Let's talk radar detectors.....
« on: January 27, 2015, 11:44:34 AM »

Before I bought one I had talked with several members of this forum that owned one currently or at some point in the past.  The biggest issue with all of them was the false signals/readings that they'd get.  I started doing research and believe I even posted on this forum, asking questions.

Eventually, in Nov. 2013 I bought the Escort Passport Max.  All the reviews and comparisons had it listed as the #1 detector at that time, even though it was nearly half the cost of other detectors in the comparisons.  I have to say that while I was averaging a ticket a year up to this point, I have not gotten a ticket since owning this detector.  Partly because of the warning when I exceed the posted limit but mostly because it's warned me far in advance of radar with very minimal false reading/signals.

Now the Passport Max 2 is out with the updated Bluetooth technology.  Here's a review by Radar Roy.....

Yea, that's a thought.  Especially since I don't have the speeding ticket avoidance system that you have.   ;)

While not quite the same as yours, the Passport Max is working pretty well.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have a couple Escort Passport Radar Detectors and use them but not all the time. More so in the trucks. Really more so when traveling rather then in town.

However, I don't do crazy fast speeds, generally about 7 over the limit. (or at least try) I prefer to be the third truck/car in line. And I am general in the right lane and let the fast car be in front of me in the left lane.

What I do use MORE, and seems to work really well is the "Waze" app. It's free, a social media type app, real time, shows traffic jams, 5-0 reporting, red light cameras, cars stopped on the road, construction zones, etc, etc.  It's also a GPS, shows POI, school zones, and I'm sure more that I didn't even mention.

It's nice that you can have your Pandora on, listening to music and use this app. If something comes up, it over rides the music.

It's amazing how many folks that are on the road that use this app. as you can see them as you pass by.

We also use WAZE. The traffic info really helps.

Seems that Waze Ap is getting pushback from police unions since it is used to identify officer locations. I'm kinda leaning to the side of the officers with all the crazy anti police stuff happening. I know I wouldn't want my brother targeted by someone using the Waze Ap. I don't mind the detectors but making an officers location public can be an issue.

I do know what Waze is and does, but we're off topic so back to Radar detectors for JC.  :2vrolijk_21:

Assuming that you do then it means the police unions you spoke of don't understand it.
JC is always looking for anything that will keep him out of trouble.
The WAZE is a good app. Knowing the police locations is no different than someone who blinks their lights letting you know a cop is close.
And it is most helpful dealing with traffic jams.

You're right Chip....tryin to stay out of trouble.  ;)

I tried Bill's method mentioned above....just slowing down.  Tried that for many, many years and that method got me a whole lot of tickets in my life.  The more I researched radar detectors, the more that I learned that many people use them as an aide to warn them when they are over the posted speed limit.

Now I've never been accused of being slow at anything in my life.  I've always been pedal to the metal (in this case, literally) in everything I've done.  Hell, walking around this construction project people are constantly telling me to slow down but this is just part of who I am.  As I mentioned in a post above, a big part of the advantage of having this unit...at least for me....is it does announce ever time I creep above the posted speed.....thereby initiating more acute awareness of my speed, regardless of what everybody around me is doing (try driving 65 mph on a California freeway  :P ).

Having said that, I've rode with quite a number of LEOs and some of them have an arrogance of what they can get away with because they carry a shield.  And, they were city PD, sherriff and CHP.  I asked them about it at one of our stops and the response was "because we can" as he flashed his badge and the others joined in.  That situation was a 90 mph ride up over the Sierra Nevada Mountains on I-80.  I will say that I've rode with a number of LEO that are members of this forum and I haven't experienced that attitude at all with these guys.

I will continue to use it for what it does for me.  I will try to keep it at no more than 5 mph over the limit.....................................................................................unless I'm riding out across the desert some where.....then  :nixweiss:

Yes, that unit is no longer the top position in any of the comparisons that I found on the net.  From what I've learned, while it's a good unit, the Max has very few false readings compared to all the others.  That thread is unit (make/model) specific....this one is for comments on all the makes and models of detectors.

I just bought mine a year and a half ago.  Now the Max 2 is the top contender.  Like anything electronic, give it a month or two and it'll be obsolete. :(
