I recently put in the Hog Tunes Big Ultra kit on my Ultra. With the 4 speakers it made a huge difference, esp with some Dynomat behind the fairing speakers. I also take off the Tour Pak and just have the front speakers.....still made a big difference...can still hear tunes on the highway! The Dynomat sure brought out the mid-range.

.....Just letting him know about my experience with a brand of speaker upgrade/amp on my Ultra.....as well, a few people that I have conversed with, and the two I have heard; the results are amazingly similar on a RG.

Installed Hawg wired amp and two speakers in place of stock speakers in fairing. Works well and has great sound and volume. Looking at the tweeters next or maybe the 6.25 speakers they are coming out with.  I'm happy.

The best speakers I have come across are made by J & M.  Take a look here:  Installing the New J&M 250w Amp. in a CVO Road Glide.

I have the Hawg Wired 150W amp with the speakers that are $250 (can't remember the model #)and with the speaker grills that incorporate the tweeters. I am very pleased, was riding along today at 73 mph and it was a little windy and I had the volume @ 50% and sound was very clear.
But maybe the best part is the thought these people put into the product, Hawg Wired that is. The wires are the correct length, the instructions are great, everything plugs together just amazing thought to detail. Took longer to R&I the RG Fairing than to install speakers/amp etc.
very pleased.

I recently changed my stock speakers out for the J&M "standard" upgrade speakers for the RG.  Not the larger ones that cost $270.  The ones I used have 3 cones with one being the same size as the stock speaker and then two little speakers mounted in the face plate.  Anyway, the improvement in sound quality was major.  And, they look way better.  The won't distort at very high volume either.  So, if you just want an easy relatively inexpensive improvement that's a good way to go.

I recently went with the J&M 7 1/4" Speakers, and could not be happier.  I had the Hawg Wired's in, and can say that I actually like the J&M's much better.  Honestly, the J&M's sound better than my Hawg Wired's with an amp, and for a ton less.  Before I put them in, I definitely thought that Hawg Wired was the best, not now.

Your stereo will sound better pending HOW MUCH $$$ you want

to invest!

Went to the 5 1/2" J & M 3 ways speakers. Big Improvement over

Stock. 6 months later, they come out w/ the new 7 1/2" J & M.

I got a really good deal on a set of these. Like others have posted,

These sound awesome and I am only running the stock HK unit!!!!!

Would an amp make these sound better? I am sure they will. But for

now, I am very happy w/ these just like they are.

That is the route I took with my SERG.  I really like the 7.25 J&M speakers with their amp.  Sounds really good, and will get very loud.  It is clear at 75mph.

I agree with the J & M set up.  Got the amp and speakers from dr.vtwin at a great price.  Don't know if they're still giving
the discount but the answer is just a phone call away.  Good luck

Ditto that.  I installed the J&M speakers and they are incredibly better, both volume and quality.  Plus, I actually get stereo sound in the middle of the bike now, instead of mono sound coming from two places with the OEM speakers.  I only changed the speakers, and it made enough of a difference that I don't need to make other mods.  And I think the J&M look is much sharper than OEM or Hawgwired or even the new Boom audio.  They sound better than Boom, at least standing still.  Can't compare to Boom on the road b/c I have not heard them on the road.

Here is what I did to my09SERG:

Sony CDX-GT630UI stereo
Sony XA120IP Ipod interface box wired inside fairing to glove box
Infinity 6"x 8" speakers w/ ride.loud.com adapters & grills
Biketronics 150 watt amp.

I made the initial purchase from:

http://www.cycleaccessorystore.com/default.asp

Then I upgraded to the Ride Loud adapters and the 6 x 8 infinity speakers.

www.rideloud.com

The stereo sounds great! It will hurt your ears if you crank it to long as advertised!  Good luck!

I don't believe they will work because the Hawg Wired amp is 4 OHM and the J&M speakers are 2 OHM. I already thought about getting the speakers and installing them with my amp but it won't work...

For what it's worth, I have the hogtunes amp (came with the bike) and swapped out the hogtune speakers for the J&M's- nice improvement, and they are compatible.

I don't believe they will work because the Hawg Wired amp is 4 OHM and the J&M speakers are 2 OHM. I already thought about getting the speakers and installing them with my amp but it won't work...

I forget the name of the place, Dr. V Twin I think, has both 2 & 4 ohm available. I think '06 and older HD's are 4 ohm. So just buy your J&M speakers to match the amp.

Also a 4 ohm amp will power 2 ohm speakers, but at higher levels the amp could overheat.

I had this issue for years on my home system. I have M&K front speakers and they are 4 ohm speakers and most AV receivers only drive 8 ohm speakers. My "newer" unit is a Yamaha 3800 and it's switchable to 4/6 ohms on the front outputs. This made a slight difference in sound quality, but my amp ran a lot cooler.

So my advice is J&M are the best for the money and if someone has amp that outputs at either 4 or 8 ohms, just get the correct rated speakers from J&M.

I just love my 7.25" J&M's on my '09 SERG without the amp. Lots clearer and tons louder without added distortion. Money well spent, my wife even commented as the BSR.

I currently have the HawgWired 150w amp and the 4ohm speakers on my 09SERG. Has anyone had this setup and changed to the J&M amp and the 7.25 speakers? looking for a comparison to see if its worth the money to consider.

Hi Mike  - IMO the answer here is no. The reason for larger sized speakers is to move more air to provide MORE sound in the lower Hz range ... bass range. Mid and high range tone (which is most of what we hear at speed) theoretically does not need larger spks.

Got great results form this combination.  Hush mat installed on the inner and outer fairing, 6.5" speaker adaptors from Full Throttle, Hawg Wired 150w amp, And Focal K2 speakers.

