Anyone cool your wet head 110 ??
« on: January 25, 2015, 11:38:34 AM »

Previous touring bikes: 2007 Ultra w/true duals, stage one, etc.; 2010 Limited w/true duals, stage one etc.  I bought a new 2014 CVO last August.  I left the dealership on a 80 degree day & drove about 10 miles, nice highway 55mph to first stop sign.  Bike kicked into limp mode.  Hottest SOB I've ever ridden.  Drove about another 10 mile 55mph to next stop @ convenience mart.  Limp mode into parking lot.  The pattern continued throughout the summer until the weather cooled down to 70 or less.  I spoke to dealer who said I must have an exceptionally warm runner.  I wanted to keep this bike fairly stock.  CVO stock mufflers sound fine.  I ran the bike about 1100 miles & took it in for 1000 mile check & purchased a decatted head pipe.  Dealer still has bike due to fabulous Pennsylvania winter weather.  I'm curious if any others suffered same issues and if they had to go to stage one to solve problem.  110 runs much better than my previous 103 w/stage one, so no need to upgrade for power.  It's just hot!

THANKS for the replies.  I know how to cool the bike.  I just didn't expect to have to do it to this bike.  I was hoping water cooled might eliminate some of the heat.  I know there are a lot 14-15 bikes out there.  I only put 1200 miles on mine before winter shut things down.  Is mine unusually hot? Or, as the service manager said "their all like that".

similar to other 110" in terms of heat.  They are set up to run lean to meet EPA requirements.  Understand you like the power as is, but with some minor mods to deal with the heat you will unleash some hidden power.  If you like the stock mufflers, I would suggest you look at fulsac.com.  He can set up with a new de-cated head pipe that will use stock headshields and also muffler cores to keep original mufflers, couple with a tuner to bring the AFR ratio to something more reasonable.  This will drop the heat down and give you a little more power at the same time.  Steve at Fulsac will set up a TTS Mastertune with a pre-loaded map, but personally nothing beats a custome dynotune.  You should in to local tuners and what module they prefer (TTS, PCV, SE).

I wrote mine today in 80 degree heat with no heat issues whatsoever.  Still, I plan to wake it up a little bit which will also cool the motor. I sent an inquiry to Steve George at Fullsac Performance.  He is well known and respected of this forum.  Here was his reply:

Hi Greg

Congrats on the new bike! I just tuned one of those on Monday. Here's the CVO stage I package. I would encourage you to try the 1.75 cores. They are only slightly louder than stock at cruise and will make a substantial increase in TQ over the stock CVO muffler cores and packing arrangement. If your careful removing the stock baffles you can always go back top stock if needed.

DX Pipe                     476.00
TTS with cables          399.00, custom fuel map included
1.75 Power cores          107.00
Muffler sleeves             53.00
Total                          1035.00

Thanks!

What are you calling "limp mode"?  Limp home mode refers to an electronic throttle control strategy that allows you to ride slowly at greatly reduced throttle openings when a fault occurs.  Are you perhaps talking about the EITMS (Engine Idle Temperature Management System), which shuts down the rear cylinder at idle?  If you're talking about the EITMS, it works differently than in previous years on a Twin Cooled "Rushed More" bike.  It uses ambient temperature, not engine temperature, to determine when to engage.  So if that is your real concern, cooling the engine down isn't going to fix that problem because the EITMS will kick in any time ambient air temperatures are 80°F or higher.  Turn off the EITMS instead.

I am referring to the rear cylinder shut off and turning it off will not reduce the heat.

I didn't say it would, just mentioned that if what you were really upset about was the EITMS kicking in then doing anything to reduce the engine temperature won't affect how the new EITMS system works.

Jerry, you are correct, EITMS comes on at 80F if not disabled.  Hate that with a passion.  My older bikes it was engine temp based.  This 15 runs cooler, but if enabled the EITMS came on much soon, even with a cooler engine temp.  So far mine has been disabled since the day after I got the bike.

Sounds like Stashkat thinks thinks the Eitms kicking on indicates the engine is hot, this, as Jerry explained, has noting to do with engine being hot on the new bikes. If you leave it engaged, no matter what kind of tune you have it will activate when temp (ambient) says it should. Turn it off, I used mine one day after purchase then turned it off.

Turned off the EITMS before I left the dealer parking lot.  Never had it turned on since.

Being basically lazy, how do you turn it off on a 2015 CVOSG?

It the procedure the same for a 2009 SG?

Regards

Procedure is different.  You have to change with with the bike off, from the touch screen.

The Vance and Hines headpipe (power dual) with CVO stock mufflers and SEPRT download is easy way to drop some heat. I always left the old style ETMS on but if this is going off ambient air temp I might change my mind. Seems like it never really affected anything anyways, just sounds a little silly in traffic.
