How Did We Miss This? Chrome rear tail light extension
« on: April 19, 2007, 12:06:27 PM »

So one week after I get my Street Glide light installed this new item is available from the MoCo.  Just great.

Sure would have been simpler to go this way.  Not sure I would do chrome but I sure as heck would have thought about it OCD and all.

Tri-Bar Lighted Rear Fender Extension Kit

Add a "tail-dragger" look to the rear fender. The Tri-Bar Rear Fender Extension wraps the trailing edge of the fender in chrome, and the integrated Tri-Bar LED light bands add a practical touch. The three smoked light bands glow red in the running mode, and increase in intensity when the brakes are applied. The complete kit includes the chrome-plated ABS housing, fast-acting LED lamp assembly, and all necessary installation hardware.

91067-07 Fits '99-later FLHR, FLHT, FLHTC, and FLHTCU models.

MSRP US $179.95

Too funny.  I've still got my parts here waiting to get them painted to match the red.  So not as far along as you.  Might eBay the whole mess and consider this; except I think I like the look the whole thing painted to match.

Will have to think about it a little bit.....

Hmmmmmmm?

Don, I think  agree, but this appears to be a simple install and it would have been worth looking at, that's for sure.

Is it possible that it's too much chrome?  (don't tell d00d I asked that)

I'm just not sure yet.  Think I'll print out the picture.  Sit on the floor behind the bike with a beer; and think about it for awhile.

Actually glad they're offering options that are more than just new wild-hair painted parts.  I did, however, cringe a bit when I saw this one.  Having just bought the "old" light I said a bad word (actually a compound bad word) upon seeing it:

Street Glide™ Tri-Bar Light Upgrade - Auxiliary Running Light / Brake Light

Upgrade the FLHX Street Glide™ model's Original Equipment Tri-Bar fender light from a single-mode running light to a dual-mode running and brake light. The three smoked light bands glow red in the running mode, and increase in intensity when the brakes are applied.

Well it must have been the one I just uttered when I saw your post.  I didn't even read the detail in the chrome one about the M F'n run/brake modes.  Damn

Yeap, the new chrome piece includes the dual function light that is now available separately for the FLHX light housing.  So there is some benefit to be rationalized there (above and beyond chrome by itself).

Haven't really thought about the back of the bike yet.  My first reaction, however, is the flowing one piece part is going to look better and perhaps be a bit less obtrusive than the chrome piece just hung in the center.  Especially since we've already got paint to match filler strips the chrome piece would be juxtaposed against.

Guess the rear light function adding a brake function isn't all that big a deal down that low either.  Hell, we're lucky to get folks behind to see the lights up in the line of sight.  But, still.......    :huepfenlol2:

My first reaction is ooh-aah! Since I too bought the painted version may have to take a step back and reconsider. I am still working on saddlebag fillers to go with look of extended bags. The chrome is sweet looking, but the paint version has filler covers with it ( although the fillers aren't exactly the look I want they are close). One thing for sure if they is something different or new someone on this site will find it!  :2vrolijk_21: John

I was thinking with the bling extension on the exhaust and the chrome in the middle on the extension the look might carry off ok.

Really mute now though since I already have the monochromatic thing going on and I do like it.  Guess I just spent another $90.00 for the dual function though, I just can't get away from having more light and brake awareness for the cages.

Have to catch the third wire someplace too.  All three exist on the red bike going to saddlebag spoilers and lighted latches.  So I've got them there by the struts anyway (without having to go all the forward to the accy connector or behind the batter).  What about using one of those light amplitude modules?  Oh, it's an LED, never mind....

I like that too.  Actually like the overall line better than the new Harley piece described here.  Were it not for already having their similar licence plate ass'y mounted up higher (and really liking it) I'd have done this before.  It's a nice looking piece.

But like the other license plate stuff.  And actually do like the FLHX thing.  Even though the filler stips overall shape I think needs to be tweaked a little.  But with painted to match and maybe the addition of a stripe or two to blend it in better I think it'll look ok.

Never will be able to get a SERG if it comes available at this pace.    :)

The Kuryakyn might be better suited for the SEEG's and the MOCO for the SEUltra's..

With the SEEG we've kind of already got a SEHX/SEEG anyway.  The one piece thing I think will be the best looking overall option.  Even if it is stuck on.

That works but IMO clutters the back of the bike, hence why I'm looking to move the plate under the fender like a mud flap. This will open up some of the painted area.

Shame, shame, shame on you!!!! :o

Not sure if I like this or not. Will have to defer comment until I see it installed. I wasn't really sold on the FLHX version because of the filler strips, but would be nice to see this application and a FLHX side by side. Only drawback I see on this is you will either cover/discard the cloisonne that I already have on my fender. :nixweiss:

Rog, you wrote earlier here that your FLXH rear housing/light was already installed.  Not having gotten it painted yet I've never even held mine up against the bike.  Have wondered, however, just what of the existing hardware has to come off to make room for its install.