I just finished installing the Hawg Wired Four I Your Face system (300 watts and four speakers in the fairing). Its a huge improvement and probably more than enough, BUT... not quite where I want to be. This system comes with four Hawg Wired 5.5 inch speakers, may upgrade one pair to the 6.5 Focal. Im also thinking of changing the head unit and possible more speakers in the bags.

I've replaced the two stock speakers, added two to the inner fairing and adding two (and maybe a sub) in the bags. For the bags I'll definitely go 6 x 9. I heard the Infinity yesterday and I liked them. I still want to check out the Focal, Rockford Fosgate and Polk. Any suggestions, I'm looking mostly base for the rear.

I am in the process of upgrades to the stereo too, 09 SERG; Have the radio unit with Xm module and adding HW 4 in the face with speakers in the lower fairing. How do I go about having fade control between the upper fairing speakers and the lower fairing speakers? Do I some how pick up the rear RH/LH output plugs located in the fairing currently not being used?

It seams like my dealer added the Ultra overlay harness to my bike maybe when they installed the Xm. I have added the 5 new wires to the 35pin plug that goes in the back of the radio and that all seames to be straight foreward.

Hoping some can explain it to me in simple terms.

           Thanks

The rear speaker signal outputs are located in the 35 wire receptacle on the back of the radio.  The wire colors and pinouts are:

Rt. rear + = Green
Rt. rear - = Lt. green/brown
Lt. rear + = Brown
Lt. rear - = White/Brown

If you're working with the 35 wire Ultra connector inside the fairing the wiring assignments are 1,24,2, and 25, respectively--the numbered chambers are easier to find than the wire colors.

You can either splice the wires at the non-Ultra overlay harness (NUOH) 35 wire connector directly, remove the wires from the 35 wire connector and replace them with wires going directly to the speakers, or locate the wires in the NUOH's connectors used for the passenger controls left and right side, and use mating connectors and pins (you'd only be accessing the speaker wires, so two wires per connector) for a cleaner installation.

If the fader is not turned "on" the dealer can do it for your.Carl

You can verify the pinouts/wire colors in the HD Service Manual.

The pinouts are "live," so you'll get a signal, but if the fader isn't turned "on" already, the dealer will need to do it, or Iron Cross Audio can do it for you.  If your bass, treble, volume switch menu doesn't show "fader," it isn't turned on.

When I installed the fairing lower speakers on my bike, I removed the rear speaker wires from the 35 wire connector, installed new wires with the correct sockets to reassemble the connector and ran the wires to the amp, and then to the speakers.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

Harleypingman; Thanks,    I see the wires you are referring to in the 35 pin connector and in the holes you are referring to. They seem to route to a plug labled Rear Left and Rear Right. I think I would like to make the connection at these Rear Right and Rear Left plugs since they currently are not used. What are the other wires for in these rear speaker plugs (Rear Left- brown/white, red/white, grey/white, violet/black. Rear Right- red/black, violet/black, grey/white, red/white)?

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat... just not satisfied with the clarity and quality of the sound, stationary, or when riding. Based on all the positive reviews here, I thought it would be a good solution (especially for the price!!), and I think I initially thought it was pretty cool, but once the new wore off, I just don't think it sounds that great.  :nixweiss:

Which boat are you in Crusty, and what stereo upgrades have you done?

I just received the new head unit today, the Alpine idax 100m and will be installing this weekend. It's hard to know what the end result will be, seeing that the snow is about 5' high outside my door. I just hope I'll be happy once I get back on the road. :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock:

They're for the passenger controlled PTT and Mode select.  One of the reasons that having the HD Touring models service manual and the appropriate CVO supplement is that these and many other questions are easily answered by the wiring diagrams.  You seem interested in these types of issues so buying the manuals would probably provide excellent value to you.

I am in process of removing the Hawg Wired Direct Connect system from mine.  I am replacing the head unit with an Alpine IDA-X100m.  Adding 2 Wet Sounds Syn micro amps and polk 6.5's in the fairing and polk 6x9 in the bag lids.  Bought the bag lids and had them paint matched from yaffe.  Hope to have everything finished this weekend.  I hope mine turns out ok!

I need some advice for the next step in my stereo upgrade. i've got the fairing packed with 4 speakers, 300 watts of Hawg Wired amps and an Alpine iDax 100m head unit (going in this weekend). Now I'm adding 6X9" speakers in the bags with the JL Audio XD200/2 amp. Does anyone have a suggestion for a great 6x9" speaker. I've shopped around locally and but no one has anything I'm considering set up for me to hear. So I'll have to rely on your advice.

I  know I very little about ohms and have no idea the benefit or damage by running the "wrong" ohms. All along I've been under the impression that I should be running only 4 ohms speakers. I see that the Infinity speakers, both Kappa and Reference, are a 2 ohm speaker. Doesn't that have a negative effect on something (amp, speaker, head unit)?

the impedance is load that the amp sees. the lower the number the larger the load. 2 ohms is ok if the amp is capable of running at that. the larger the load the more power the amp will provide. However, lower impedance = more distortion and more heat. 4ohms would be better if the amp is in the saddlebag with little air circulation.  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm not a tech or audio guy, so this website has been helpful in doing various audio mods to my bike:

http://www.bcae1.com/

The homepage has a directory on the right side of the page that is organized by subject matter; scroll down to find what you're looking for.  For example, if you are considering wiring multiple pairs of speakers, try #58 on series and parallel wiring.

I did see and hear a pair or 6x9 that I liked but they are 2 ohm. Is that an issue I wonder

I run the Infinity's also with the titian amp! Love them! Crank them! Had no problem! Previously had the Titan 6.5" speakers and was disappointed! The Infinity's are heads and tails above those! My personal experience!

Was that the Infinity Kappa or Reference, 2 or 3 4way?
