Dad's down - Stage IV Lymphoma - could use a hand
« on: September 03, 2008, 08:23:46 PM »

Hello everyone.  I can't write to all of you as friends because I've not been fortunate to meet everyone who will read this.  I need to ask a favor though.  The CVO Community is special enough that i know you'll at least consider the request.  Thanks beforehand for taking the time to do so.

My father is very ill with Stage IV Cancer.  He's fought a battle of this sort previously, but not to this magnitude.  Not long ago we were afraid he'd not come through it this time.  We still don't know he will.  But he's fighting hard again.

We've had to move him from his home here in Syracuse to Houston for life saving treatment.  The treatments have been long and difficult and expensive.  Our family has helped where we can.  But now the expenses are almost as frightening to him as is the disease.

No one is asking for help with large medical expenses.  That's too much.  Do not give until it hurts.  But, if you can, enough to help just a little would be a Godsend.

The cost of a dinner out or what you'd spend taking the family to a movie.  Something like that.  It would mean more to my dad than you can know right now.

More history and a donation link can be found here:

http://web.me.com/srhaberer/My_Journey/Donations.html

Thank you, everyone.  Very much.

Howie and Raquel, the brief mentions that had come of your dad had I'm sure left many of us wondering how he was doing.  So glad to read he's gotten as far as he has but still startled by the frightening road yet ahead of him.

Can't even begin to imagine what it might be like for him and for all the family supporting him.  You guys deserve credit too.  Though of course the focus has to be on him right now.

A little help is no doubt far more difficult to ask for than it is to give.  Congrats to both of you for stepping up to ask in a way that couldn't have been easy.  Tell your dad a group of crazy Harley riders are saying hi and keeping him in their thoughts.  Will send the Old Man a little meal money after bit.  Not a biggie.

Just finished reading and in some cases re-reading the links at your dad's little informational site.  Quite a road he's taken.

Once again just no words to share sympathy for what all of you are going through.  Thanks again for the opportunity to feel selfishly good about doing just a little to help someone that really needs it.

Don put it very well in that it is harder to ask than to give. I'm happy to give, especially after I saw one of his favorite songs is Duke Of Earl. He is in my generation. God Bless all of you and I wish y'all the best on this journey.

Absolutely! Thoughts and prayers and lots of love and positive vibes heading from The Red Roof Inn in Kentucky!! You always have a place to stay if you need to make the drive again! Here's hoping that your dad becomes one of our CVO family miracles and makes his way here for some ribs and redneck hospitality!!

Keep a smile on your face and faith in your heart!

Thanks to everyone. Received a phone call from my Mother (from Houston). She was perplexed as to who all the folks were that were helping her out. My brother who runs the website told her of the recent traffic on Dad's donation page. Gave a brief explanation and I have to share with you guys that she was audibly shaking with disbelief. I haven't the words to tell you how much your help means to my parents. All I can say is Thank You Very Very Much!!! From the heart.

You and Your Family will be in our thoughts and prayers.  My mother had breast cancer and she beat it.  Here is a picture of the ladies (my wife, mother and twin girls) in my life walking this year in the 2008 Relay for Life.  Please show this to your Father and let him know that are ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT CARE and THAT HE IS NOT ALONE!

It would be an honor to join my fellow members in helping out a friend.

Love, Prayers and Support for you and your family.  Tracy

Thanks again to everyone. Roger is right about the people here on this site. Dad was moved to ICU this morning.

He's really fighting  now. He can't speak as of yesterday but I spoke to him and shared all the thoughts and prayers

coming from my friends here. It gives hope to him.

Neal you have certainly created something here that has morphed into something extraordinary.

Thank you everyone.

Howie, I've been wondering how your Dad is doing.  Thanks for the update.  I didn't expect to be shedding a tear tonight when I checked in.  Don said it best about being easier to offer than ask.  I'm glad to help a brother from another mother.  God Bless you and your family.

Thanks Bill & Jim. He really needs these prayers now. I hope they are heard. They have had to sedate him heavily but when he is coherent i can't wait to share all these prayers with him.

Thanks again,

I've just received this pic of my father in icu. I wanted to post this to let everyone know who has sent well wishes that they are being graciously received. Dad was very surprised to hear of all the prayers being sent. If pictures are worth a thousand words this one may be worth a million. What a fighter!! Thanks to all!!!!

Hey GH

As Twolane has said, it's much harder to ask than to give. Each & every one of us needs help of some kind or another at verious times of our lives. Makes me feel good that I can be a small part of the help. Your Father, You & the rest of your family will be in my thoughts & prayers. God be with all of you.       Linny

Thanks for the pic Howie.  How did MD Anderson weather the weather in Houston?
MD Anderson did very well with the hurricane. They are well prepared as you might imagine. Structurally, they use things like flood gates for protection. Of course once they are lowered I am told no one in or out until the party's over. Backup generators worked well. Skeleton crew did a great job of seamless care from what I'm told.  :2vrolijk_21:

As a side note the remnants of Ike knocked out power here. Just over 41,000 still without power in this county.  :nixweiss:

GH - Just want to let you know your Dad is in my thoughts & prayers.  No better facility than M.D. Anderson - several friends went there with a poor prognosis that are alive & well today in spite of predictions to the contrary.  Glad to hear they were well prepared for the storm.  Hoping for all the best for you & your family.

Very much.

Howie & Raquel
Howie,
Our prayers are with your Dad and all the family.
It's hard on everyone when we come face to face with these challenges.
Prayers and funds are en route for a little help.

God bless,
Ron

A quick note to all my friends for their help and prayers. We honestly cannot explain how much it has helped.

It is with a very heavy heart that we must share that our Dad passed September 23, 2008. We've never witnessed
a more valiant fighter and there is a large hole here today.

We would like all to know that Dad expressed almost disbelief when told of your prayers. Prayers from those he
never met.

We can't thank everyone enough.

Sorry to read this Howie.  Terribly sorry.  That it couldn't have been completely unexpected makes it no less painful and heartbreaking.  Keep those you love close.  Hope you found a way to give him a rousing send-off.

Thoughts are with you man.  Be well and take the moments you need for yourself as well.

Howie, I'm terribly sorry about the news.  I was hoping for a turn around.  I know he's been suffering for a long time and to have to go through what he did so far from home makes it harder on all.  He's certainly in a better place now and we can all be thankful for that.  It's time to celebrate a life instead of mourning a loss.

I'm so incredibly sorry for you loss, words can not express. Love to you and your family and continued thoughts and prayers through the trials of missing him in your lives. Remember him with smiles and continue the strength he showed in celebration of a wonderful husband/father/grandfather.

Take care of your mom and yourselves! Be happy he's no longer suffering. Know that we share your pain and will help keep him alive in our hearts, as well.

Howie,
My sincere condolences to you, Rocky and your entire family.  I read something the other day that said a birth certificate shows your birth, a death certificate shows your death, but the photo albums shows all the memories in between.  It sounds like your father lived a long, happy life and you have lots of memories to cherish.  My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family as you take this part of your journey.

Howie,
My condolences on the loss of your Dad. He's at peace now and no longer suffering the pain and awful treatments associated with the big "C". He's in a better place.....but his memories will be with you always. I lost mine 4 years ago and there's not a day goes by that I don't miss him.

Came down to the end of this thread only now and I have as such to apologise for my ignorance on previous post - sorry to hear that your father passed on after a hard and fierceful battle.
All the same - he was a man surrounded by a caring family and had as I read it in the blog - a rich and colorful life which I hope is giving you a source of spiritual consolotion at these difficult times.

My delayed prayers and thoughts ae with you and the family.
