Klock Werks 12" "Flare" Windshield
« on: March 21, 2008, 01:45:01 AM »

Just screwed this on.  Ordered it right after getting the bike then later saw someone's mention that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.  After seeing it out of the package for the first time this evening I'm a little concerned also.

It had a 9" screen on it.  Too short and wind was right in the face and turbulent.  Really uncomfortable.

This is a 12" screen (by the mftr's measure).  It is longer from bottom to top.  But it is swept back so much it's not a full three inches taller though it is longer from its bottom to its top.

It's a little higher also.  Between 1 1/2" and 2".  I really like the look.  Am just afraid it's not going to do that much more than the original screen to keep the wind out of the rider's face.  Hopefully the shape will play some role in helping there also.  With just a bit of luck will get the opportunity to find out for sure how it handles wind tomorrow early evening.

Here's something to attempt to illustrate the difference in height relative to the rider:

Someone (forget who, sorry) asked about this after I'd mentioned it was on the way a few days ago.  Yeah, I think it looks cool too.  Wait to spend your money until I get a chance to ride it tomorrow night or this weekend though.  Make sure it's not still too windy in your face.  No sense in two of us potentially wasting the $$.

The EZ pull clutch parts that were supposed to be here a week ago are going to be here today. I know this because the seller swears to it and tells me so and promises.  So of course they will.

If they are I'll button it back up and take it for a spin tonight.  If they aren't I'm tired of waiting.  Will probably button it back up anyway and just forget it.  So might still take it for a spin late this afternoon or this evening.

So far, I'm not all that crazy about my Clearview.  2 inches higher and with the recurve and I still have helmet buffeting, maybe even worse than before. :nixweiss:  Also, I swear I have a draft going down my back that was not there before.  I'll put a few more miles on it, but may go back to the 12" H-D. :o

Over a 100 you need to duck your head down!!

So that little dinky bump on the nacelle of my RK Custom isn't doing me any good?  :o

...and  :nixweiss:

Ok, here goes.

It doesn't suck.  But it's got its quirks.

Rode it for an hour this afternoon.  When first started I thought I was getting blown all over the place; until I realized I wasn't.  The noise was fooling me.

After a moment realized my head wasn't getting blown around too bad and started moving my hand around.  No greater wind impact with my hand in front of my chest than until it raised to just above my head.  So at least for height it is pushing the wind up over you.

But it's noisy.  It's the shape of the thing.

Those folds on the side drop the windstream as it goes through them.  Right at your face/head the wind is kicked up over you.  Right beside your head those folds in the windshield let a tunnel of air fly just outboard of your ears.  With the half helmet that was on this evening it made for a noisy environment.  With the full face lid I'm guessing the experience would have been different.  But will have to find that out for sure another time.

It doesn't have the wind-in-the-face problem I feared it might.  The noisy rider's environment it creates I'd not expected beforehand.  That's a real issue though.  Wouldn't be surprises if later version of this screen keep that central shape but have it flare back outward a bit on its trailing edge to direct the airflow wider around the rider's head.

The screen looks good.  It gets a resounding endorsement for appearance.  Riding with it, however, is ok but definitely not great.  At least not in a half helmet.
