SE Pro Performance Mufflers
« on: December 31, 2006, 07:54:01 PM »

I am  :o ing a pair of SE Pro Performance Mufflers for my SEI2 and wondered if anyone has any experience, comments or thoughts about them.   I've heard some good things but also that they are loud and I heard one guy said he'd had some trouble with the baffle packing.  I am looking for better sound than the stockers and if there is little bump in performance, that would be an added bonus.

Thus far on mine, I've installed a SE Air Cleaner and had the dealer download the 1550 Stage 1 Map that came with the Air Cleaner.  Will I likely need to go to a different map with the new muffler setup?

Cheers and Happy New Year,

BlueSEI2

I was running the SE Pros on my SEUC (103) for about 7 months and really liked them.  I recently went to True Duals for other reasons, but was happy with the sound from the SE Slips.  In my opinion, it is important to get the ones with the billet end caps and not the one-piece, as they sound completely different.  The SE's will get a little louder when they get some miles on them, but had no problems with mine up to 7K.  They are not making those pipes any longer (not from HD anyway), but you might still scare up a pair if you search.  The dealer should have a DT Flash for the SE filter and SE pipes.  It would depend on what flash they installed as to whether you would need a new flash.  The pipes do breathe much better than stock.  For sound/loudness...I don't know what you've had an opportunity to hear, but subjectively, if I were rating them compared to my Rineharts, with the RH's being a 10, the stock being 1, I would say they are about a 6 or 7 after they are broken in.  They do give the motor a voice...nice deep throaty sound for the part number with the billet ends.  The other model sounds "Tinney" to my ear.

I'm thinking of selling mine if you're interested.  PM me if you would like to discuss.

Blue your  bike has better mufflers on it than you can buy that is if it has the factory ones on it if you want it louder look up in the muffler it has 2 holes one is blocked with a plug take a screwdriver and a hammer knock the plug out and it will be louder and by the way screaming eagle made your factory muffler.

I have the SE Slip-ons and agree with the comments posted by TCnBham.  Sound is far superior when compared to stock (a nice deep throaty note), though you can't compare them to the Rineharts which are more distinct and louder.  TCnBham also makes mention of the different pipes in this classification, the one piece touring slip-ons (the new version is 80491-07 I think) do have a very "tinney" sound when compared to the 65115-98B with the billet end caps.  The older pipes can still be found on occasion (new and used) on eBay.  My .02 cents worth.

I too looked to have a bit more bark in the exhaust and not a full screaming exhaust like some I have had on other bikes.

I picked up a set of SE Pro's from 103tHunDer here awhile back and like them very much.  We made a 500 mile one day run up to Canada and a return a few days later and the wife never complained about the level of sound and when asked said she liked the sound.

The are, as TC said, a gain in db's of about half over the stock pipes.  The billet ends look great and come in several styles.

Here's the right side.

It's the 98B part number you want, mentioned above.  Heres a photo of my bike with the pipes on it.

One thing about the FLTRSEI2, they are very temper-mental  to change.  I've tried some, to no avail. ( except for a PC-USB tweak ) Stock is where its at with this bike.
I did find out that Kerker actually made the original mufflers that the 00 and 01 bikes were tuned for. Although HD did not ship the bikes with that muffler they can still be found in CCI. I've not heard them but they give a bit better performance and sound.

Thanks to everyone for the great input - the pictures (Rjob749) were very helpful as well.  Sounds like the conscensus is that the SE Pros are a solid choice.

Blue, you should really do a little more research before you part with your cash. It already sounds like your dealer may have got some of it, selling you something you didn't need.

If you are into the total performance of "this" bike DON'T jack with it too much.

The MM fuel injection is not like the current Delphi system. It does not play well with others. But MM works well with the proper tuning. If you do some checking, some of the big horse power boys are going back to this type of system.

This is just some learned advice, take it however.

Scooterhair,

Thanks for your thoughts and advice.  Total performance is not my primary goal.  I wanted better sound and (sorry to the purists  :)) but I am not crazy about the fishtail end caps.  I ran across someone who had a nice set of SE Pros and thought rather than buy new end caps and new baffles, I'd try the SEs and as I said in the earlier posts, if it also gives me a little performance kick, then that would be a bonus....

I'm not planning any performance upgrades beyond the SE air cleaner and mufflers.  If I were to do anything more, I'd probably check into a six-speed gearset.

That's why I posted this..to get some ideas and suggestions and yours (and everyone's) is much appreciated.

Bluesei2 and Scooterhair,

If you are thinking of some basic bolt on mods, I have some you may want to look at.
They all came off my '01 95" Ultra before I went Zippers.

A Dakota Kid M&M Throttle Body that has been bored to 43mm, with the Hi-Flow fuel pressure regulator, and larger red injectors. It comes with an SE air cleaner.

I also have an M&M ECM and S.E.R.T unit to tune it.

Let me know if you are interested in these bolt on mods.

Thanks, I got them from a guy with real good taste [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

They are working out fine and accomplished what I was looking for at the time for sure.

The end caps do seem to be the difference in the sound. They evidently act like resonators. On of my riding buddies (Cappy) has the slash cut Pro Performance muffs that don't require end caps and the difference in sound is very noticable even though the internals of both muffs are supposed to be the same. Here's the best endorsement I can think of for the 65115-98B muffs. My bro Beags is like the world's biggest proponent of Hooker exhaust systems and after he rode LD with the 103 upgrade AND the Doherty Power Pacc, I asked him - - " well bro, what do you think? The Doherty blew the doors off the SE breather, should we put those Hooker slip ons I've got hanging around on it ? "   His answer was " nope, it's good the way it is " As a rule, I believe in matched parts which is why I went to Chicago H-D for these muffs in the first place. I know the MoCo is out to feather it's own nest with it's recommendations for user all of their parts, but I honestly believe these muffs work as well as any slip on available. I'm not gonna compare them to a true-dual or a 2 into 1 system, but IMHO they are as good as any slip on available and the sound is pure H-D.
