Products that over deliver
« on: November 27, 2008, 04:21:59 PM »

Killing a little time this Thanksgiving before I go out and grill the Thanksgiving cow.

I was standing in the kitchen eating some cereal out of the box and realized how delicious this stuff is - Post Selects Blueberry Morning (I know, I know - beat me with a feather). I got to thinking about what an esoteric group this forum represents. Generally, people willing to pay more for quality and even a bit more for appearance.

I thought I would poll this august group to find out what products you have personally purchased and used that you feel are nearly worth their weight in gold. Could be anything. I would start with the iPod and my iMac (after spending 25 years in the WinTel camp, I finally saw the light). These things are genuinely fun to use, very reliable and look great.

I would add OpusX cigars, Mazda Miatas (a ton of reliable fun for very little money), St. Croix sweaters (a long time favorite that makes me look forward to winter), my Ariens snowblower (soon to see heavy rotation), Uni-ball Micro pens (cheap, crisp and accurate) Wustoff knives (worth every penny), my Blackberry (or crackberry as my wife calls it) and JVC D-ILA projectors (stunning picture for the price).

Would be interested to see what you all throw in the mix. You could turn us on to a unique Christmas gift or a useful tool. Could be something you use on your bike or something that makes your life better or just brings a smile to your face every time you see or use it.

Baskin Robins chocolate almond, See's Chocolate candy, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, heated seats, Jack Daniels and a wife that doesn't bitch 24/7. (Of course I have no first hand knowledge of such but I've heard such a thing does exist.)

Firechief2 - I'm with ya on the sony camera's (still and video) and I have a Viao but the Mac has replaced that, so much fun to use! I also believe in Sony receivers and mini-speakers.

kb - I'll check out the LL Bean boots. Been loooking for a pair to keep my feet dry!

Keep 'em comin' guys, Christmas isn't far off and I want a good list to give my wife!

Most everything LL Bean makes overdelivers. If it doesn't they'll give you a replacement or your money back no questions asked even a year or two later. And their chamois shirts are heaven.

The quality motorcycles Harley produces. They never break, the chrome does not rust, chip, crack, peel off and last forever, parts are cheap, service that you can always rely on at HD dealerships, The great customer/customer service relationship from HD, the subperb quality of the 105th flag that was in the package bought from HD for a very fair price.

I am watching A&E on Philidelphia Parking Authority. I have learned two things from watching it:

1) If I ever go to there, I will drive straight through and not park my vehicle.
2) My theories about people in that city have been confirmed.

DEWD!  That stuff will screw up a septic system quick, fast and in a hurry..........there ain't nothing that can be done after that fact except pumping the tank and finding a new area on your property that perks well enough to use as a leech field.  It will not breakdown.

Don't ask me how I know.

My Scott 6'10" 3 piece fly rod with my Hardy reel attached...poetry in motion...preferably on Snowbird Creek in N.C.
My Nikon F5 or D200 mounted on my Gitzo Carbon Fiber, with Swiss Arca Ball Head...a nice photo in my eye, with the light just right for only 2 minutes...
Any really good piece of Nikon glass...my favorite is an old AIS 50-135...in the right place, at the right time, nothing can capture things quite the same.
A nice bike between my legs...brand doesn't really matter...so long as everything is working like it should...synchronicity.
My Trailwise Goose Down Sleeping bag.
Sierra Designs Tents.
Svea backpacking stove....solid brass...35 years old and still works perfectly.
Winston 9' 7wt 5 piece rod with Ross Gunnison 7/8 Reel...perfect for big bass or light salt.
Corbin Seats.

Ohlin components

zackly what I was thinking.  Man must have sewer not septic.

My short list has a 22.5" Weber kettle grill on it.  The accessories available for this offer an unmatched versatility.  I don't know how I ever grilled without it.  It's never spent a night inside and still looks (nearly) new after 4 years.

zackly what I was thinking.  Man must have sewer not septic. My short list has a 22.5" Weber kettle grill on it.  The accessories available for this offer an unmatched versatility.  I don't know how I ever grilled without it.  It's never spent a night inside and still looks (nearly) new after 4 years.

You betcha!  And for what my sewer bill runs every month; I'm gonna try and fill it up every time  ;D

Lower Alabama, I used to be from Alabama, but then Wallace got shot and I had to move.

Taste Key Lime pie and you'll erase that list.

Well....  You might keep Dutch Apple.

I'm back and forth all the time. Parents and rest of family are in Mobile. If I come back to live it'll be in the sticks. I might even get a double wide to put in front of the house to keep up with appearances. I'll use it for a garage and keep the goats and chickens and bears on the other side.

