hopefully pre empt any problems with cam bearings.

Again sorry for any confusion. JohnT

Actually it could have very well come out of a 110 engine. From what I have been told and read on here there were numerous lifter failures on 2012 year model and a few years earlier bikes. Harley upgraded the lifters in 2013. I have a 2013 SERK with right at 25,000 miles on it but the lifters still have me nervous because I have not been able to find any large number of folks with a 2013 or later 110 engine with more miles than me. Therefore, I kind of feel like a guinea pig. I do plan to turn mine into a 113 this spring, so I will change the lifters and have head work done at that time to try to make sure I don't have any issues.

Spring tension is an issue. Hyd lifters are rated to handle only so much spring pressure. Run them over the limit and over time it will damage the lifter. The 255 cam although not a large cam is in fact a aggressive ramp profile. Add the ramp and overly high spring pressure and the end result is broken parts.

I still see posts  stating that the stock springs are fine and no reason to replace them.

Simple mod to swap lifters to a higher quality item.. Any avg DIY guy can handle that job in his garage.
