Zumo Powerlet Powerbar & Techmount quick disconnect install
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:10:45 PM »

Here are the pics of the Powerlet Powerbar, the Techmount 2 1/2" stem mount and Accessory Quick Change Adapter installed.

I did not want to permanently hard wire the Zumo cradle for various reasons battery drain, theft, weather, washing the bike, cleaner look etc.
I wanted no wires hanging and a quick and easy disconnect (less than 5 seconds) of the Zumo AND the cradle.

Here's how it turned out.

Powerbar w/Techmount stem:

With Zumo cradle and Accessory Quick Change Adapter:

With Zumo 550 mounted:

MP3's and the voice navigation play through the HD radio speakers using an Delphi Skifi FM modulator.
The FM modulator sounds GREAT. Much better audio quality than an FM transmitter.

I did not care for the appearance of the hanging wires to the cig lighter and aux jack as well as the safety factor.
I was concerned that the hanging wires might catch on something, possibly damaging a component or even worse
getting snagged and causing a riding mishap. This way, No Wires = No Worries.

I like the final results. Thanks again to all you folks for sharing your knowledge. Good Stuff!

Nice install. :2vrolijk_21: Was wondering how did you run the power up to the mount? Also could you supply some part numbers or links to the parts you used in this install. TIA.

Inside the handlebars back to the battery
I also ran the FM modulator audio output wire from inside the handlebars to FM modulator mounted on the side of the HD radio.

Boy, that's a very clean install.....I like it even better than the way the rest of us have been able to do it.  Are you running the power inside the bars?  And, you say you can remove the cradle and all in 5 minutes?  Very nice.  Now, if you'll figure out how to couple the XM radio to the 550 and deal w/ that fugley antenna/reciever, I'll be forever indebted.  ::) har!  :drink: spyder

spydglide, yes, I ran the power and audio inside the bars.
The first picture shows the Techmount stem with the Zumo and cradle removed. Hook up and removal takes less than 5 seconds!

Today I took it a set further and modified the audio AUX input on the HD radio.
I removed the Delphi FM modulator and added an AUX input to the back of the HD radio.
I did this for a bunch of reasons better sound quality, no components to fail, interference on FM stations, no wiring etc.

The instructions for this I found from the outstanding folks here at CVOHarley.com. GREAT STUFF!
http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=7674.0 and here
06 and up http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=10044.0

Without these instructions I would not have even thought about doing this. Boy am I glad I did it!

As far as the fugley antenna/receiver I do not have XM radio (yet...GRIN) but I would give a call to
http://www.techmounts.com/ ask for Dave or http://www.powerletproducts.com/ ask for Adam.

These folks have been very valuable in assisting me with this project. It was really easy! It took less than 20 minutes.

Clean install but why did you choose to place the power connection in the front instead of away from the rider?  Also, had you thought about putting the powerbar mount lower on the handlebars so the unit is behind the windshield?

I did not have enough clearance in the area between the handlebars and clutch cable area when I placed the power connector at the back. For appearance, I would have preferred to put the power connector in the back.

However, if the power connector would have fit in the back, the Zumo would have been about two inches closer to me. It might have been in my way if the power connector was in the back. I actually like the exact spot the Zumo sits in. The Zumo's current position is very comfortable and easy to use.

Personally, I placed the Zumo next to the controls so it was easier and quicker to access rather than a position lower on the bars.
For you, I would recommend putting some duct tape inside the powerbar handlebars opening then do a mock up by sliding them up and down the bars to find a spot that is comfortable for you.

Side note:
I may change to a right angle Powerlet connector and reduce the Zumo power wire length to clean it up a bit.
Although, the straight Powerlet connector and longer power cable is easy for my big fingers to connect and disconnect.
I'm still on the fence on that one.

Merlinii,

Great job on the install.  How tough was it putting the wires through the handlebar and ultimately to the power source?  Did you use or consider using the extra switch?

Looks good!

I still have external wiring to my 2730. I may switch it, your way really cleans it up. One question - how did you deal w/ the audio cable? Is it integrated into the powerbar somehow or did you have to run a second wire?

Thanks

No, the PPC-020-SC GARMIN ZUMO POWER CABLE is already assembled from Powerlet
It is a Short cable-SC at 12" in length.
It has a Garmin mount power connector on one end and the Powerlet PPL-002 straight plug on the other end.
That's probably why the cable costs $32.95

Yes, If you are refering to my reference to the 10" cable w/right angle plug.
When using the motorcycle wiring cable supplied from Garmin (in the box) cut 10-11 inches off the Garmin mount power connector end.
I had to cut this end off anyway to run this power wire inside the handlebars.
Then just order the right angle plug from Powerlet and connect the plug to the Garmin mount power connector.