A yellow lab
A job that i enjoy and pays well (knock on wood)
My health
My religion
A Guinness beer

If you find the 04, buy a case, I'll take some.  Newer Caymus can benefit from some rest before swillment.
The reserve is a little too pricey but good too.  The George Duboeuf beaujolais nouveau is a tasty one this year too.

Drink well, life is too short as it is.

Just got an 09 Fusion last month.  What a surprise!  I can't get it to lose traction in the snow so far.  The headrest took some getting used to.  It's a Co. car and I was only able to pick the color but I LOVE it so far!  :2vrolijk_21:

Klar Ullfrotte smart wool under garments, the softest, warmest, undergarments ever made and I have tried them all.  I layer the 200 then the 400 in the tops and bottoms over a thin silk top and bottom and I'm good to go.  Fits well, not bulky and another benefit is that they do not retain body odor very easily but I'll bet their are a few guys that would give it a good run for it's money.  It is what the Scandinavian fisherman wear when they are out to sea.

Walter Dywer leather products from Framingham Ma. The only Leather Company that I know of that is still made in the good old USA. My wife and I have purchased our jackets, vest and chaps through them, soft and well fitting leather. It just feels like it was custom made just for me. I have had a number of people ask us where we purchased our leather gear. It feels like good leather used to feel before it was made overseas. They will alter and adjust whatever you need to make sure it fits the way you need it, it's not one size fits all.

Another site with a bit more current info. Don't own any of this stuff (yet) but living in Minnesota gives one many opportunities to wear this type of garment outside of the motorcycle riding experience so I could easily cost-justify the purchase!

Well if you want to talk cars, dollar for dollar the best value in a sportscar is the Mitusbishi Eclipse GT-6 Syder Convertible with the Aero pkg, Rockford Fosgate Sound System and leather interior. Not just because I have one, but the vehicle compares with anything out there up to $80k and fully loaded, you can drive away in one for around $35k with 0% financing. It's a rocket sled on wheels that sticks to the road like glue, is comfortable even for a really big person like me, the top is quiet, the sound system is killer , everything works to perfection, maintenance is nill (this is the 2nd one I've owned) and they are too cool for school looks wise.

Hoist not surprised to hear that the leather jacket has survived, quality stuff.  I see the guys from Dyer when they set up at the swap meet out here in the early spring.  They usually have 2 booths during bike week at Laconia.  I like to rattle old Georgie now and then as he is quite a character.  I believe it is a third generation family business and from what I'm told it doesn't appear that there will be a fourth generation. The work is too hard and the younger guys have different plans. I hate seeing businesses go overseas.  I know it is just a matter of time but when do we say enough is enough. I grew up near the New Hampshire millyard that stretched from Manchester and on to many mills in Massachusetts. I can still remember the large pipes from the tanneries dumping the dyed waste water right into the Merrimack. You never knew the color coming out from one week to the other. Glad to see clean water though. (www.walterdyer.com) 1-866-879-4654

The Redrock ice fishing supply site that Buy Early posted has the best prices I'm aware of. I'm serious about the ability of this stuff not getting any body odor. I've used mine all year and only hang it out to air out occasionally, and I don't sleep alone! The partial zip turtle neck in the 400 weight is the one I use the most, it has the thumb holes and wears well. My wife freezes just looking out the window and this combination has been the best yet. I just purchased the HD/Gerbing heated top and bottom so I can go real light on the clothing and still stay warm. I would stay away from the King of the Mountain Wool clothing.  Over priced and you can put the product right up to your mouth and breathe easily right through it, that tells me that it ain't worth a crap when it's windy out or in our case riding.  Wool needs to be woven tightly like some of the LL Bean stuff.

Another quality product that worked well for me was a set of riding shorts from LD Comfort. (www.ldcomfort.com) 1-888-642-7091. The shorts don't have any seams which make them very comfortable for long trips. It will reduce the chances of getting a sweaty & uncomfortable crotch when you are on a long trip. Most of the clothing made for serious bicyclicsts will work well for our application.

I should have included Swannie Wool clothing in the group. I purchased a set about 20 years ago and recently purchased some used on E-Bay. It came in a light brown military camo, a blue and black plaid and a red a black plaid. Every now and then I see a piece on e-bay. The parka is the warmest garment I own. It was made for some European military and the stuff was practically waterproof due to it's very tight weave and the type of wool used.  I don't know one sheep from another, honest, but the ones used were a special high altitude breed, plus it was virgin wool. If sheep are caught cheating and fooling around, is it still virgin wool? That must mean that regular wool is from the slutty sheep, now I know why there are so many sex and sheep jokes and stories. You could ruin a whole virgin wool company just by slipping in a male and wreck havoc on the herd!

Who makes that?

I had the honor of receiving a bottle of 21 year old "The Glenlivet" from my shop upon my retirement, and was fortunate to share a nip of 33 year old "The Glenlivet" with my Dad a few years ago.