If it's convenient sometime would you shoot a pic or pics that show it from the inside (with the saddlebags off) to show what mounts where and what parts work with what parts?   I'll find out eventually.  But I'm lazy enough to ask rather drag my stuff out and hold it upside down, right side up and sideways trying to sort it all out before it's disassembled.

I'll try to check it out tomorrow.  Since Ihad it at the shop for the list of crap I was doing and the regulator recall they went ahead and slapped it on with the 3M tape method.  If it isn't buried behind too many bikes I'll get some pics, if it is buried I should have it back next Tuesday or so and get some then.

Check the original thread pics I think it may answer the question. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=11605.0

Oh, I also ordered the light with the run/brake function.  They are currently in stock at the MoCo so I figured I'd just get it over with and do it now.

68229-07

Fits '06-later FLHX models.

MSRP US $89.95

2Lane,
It took me less than an hour to mount this Hawg.  You will be very surprised
at how easy it is.  I recommended the 3M tape method to Rog and I have gone
about 2500 miles since my install and no problems at all.  One trip was 720 miles
from Key West to SC and it rained and was sunny and the tape is holding like
day one!  You will really like the look of it on your bike!
Have Fun,

Thanks for the thread Tim, it does look great to me.  Also, the unit has a snap fit to the bottom of the fender that should assist with it staying without issue.

2Lane,
It took me less than an hour to mount this Hawg.
Have Fun,
TimBone

Thanks Tim.  I'm not worried about the tape at all.  That stuff holds emblems on for years in any position on a vehicle.  Holding this piece, that will also have benefit of a bolt or three top and bottom, in it's relatively shielded position behind the saddlebags isn't a bit of a worry.

How much comes off to make room for it though?  Lose what parts?

Thanks,
Don

Don, I have the impression nothing had to come off.  It sits right on top of what's there with the tape I thought.

That will make it easy.  Just from quickly eyeballing it I couldn't tell if we had to lose that bracket immediately below the strut or it if just laid on top.  I was hoping/assuming it just laid on top.  Guess the loop for the rear detachable point will have to come and then get reinstalled back through the hole.  But a BFH and a torch will handle that quite nicely.

I am thinking of using some small flush mounted lamps from the street rod shop though.  Mounting them in the side cover part of this thing about a 1/3rd of the way up.  Set them up for a blinker/brake/tail function.  Would't be that much more effort while all the crap is out of the way and the wiring is accessible.

Don,
The only thing I removed were the 2 red filler strips that were between each saddlebag.
I could have easily left them, but it looked very much out of place behind the black
on the new piece, so off they came.  On the FLHX bikes this piece is bolted to the
fender and TimBone wasn't about to do any drilling in the fender.  3M all the way!!
I will try and take a few pics this weekend with the bags off and post them up.
Me and Abby are headed to Augusta, Ga tomorrow for a day trip and visit the Dealer
since we have never been there before.
Have Fun,
Tim

Thanks Tim.  I was hoping this would be one of those everything-stays-in-place-just-stick-it-on kind of jobs.  And it looked like it might.  I'd just been too lazy to look at it that closely until after I got the part painted.

Thanks again,
Don

Does anyone know if this works with the Bushtec Vertical Receiver trailer hitch?

Too funny.  I've still got my parts here waiting to get them painted to match the red.  So not as far along as you.  Might eBay the whole mess and consider this; except I think I like the look the whole thing painted to match.

Will have to think about it a little bit.....

Hmmmmmmm?

im thinkin the red would be the deal.....    although the kuryakyn would be a creative SUBTOTBF solution

Scot, I'm actually more and more ambivalent about the whole thing as time passes.  I like the look of the FLHX rear extension and it's light.  I really don't care for that new chrome stub Harley just released.  But neither the Harley nor the Kuryakyn stuff really really give me warm fuzzies when I see any of it.

Quite frankly I'm not even that wild about the filler panels.  I actually kind of like just having it all opened and seeing the mechanicals.  Even more so with one all chromed out like TC's or Q's recent upgrades.

I'll eventually get the FLHX stuff on (probably).  But I'm not so excited about it that I see it happening today or tomorrow.  But it'll get done sometime (probably.....).

I like it...  Does anyone have a picture of a chromed version installed--preferably on the rear of a blue 07 SEUC???  I like the idea of it, but would like to see it on a bike like mine before I hassle with ordering/shipping, etc....

Thx.