I ran both the audio and Zumo power inside the handlebars.
I attached the audio the the additional AUX jack in the back of the HD radio.

Jim

Originally I used a Delphi FM modulator. This unit requires a power draw to activate it.
The way the Delphi FM modulator worked is...it connects to the SkiFi radio.
When the SkiFi radio is turned on (hence the power draw) it activates the FM modulator and it turns on.
At first I used the two bulbs for the draw. Then I used resistors, to eliminate the bulbs to activate the modulator.

Since then I have pulled the FM modulator out and installed a AUX input in the back of the HD radio.
Much cleaner sound, no worries about FM stations in different areas, no worries about component failure, a lot less wiring.

I wish I would have done the additional AUX input first. I took 15-20 minutes to do!

Go here
http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=detail&product_id=61

The plate you see horizontal in the picture will rotate to vertical. It is pre-drilled for a standard screw pattern, which is what Garmin uses.

The Zumo uses a rectangular cradle that is about 1/2" thick and then the Zumo snaps into the cradle.

Thanks,

Here is a link to the Techmount Quick Change Adapter

http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=detail&product_id=94

Be sure and use washers for spacers between the Quick Change Adapter and the Zumo Cradle.
Otherwise the supplied screws are a little too long and may scratch the Techmount plate.

Notice the space between the Zumo mount and the Quick Change Adapter.

Powerbar w/Techmount stem:

I'd like to do this, but I'm wondering if the Powerbar will fit with a hydraulic clutchm and of course, my chubby bars - any ideas?  Would be a bit of an expensive mistake to discover that there's not enough room or indeed that the slightly oval shape of the chubbies at that point make a fit impossible...

Where did you get the techmount riser that was screwed into the powerlet bracket?  I don't see a riser on either website that has a treads that can be used on the powerlet bracket.  Is there a part # for this riser?  Thanks

I notice you used the Powerbar Plus for 1¼" bars, so I guess that answers my question about it fitting the chubbies.

Still wondering about the space requirement with the hydraulic clutch though, and if the PowerBar won't be happy near the ovalled curve of the bars, I guess it would have to go "round the bend" as it were on the vertical-ish part of the bars. Would that mean using a different riser?

When you ran the wiring through the bars, did you drill a new hole, or dremel the housing to get access to the existing hole in the bars?

Problem: see above quote

solution: Stick it in the faring already

Result: you now owe me at least 1  :drink:

Agreed, stick the XM hockey puck in the fairing.

As far as the XM Hockey puck moving from bike the vehicle there is this solution # RAM-XM30BRK for $5.50

The Techmount for the Powerlet Powerbar is not on the wesite. You will need to call to order.

No holes drilled or modifications needed with the Chubbies.

As far as the hydraulic clutch...if you notice on mine I placed the Powerlet connector to the front.
This is socket is supposed to be at the back. (oh well, no big deal)
In my case I did not have enough room for the larger area of the Powerlet Powerbar in the rear.
This larger Powerbar socket area was in the way of my clutch cable.

"1) PPC-020-SC GARMIN ZUMO POWER CABLE
Short cable-SC at 12" in length w/Powerlet PPL-002 straight plug $32.95
(I might recommend a 10" cable and a right angle plug. It might be a cleaner look and easier to use.) "

Merlini, please forgive what may be an obvious question, but did you splice these 2 together?

No, I used these parts.

1) Sound Professionals SP-SPSC-7 Gold Plated  1/8” Right Angle Stereo Patch Cable - 8 inches $5? (wesite)
1) Radio Shack 274-886 Gold Plated female-female 1/8” coupler $11.00
2) Stainless 4mm screws from Ace Hardware $1.00
2) P clamps Ace Hardware (so cheap they were almost free)
1) Plastic cap (free)

and a little shrink wrap over the RS 274-886.

Thanks Merlinii - is there a part number?

1) PKT-068 bracket with socket assembly (no wiring harness for 1 1/4" bars) - Chrome
1) Techmount Riser 2 ½” inches / from Powerlet – Chrome Approx $50.00

I didn't have one. Although, when I spoke to the person there they knew exactly what I was looking for.
This is a new part and is does not have a part number yet.

NOTE:
For a clean install solder the power wires to the bottom of the Powerlet Socket.
For an easy install use small spade connectors. This will help if you need to remove the Powerbar.
(although, I can't think of a reason you would want too)

Things learned:

The screws that were supplied to mount the Techmount Accessory Quick Change Adapter to the Zumo mount were slightly too long. One of the 4 screws stuck out and put a small scratch on my chrome Techmount plate.

Check your clearance BEFORE attaching the Quck Change Adapter.

SOLUTION: I needed to put washers between the Zumo mount and the Accessory Quick
Change Adapter when I attached these together. No more problem.