Never heard of a 25.

Personally drink Lagavulin or Dalwhinnie except for special occasions

($400.00 - $800.00 bottles of Scotch cannot be a regular habit)

Henry,
I have to look at it from the angle of what a top shelf drink would cost at a Bar. $20.00 - $30.00 a drink
so here you have a bottle that holds 12 to 16 drinks and cannot be had hardly at any bar.
Cheaper than motorcycles!
I have a CVO, everything else becomes easier to rationalize.

You guys....and the repartee I can dependably find on the CVO site.  Whenever I need a good chuckle, all I have to do is log on, and WAA-LAAA! You always deliver!

Mike, my life companion who is very special, and not for sale or reproduction.
My cat Maggie, who always makes me smile.
My dog Beau, who is my constant companion.
My FXR.  My Tour Master jacket which keeps me cozy on cold days on the road.
My job, which has made many things possible.
My SCUBA computer, which has given me lots more bottom time.
My K2 skiis, which have gotten me down the hill faster than I should have gone.

I agree with Firechief. Garmin always over delivers on quality, performance and service!

I've got to say it once again, Garmin RULES!
I was having a problem with one of my GPSMAP 478 acquiring satellites.  I called and they said to sent it in and gave me a RMA #. Well, I just got it back today (sent in the day before Thanksgiving). The unit was replaced with a refurbished one. No big deal, right. I figured it would have newer software, which it did (NT 2009 A). What I didn't expect is that they transferred all of my waypoints and routes to the new unit! This is taking customer service to the "next" level. These guys "get it". I may have to buy some stock as this company is going places.

I still have a menu from a nice little place in Vancouver that listed its top Scotch at $500 a half ounce, 900 for a full ounce. I asked how much for a look at the bottle. That is when it hit me, take the menu with ya!  :pumpkin:

Jägermeister - talk about over delivery.

Dr. McGillicuddy's - http://www.drmcgillicuddy.com/cabinet/cherry.html  I don't know if any of you have ever tried this stuff, but if you like maraschino cherries, this stuff is the best.  It's very easy to get to the point of over delivery.

Reviewed this thread for new purchases and thought I would bump it and add a few recent products that over deliver:

My iPad, it rarely leaves my side. GPS, tunes, movies, the web, astronomy apps, social networking apps (including cvoharley and FB), USA Today, weekly podcasts (varying from Garison Keillor to Erwin McManus), photos, alarm clock, bird identifier, streaming Netflix, calendar, instant weather and radar (this one has saved me a soaking once or twice), Google Maps, Dragon Dictate, ebay, Pandora, home theater remote, the Bible, Scrabble board, e-books, Marvel comics, Wired Magazine, Zillow and about one cool new app a week I can't resist, plus the ultimate feature, instant on, instant off - no booting up for 5 minutes! This thing has been a riot to use and I keep figuring out new ways to use it. Considering mounting it on my handlebars. I have the no questions asked return policy from Best Buy and there aren't many moving parts in the thing. Have carted it around in my saddlebags for a few hundred miles and it will make the trip to Sturgis with the group so more fun to come.

Another cool product, Sony DR-BT21G bluetooth Stereo headphones. Wearing them now and they are a good addition to the iPad.

Let's hear about some of the stuff you are using that you would recommend to others on this forum.

I still can't believe anyone reads USA Today.

I will add to the list a little flashlight I recently purchased. Small enough to pocket carry almost everyday and stows nicely in the TP. 4 Sevens Quark 123 Tactical, R5 Edition. Search for a 10% discount and this was well worth the money.

I posted this else where but thought this was a more appropriate place to ask. I'm in need of a new leather briefcase. I've been eying up the Louis Vuitton laguito but really didn't want to drop the $1730 on it. Any other recommendations? Y'all have to have something nice that you love & looks good. Espically in this crowd.

Walmart has one for $8 and you can send me the other $1722 for me to spend on my bike.  Just a thought...
Seriously, that's a ridiculous price to pay for a leather briefcase.  I'll be curious to see if anyone else here disagrees with me.  I think $300 to $400 is too much to pay for a nice one, but worth it if you really like it.  $1700+ not on your life!

if it has to be leather, go for Seeger. Expensive, but the best. I still carry briefcases I bought in the 80's from them. From early 90's till last year their products were sold under "Montblanc Leather" as they were owned by Compagnie Financière Richemont. Since last year they are independent again and under the old label "seeger" back on the market.

Matter of fact in trouble presently as Montblanc - they still produce for them - doesn't pay their bills ...

Thanks Kraut. That's much more what I'm looking for. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a Seeger retailer here in the US (or anywhere else for that matter). I may resort to buying the Montblanc labeled form a local store.
