Title: Polished Stainless Bolts (Transformation Kit)
Post by: Ed45 on December 21, 2009, 09:52:25 AM
I have switched out the galvanized stock bolts in previous bikes with polished stainless and am considering doing the same for the SEUC on order. Dealer switch-out is expensive (labor) but they will replace those involving the mods they will be doing (cams/exhaust). I will then do the remainder I can access and save the rest for subsequent shop work hoping to eventually get them all replaced. Have many of you swapped them out? I personally don't like the silver of galvanized against the chrome. I know its a detail but that's just me. Thanks

Have switched out a few and put hot toppers on the rest.

Went with the hot toppers, a lot less time than breaking all the bolts loose and risking a leak.

Went ahead and bit the bullet and had the dealer do it prior to delivery of my SESG... he didn't cut me a break, but it's done...labor was slightly less than the kit ... factory bolts always bug me, especially on the CVOs.

I put hot toppers on my Heritage in 1995 and they still look good. I have even taken some of them off and put them back on again with no problem. They  are also on my 09SEUC. They are easy and they don't rust because they are plastic. I also found that their customer service was great. CAHDBIKER

Hot toppers are the way to go for me.  I replaced what I could with chrome and  finished everything else with hot toppers.  Nice, clean look...withou the dirt or corrosion inside.

I think this was the way to go.

I replaced all hardware with 12 pt show polished ss

I have from a few builders that you can't get better bolts to hold touque then stock, not to create oil leaks

Educate me please. I have always thought the thread locker held the fastener. My other hobby is gunsmithing and I have a fairly extensive gun collection. I use the blue Lock-Tite (which I also use on my bikes) and have never experienced screw loosening in any of my guns (or bikes and the FatBoy has 90% stainless replacements). May be a poor example but can someone shed a little light here. Thanks, Ed

I don't think it's a poor example at all.  I use the "blue stuff" on just about all the critical fasteners on the bike and I can't remember when one vibrated loose...

I think the only case you might be able to make (as weak as it may be) that Grade 8 hardware is stronger than SS hardware.
But the rub is you are not connecting it to carbon steel anyway.

most connections in white metal do not allow the strength that grade 8 hardware could might afford you.

I do not know the grade of stock hardware but SS has almost the same as Grade 5, again the weak point is not the hardware but the case or attachment.

And yes Howie I was busting Balls on that post, I usually overlook a lot, but could not help myself.

Some can bust me later......

the real deal is the threads....

there are cut threads - and rolled threads and a whole range in between.....

the closer threads are to rolled threads the better they hold - regardless of what they are made from - so far i have not seen any stainless rolled threads but only stainless cut threads... these may be rolled stainless threads - if not the rolled thread will hold better than the cut thread all else being equal and the rolled thread will obtain a truer torque as well since it has less turning resistance - note that a cut thread can show a high tourge and still not be tight enough due to sliding friction of the thread itself.

harley A engines vibrate a LOT all the parts on the engine need to be treated like in the 70's..

any bolts ive ever had trouble with staying tight and holding ive gone to cat bolts - all rolled - grade 8 - very smooth nice threads, very good holding and good vibration resistance. in fact whenever i have engine bolts to replace on most anything i use cat bolts - just cant go wrong.

I got some Harley covers for the FB and they had these little prong things inside. You could just look at em and they'd pop off. That's when I wnt to the polished stainless bolts. I have used the Hot Toppers for my Springer with good success.

:2vrolijk_21: I am a CHR bolt person. I changed all the bolts on my '05 Heritage and will do the same on my '10 SEUC. I just wanted to get the more expensive stuff done 1st. Now I will start on the bolts.  Toppers are ok and look ok but I like the polished bolts. I never had any leaks either. They come with the locktite applied and just use your torque wrench replacing 1 at a time and you should be fine. :smash:

I've got all Diamond polished SS on one bike and Alloybolz polished SS on the other......both hold torque just fine and both hold up well thru on/off procedures with no rusting as with chromed ones.  And Hot Toppers look OK but are a 'hassle' during maintenence.  The stock fasteners don't look right on a CVO....JMHO.  har.  :drink: spyder

Chief (spoke to him over Christmas & they're doing fine) made an awesome spreadsheet of all the bolts needed along with cross referenced part numbers and pricing. I'll be damned is I can find it (Gary?).

:2vrolijk_21:No problem, I found the web sites for both suppliers/manufacturers. These are perfect. I believe either will be much better than the CHR. I am leaning towards Diamond right now. :orange: Thanx again. Gary

That's why you're "the man"! I knew you could find it. My .xls file has some numbers added to it while I was making a decision on what to buy. But Hogvet will get the general idea.

I've saved a lot of files that have been posted to my desktop (home) computer for times when needed but I'm on work laptop now. It is fun searching/finding stuff..... guess it's just the "investigator" in me that thrives on it. :nixweiss:
