Title: Christmas Lights
Post by: Boatman on December 02, 2008, 07:50:48 PM
Well it's that time of year for light putting up outside.  What's the deal with the miniature lights?

Only half the strand works?

All lights worked when you took them down last year but now either don't work or 1/2 a strand works?

How do they get so tangled up over summer storeage?

I check the fuses in the strand ends, check the bulbs, and they still don't work.

Do you just buy new lights each years?

Yes. Every stinkin year. The wife always runs around looking for replacements, checks them out, they fail, I go to the store and freeze my arse off hanging them.

Consider switching over to LED lights. They're virtually indestructible and I don't have to replace them every year.

Available lots of places & not expensive anymore. Here's some from Target:

So the wife gets a screamin deal on a commercial tree last year when Macy's is taking down the display trees.  I won't bore you with the details but a $1300 dollar tree ends up being $30.00 (lights half work).

So the last week she took all the old lights off (no easy chore) all were wire tied to the branches.

She hired a gal to come in and wrap it in new lights we got at COSTCO, GE 300 lights commercial grade at $20.00 a box.  She got 1200 lights and it did about half of a ten foot tree so back to COSTCO the next day and the tree now has 2250 lights on it and it cost $200.00 for the gal and $160.00 for the lights.

I hope it isn't a redo next year, that is one damned expensive $30.00 tree.

I switched to LED's a couple of years ago. They are more expensive but at least I don't have to replace them every year and the electricity expense for running the LED lights is much lower.

BAH HUM BUG   :confused5:

:D :D :D :D  That's what my wife says about me because I refuse to put up Christmas lights.

My roof is a 12/12 pitch.... it's steep and a long way up there.  If I fall off the roof I might not be able to pay for the house  :'(  And we live in the country - 400 ft back off the road... it's not like we have a lot of neighbors to impress.

Christmas lights are cool... I just don't want to spend a whole weekend and $$$ to put them up just to have to take them back down in three weeks.

And the whole Christmas Tree deal... my wife spent $$$$ to have a 10ft tall "nice tree".  I have actually re-named our formal living room the "Christmas Tree" room... we loose the use of whole room at Christmas time.  The tree goes up - takes the wife a full day to decorate... and then it comes back down in three weeks and I have to put all the boxes back up in the attic :(
I'm thinking that maybe we should just leave the tree up all year round.  We could take the Christmas decoration off after Christmas -- then put little red hearts on it for Valentine's Day -- Then green shamrocks on it for St. Patricks Day -- Hang Easter Eggs on it for Easter -- And maybe fireworks on it for Independence Day -- and... well you get the idea.  Why spend all that $$$$ and all the work for a short three week period :D :D

Makes sense to me.  Not sure I want to look at a tree in the dining room all year long though.  The wife does the tree decorating - I get the tree out of the attic with all the decorations.

I quit putting lights on outside of the house a few years ago.  Mostly due to laziness, but I did fall off the roof once - leaning over to attach lights & took a header.  Did a perfect flip - landed on my feet by some fluke of luck.  No injuries but after that I used the ladder more.  Then I just quit putting them up.

When the kids were little we would get a live tree or 2.  Always more fun for me - after Christmas. Some of them went to the lake for crappie habitat.  Some of them went to the burn pile for a few months.  Amazing how fast they go up in flames when they dry out.

Those little trigger like repair devices really do help to find where the problem is and fix it.  I was extremely sceptical until I tried it and they worth they're weight in gold.

As to the L.E.D.s, I'm in the process of switching my house over.  We've replaced all the tree lights, and the C9 bulbs outside.  Next year the Garland light will go and the year after that icicle lights.  The L.E.D.s will pay for themselves in a few years since my wife likes the house lit up enough that Tim the Toolman Taylor would go... Ar Ar Ar at it!

Great Thread!

daughter asked me on the way home yesterday (this is the girl you can't get to spend 15 min or longer on anything but watching TV).

"So, when are going to start decorating for Christmas?"  A real hand on the hips attitude.

THAT makes me want to slide off my icy roof while messing with strands so stiff from the cold that won't bend and doing it with fingers I can no longer feel anything with!

I told her I already did.  I put the bare tree up on Sunday.

All I can say is that it's a good thing you guys know a lot about motorcycles... because y'all don't know jack about Christmas lights. Being that the ex "inherited" all of the lights and most of the ornaments, it was time to buy new. Well I decided to take everyone's advice and go LED this year. Needless to say, it was not exactly what I expected. These things are bluer  than my HIDs! Linda is calling it our "Chanukah bush".  ;D :D ;D

The Chanukah Bush comment comes from my years of being married to a Jewish man that gave me a book called "There is No Such Thing as a Chanukah Bush." I have Jewish friends that put up a tree but my Ex never felt comfortable with having anything that represented Christmas including a wreath. I had converted to Judaism before our marriage and I think it is an intriguing religion but would have loved to have had a Chanukah Bush just from the festivity side of the month of December.

I'm on my way out of town for this entire week, get back in time to help Jamey get a surgery on his back and he will be laid up for the next 6 weeks and I did not even think about getting ornaments and tree down...
SO that pre-lit tree and a wreath on the door may be all we do this year too.
We will have to keep making trips to the garage to look at the bikes so we know what we are doing and why, but they still make us feel all warm inside, even after a few years and lots of bugs and dirt on em.

I even won the women's mileage contest again this year, not sure how since I hardly had a chance to go anywhere (or at least that is what it seemed like for me) so our bikes are not still new and glossy, but they still make us feel as good as the day we got em.

Bought 1200 lights yesterday so that I didn't have to screw with trying to get the old ones to work. Crap! only about 1/5th of 'em worked... and yes I plugged them in. Did I ever mention that I hate christmas!  Getting all the chit out of the attic with my sore knee's and hitting my bald head on the rafters not to mention all the frigg'n insulation making me itch for days. Then put it all up and then taking it all down and back to the attic. Did I mention I hate Christmas! Maybe I did. I'm not going to mention that we have a very expensive fake tree that looks great! BUT no we had to drive up in the wood over 5,000 feet to get a frigg'n fresh Noble. (And to top it off, I miss a great football game.) Now the truck is all scratched up and I'll spend a week getting that cleaned up. By the way, did I mention I hate christmas!

A great holiday season will be upon us with Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and Festivus in the same week.

I have maintained my "Head of Household" status for many a Festivus as no one can wrestle me down a pin me as lore dictates.

Also no one dare air any grievances, all are to be happy, like it or not.

I have!

One year when we assumed the keg was empty, but when a late arrival was able to draw and drink the 3 required beers before joining in Festivus activities, when realized what had happened, joy overtook us all and no grievances were aired.

As I recal the Feat of Strength happened to be Jagger shots that year, no big whoop.

I'm a gonna roll the Jester in the living room.....NA..I'll ride it in...Hang xmas lights all over her, and put xmas presents all around her.

I like Hogbreath's idea.  Maybe I'll put a hat on the Frosty!

Hey Cousin!  Where you been?

I guess that kinda explains the extra bikes in the garage!

Cheers!

Don't forget to do your part for the planet and go green with solar LED Christmas lights http://mysolarshop.com/holiday.html

These are a great idea. Never knew they existed till a couple of weeks ago.  Watch out, next year I'm lighting up the driveway (1/2 mile long) and anything else thats gets in the way.

We only get 8 hours of daylight which is normally obscured by clouds this time of year.  Doubt they'd work.  If they were inside, they could be charged with incandescent lights shining on them which defeats the purpose.  Can't win sometimes.

You could send them to me, I'll put them put after cutting the grass, take a picture of them and send it back to you to put on your fridge.

That's it!  Next year, I'm only hanging PICTURES if lights.  They'll always work!  :cucumber: :2vrolijk_21:
