110 Operating temperature
« on: February 07, 2007, 02:16:48 AM »

I am just curious what everyone's operating temperature is. I do understand outside air temp and weather do play in as factors as well as after-market parts.

I have just over 1000 miles on my new engine and have changed out the pipes to Samson Caliber true duels, SE A/C, SERT map 84. I also changed to AMSOIL in all three tanks, and I am now showing an oil temp at the digital dipstick of 225 degrees after a 20 mile ride on highway and residential area in 75 degree air temp.  :orange:

AJ,

Yeah you and I are running relatively the same set-up just a few different parts with similar temps. SO that is pretty good I just want to keep my bike under 250 degrees.

Life on the rock was wet today! I got soaked riding back from work this morning

I've been consistently running around 215 so far in ambient air temps up to around 70 degrees.  I'm sure come this summer, those temps will rise a little.  The highest I've gotten after being stuck in some heavy stop and go traffic was 255 (not taken during the actual stop and go, but about 2 miles later when I got back to the garage, so it may have been a little higher).  I'm running V&H duals and ovals, SEAC, SERT with custom (dyno'd) map, and Syn3 oil.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

I'm told 225 is the ideal operating temperature. My bike hasn't gotten over 210 deg but it hasn't been ridden in temps above 35 deg yet! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hoist, I know there have been some data posted about what temps various oils (dino, partial-syn, full syn) begin to break down.  Anyone have the links?

Hoist, having cold temps will bring the temp down a few degrees and even cloud cover and humidity can be slight factors. Look at NASCAR how different a car will run with a few clouds over head...lol I know the SE's aren't that temperamental but it does do something.

I think the problem here is that we don't know how hot the oil actually gets. All of the oil temp setups I know of only measure the cold oil before it returns to the engine, not the hot oil coming OUT of the engine.

While knowing the oil temperature in the pan is nice so we can see if it is getting hotter or colder, we really have no idea what the oil is as it leaves the hot engine, when it's at its hottest. To measure that, we'd need a sensor in the scavenge line from the oil pump or other spot close to that.

I don't know if I really want to know what that oil temp would be. We'd all probably chit a big one if we knew that number on a hot day sitting in traffic.

Laser thermometers are handy.  This is the one from NAPA auto parts.

I'd be willing to bet that this little unit is probably cheaper ( less exspensive that is) than the "oil temp dipstick" that Harley has to offer @ $135.99 + tax   :nixweiss:    I also would say that this unit would give you more of an idea of that your cylinder temp is, as opposed to the oil temp in the pan ...just my 2 cents   ;)

Just some things to pass along,

Even with a dyno on my 110 and the bike is set to 14.0 to 1 across the board my rear cylinder is turning yellow on the 110 label and I am noticing a bunch of heat there.   My rinehart tip on the rear cylinder has already turned red instead of black and I know my cylinders were tuned independenty and accurately.   That said I also had to have a rear head gasket replaced yesterday.  It was not blowing air by it just oil .... and the clean up begins.  Seems to have been a dimple in the gasket caused by ... unknown     I don't know if it was there or not from pickup or whether it just worsened until I could see the oil.

There has been some questions regarding the closed loop so I will share what was told to me.   The closed loop only works when after using a SERT that you go ahead and tune the bike then you have to reference the map you made back to the original settings.  The closed loop is supposed to be from 5 percent throttle to 50 percent throttle.   Good for gas mileage, but lousy if the guy tuning didnt set all the fuel to say 13.4 then tune the bike then reference back to the original A/F tables to set your V/E fuel correctly.   Effectively if he did not do this your no longer going to run in closed loop mode.  This should take approx 4 to 5 hours for those interested.

UB and All,

I started noticed a slight yellowing on my rear badge after some time on the SERT w pipes, etc.  I wondered why the heat was so intense on the rear. Now I will keep an eye on it now that I have installed the TMAX Closed Loop & Auto Tune. I am easily able to watch the AFR's for front and rear, so the problem MAY have been solved. I hope my only warranty claim will be a new shiny badge.

Ron,

Not sure its all related to just AFR in this case.   It maybe related to getting the heat out of the cylinder or cooling of the cylinder or a combination of both.   As you were there you know both cylinders were set equally and independently.   I may try and tune the bike again for 13.4 to 1 and see if it helps at all.   Seminole HD shop said that they arent seeing the heat problem with the 2 into 1's like they are on the true duals.  Not sure how suspect that is, but with Brian owning a 110 Roadking with the Rinehart 2 into 1 we should be able to tell over the next few months as he puts miles on the bike.  Jim B also likes the Rinehart 2 into 1 for making power on the 110 seems to be putting up the best numbers on his dyno.

It's always something to fool with.