UPS just brought my order from Chicago HD, which included the "tail dragger" (91067-07). :apple: :orange: :bananarock: :pepper: :2vrolijk_21:  Been very busy and leaving town in a day or two, so will not get to install the new bling for a week or so.

Has anyone installed this piece themselves?  Looks like I will have to drill two holes in the rear fender to install.  My question is; after you drill the holes in the fender, do you suggest some type of corrosion prevention for the exposed metal around the edge of the newly drilled holes?

I will take a few pics of all the new bling and post in a couple of weeks.

Absolutely!  It doesn't have to be fancy, but you should at least apply a couple coats of touchup to the edge of the holes to seal out air and moisture.  There are other products such as zinc rich primers, wax sticks, etc., but I've found a couple coats of touchup work just as well as anything else.  If you don't have the correct color touchup, just use the clear.

Stick with your current plan... I did the same on my '05 SEEG and it looks amazing!  When that chrome piece came out this year I thought I had waisted my money on colour matching the filler strips and tail light assembly.  But when I saw the chrome piece on a friends bike I knew my money was well spent last year with my new addition to the rear fender.  Now that this part is no longer a "restricted part" reserved only for Street Glide repairs, I imagine you'll be see a few more out there.  However you'll still be a rarity as most will opt for the cheaper chrome version which for me just doesn't cut it.

Red color matched on a SEEG doesn't look bad at all.

Don,

Looks like you have a Bushtech trailer hitch on your bike, from the photo?

The chrome version will not work with the Bushtech hitch -- the back of the light hits the vertical tube for the draw bar.  If I am right and you do have the Bushtech hitch, did you have to modify the light to make it work?  Is this light different from the light on the chrome version?

Yes, it is a Bushtec hitch on the bike.  Didn't have to modify anything to make the two work together.  Only thing required was to be careful during the hitch install to make sure you're taking advantage of the adjustment slots.  Adjusted to take advantage of that travel in the bolt holes and there is plenty of room.

Sorry but I can't give you a comparison between the painted and the chromed version.  I knew I wanted the painted.  Really didn't care for chrome on that part.  So never made a side by side comparison.

Nothing special there.  Nearly every mounting hole in the Bushtec brackets has some elongation to them.  To allow for some adjustment in the assembly.  Just need to make sure and leave everything loose, tweak it the direction you need to, then tighten it all up.

Just put my hitch on last week - not sure mine has much, if any adjustment.....I will have to look at it again.  In any case, it wouldn't have enough adjustment to make room for the light in the chrome version of the fender light.

Thanks!

Just put my hitch on last week - not sure mine has much, if any adjustment.....I will have to look at it again.  In any case, it wouldn't have enough adjustment to make room for the light in the chrome version of the fender light.

Thanks!

There's not a lot of adjustment.  But enough.  At least for the standard painted version of the Street Glide light.

Only problem might be if it's an older Bushtec hitch.  They altered their hitches shortly after the Street Glides came out to account for the fender extension.  After the product change that became, however, the only model of hitch for the touring bikes.  So as long as it's recent stock you've got the best option they'll offer.

When I first installed mine it touched the fender extension.  Barely.  Was just sure I had all the holes used to get as far rearward as it would go.  Swore a little.  Had another beverage (or three).  Loosened it all back off again and pushed and tweaked and removed and loosened and swore and tweaked and tapped.  Then, I'll be damned, it all went back together with room to spare.  Gained 1/4" between the fender extension and the hitch.

It's very solid when it's all together too.  So if it clears it's good enough.  You can pick the ass end of the bike off the ground with the hitch and the hitch won't get closer to the fender extension.

I ordered mine a few weeks ago, so I would think it is the newest version.  I am going to go look at mine again as soon at the football game is over.  Boomer Sooner!

I haven't seen one of these on a Nanner but I will when mine arrives.  Painting the low profile mirrors so may as well color match this too at the same time.

First off it was a Twolane-pucker-lift.  Then to get a better view and actually lift it farther it was a scissor jack on a 4x4 directly under the hitch.

I'd love a better pic of your seat than I can see in your avatar

And if you get this on your fender, I am so wishing for some pics.

You gotta understand,  I have limited funds and even more limited abilities at the wrenching stuff.

I am only good at the wash and waxing and the peel and stick chrome.  I don't know how to wrench or do any electrical stuff.

Pics are so welcome.

After installing the hawg wired system (300W 4 speaker, fairing and lowers) I'm kinda liking the "peel and stick" idea! (and that darn funds thing is always getting in the way) Here are a couple of pics, not to great because it has been raining quit a bit lately. I had the seat made here at the Hollister, Ca. Corbin factory. They inserted the heating element into the seat foam so that I could retain a smooth top. (BTW. it's faux alligator, couldn't afford alligator bob's) Roger