I had to make steel sleeves to insert in the bottom of the Powerbar so I could make the Powerbar bracket secure on the handlebars.

SOLUTION: Two 4mm screws with a long collar so the P clamps can be attached on the
bottom of the Powerbar or I drilled two steel nuts that fit inside the sleeves so the Powerbar can be tightened.

Due to the height of the Powerlet Zumo power connector it is a little difficult to insert/remove from the socket. However, the Powerlet connector is large and easy to attach and remove.

SOLUTION: Slightly shorter Zumo power cable (about 2") and a right angle Powerlet plug.
During mock up I put some good size scratches on the handlebars moving the Powerbar on the handlebars.

NOTE - Use Electircal tape or duct tape inside the Powerbar handlebar area during mock up.
Luckily the Powerbar did hide the scratches. However if I ever take it off I'm gonna need a cup holder <sigh>

Just thoughts...

Let me know how you make out with your install.

Are you going to direct wire to the battery or the headlight/cigarette lighter method?

One version the Z stays on when you turn off the bike.
The second version turns off the Z when you turn off your bike. (within 30 secs)

When I do it (and I'm not certain I can yet, because of the Hydraulic Clutch issue  :() I'll go for the Cigar lighter method.

Hello,

I was reading about your install of the powerbar and it looks great.  I have a CVO 07 Ultra and want to do the same but had a few questions.

You ran the wiring/cables inside the handlebars right?  I replaced my bars w/ SS reach bars so they aren't stock.  Would I need to drill holes?  If so, did you drill them directly under the pwrbar or just adjacent?

You added a device to the bottom of the pwrbar and secured it w/ p clamps (a radio shack device)  Not certain what that's for, can you explain?

Thanks very much.

I changed my bars also.
The wires are inside my bars. A little more work but a nicer look.
Although, If you want, you can group them with your existing exposed wires under the bars.
My bars have a slot underneath at the top of the grip...the wires slid right in the slot.
I did not need to drill.

The added device is a gold double female adapter covered in shrink wrap and is held in place with the P clamps.
Radio Shack 274-886 Gold Plated female-female 1/8” coupler $11.00

The connecting cable (on left) in the pic above is easily and quickly removed from the coupler
Long wires from inside handlebars to one side
Short wires from Zumo to the other side

I covered the adapters in shrink wrap and to camouflage it all a little I painted the P clamps black.

I now have two 274-886 couplers under the Powerbar and two wires in the bars + power.
One for Audio (MP3 etc.)
One for MIC (works for bluetooth to regular stock HD/J&M headset)

This allows me to disconnect the two short wires AND using the Techmount quick change adapter
I can remove the Zumo and the entire Zumo bike mount in about 5 seconds.
(see pics below)

I can then lock it all up for safe keeping.
The Zumo bike cradle cost 80+ bucks!
Don't ask me how I know...(SIGH)

I'm using the BOMM for Bluetooth with my stock helmet headset...it works GREAT!

I know, it's kinda hard to see with the speaker grill in the picture background.
Look at the top pic. Can you see the right connected cables at the Powerbar?

The wires on left side of Zumo plug into the couplers on the bottom right hand side. (1st pic)

On the bottom pic...Can see the short cables missing on the Powerbar on the bottom right?

Hope this helps...
Ride Safe...Be Safe.

Actually I did it backwards from what you said...
I removed the bars and the left grip and ran the wire from the center of the bars out the end of the handlebar.

What was puzzling me was how you got the wires in past the clamp for the clutch/grip to the hole in the bars where the wires enter though. Did you have to make a little notch so they don't get crushed?

spydglide, yes, I ran the power and audio inside the bars.

The install or the phone call?

Kuryakyn makes a power outlet now too.  It runs from $53.00 to $70.00 depending on who has it listed on e bay.  Not as good looking as the one here but certainly usable.

Inside the handlebars back to the battery
I also ran the FM modulator audio output wire from inside the handlebars to FM modulator mounted on the side of the HD radio.

Thanks,
Steve

Don't do the FM modulator version.

Direct wire into the radio aux jack.
This is a much better quality install.

I did finally ask Powerlet about a quick disconnect for the 660.  Official answer from powerlet... no quick disconnect planned for the 660   :(

Quote
No we do not. The 660 was totally redesigned and the raw cables for us
to use are priced over $50 and as such, we opted to not support the
model. Very complex in the wiring and as such, not popular enough to
move forward with.

Thanks,

Someone set me straight (thanks!)... you can get the quick dsconnect from Techmount... but there is no wiring harness (that I'm aware of) for the 660 that isn't hard-wired.

BTW, if anyone needs the powerlet plug for the 550 cradle, I've got one I mistakenly ordered; I'll make you. A deal on it.
