77 miles and already had first accident...
« on: May 24, 2011, 11:09:05 AM »

Hi All,

New to the board but not to HD (had 2003 Screamin' Eagle Deuce and an 2002 Road King prior to my FLTRUSE).

So, I picked up my bike a week ago and it has been raining pretty much every day since.  Managed to sneak in a ride this weekend in between kids' soccer games.  So, we finally have a beautiful day here and I wanted to ride to work.  I stopped briefly at a Dunkin' Donuts to take my wallet out of my back pocket.  I was at a dead stop, about to pull into a space, and a lady backs right out her parking space into me.  She had PLENTY of room to turn if she wanted but backed up without looking.

Knocked the bike over and me off the bike.  Luckily I was fine, but she scratched the corner of my saddle bag lid, scratched the latch, but I was pleasantly suprised that the bike went over pretty hard and the crash bars pretty much prevented any damage at all on the kickstand side.   Some minor scratches and I'm going to have her insurance replace EVERYTHING with a mark on it.

It is one of those things that most people would never notice in terms of "damage", but dealer already told me $1500+ to replace the scratched stuff.

I'm just pretty bummed since I haven't even had time to really enjoy the bike yet and figured that it would be MY stupidity that dropped it first.

By the way, this thing is freaking heavy.  I'm pretty strong, but thankfully there were two construction guys who witnessed it who helped me pick the bike up - It was sloped downhill and there was no way in heck that I would have been able to pick it up on my own.

Ugh...

Mogulbumm, I'm sorry for you on your maiden ride to have to encounter such stupidity.  Are you sure nothing else is scratched....no painted parts on corner of fairing, etc?  Check & double check.  Bottom edge of saddlebag?  Glad you didn't try to hoist her up all by yourself, cause 900+ lbs. on a slight decline will surely strain a muscle or pop a knee in all likelyhood even if you're in great shape and can dead lift that much without the adrelene flowing.  Good luck & ride safe.  spyder

Sorry to hear about your mishap but glad to hear you are ok! Just one of those things you have to chalk up to someone else's inattention to their surroundings. Too bad you had to pay the price! Just make sure she pays to make it new!

Thanks!  Dealer wants me to leave it there for a WEEK so they can assess th damage and get an estimate.  Luckily I have a couple of business trips coming up and they can work around that :)  I told them that anything with the smallest mark on it needs to get replaced.  And as upset as I was, I am thankful that I'm OK!

Sorry about this, Mogulbumm.  Skier?  I lived in Billerica for a year as a kid.  I am glad this was only cosmetic damage.  BTW, if the bike is out of service, the woman who who hit you is liable for your rental of another bike.  Just thinking "out loud."  Good luck with your repairs.

1st, welcome to the site and congratulations on getting a great bike. Unfortunately I dropped my bike and did a bit more damage than they are projecting on yours. However, the end result was pretty terrific.

Be sure to negotiate your keeping the damaged parts especially those that need paint work.  These parts have a market and are repairable.

BTW: There is a process to lift the bike by yourself that involves backing up to the seat and liftingit with your legs.
It's a good process to know in case you are by yourself IF it happens again and I sincerely hope it doesn't.

Glad you weren't injured.

Welcome from Oklahoma. Be glad she has insurance. Illegal here hit and run my truck in a parking lot and at least a few good people got the tag number. Too bad they didn't have insurance and cops did nothing to them. Be lucky if I ever get my deductable back.

I had a mishap the first 20 miles, had about $4,000 in replacing parts plus labor,
If you get a bid from the dealer turn that into Insurance, they will pay you on that.
Then go to the parts counter and ask for 20% off on the parts, and install your own parts if you are handy with fixing things

You guys are much more friendly here! I'm an amateur triathlete and am on a couple of those forums. Mostly great people, but also a lot of wannabe d-bags who feel the need to tout their podium finishes and lecture people. If I posted a similar accident there I'd have a bunch of replies as to what I did wrong!

Thanks for the support on the mishap!  Luckily it was minor and no injuries. I think I feel physical pain when I see a nice bike go down lol!

So far I'm loving what you guys have done with your CVOs!  Fullsac stage 1 and 2 kit should be in my hands Tuesday...

Too many idiots in this world Mogulbumm! I feel your pain! I had a 85 Wideglide that got taken out by a two time DUI cager. After I got put back together and the bike got put back together (both of which took about a year), i was out riding and stopped at a 7-11, I came out just in time to see a lady in a Cadillac back out of a parking spot straight back and nail my bike. It went down really hard. I had purposely parked in a remote corner but she found me anyways. She starts driving away without even getting out to look at the damage she caused. I got her stopped by beating on the side and window of her car and spewing loud profanity. Fortunately, there was an off duty cop that had just driven in that saw the whole thing and he intervened before the episode escalated into a murder scene. Her reply to the cop was "I didn't hit it that hard so I didn't think there would be any damage."  I'm glad you weren't hurt which is the improtant thing but I still feel your pain!!! I wish you incident free riding from here on out.

Good Grief, OldRocker.  And I'm sure that the 'lady' that mowed down the scooter just got a safe moving violation and her insurance premiems maybe went up for a few years.  No real consequences (since the off-duty LEO saved her and you).  spyder

Well Spyder it went like this. She was ticketed for failure to have insurance (it had lapsed and she didn't renew). I got stuck with the deductable ($500.00). When all was said and done, I lost and she had to pay a fine. Her car was towed to the police pound until she could show proof of insurance. Hey, at least it wasn't a CVO!

Well, you've got a much better attitude than I would have...I commend you for that.  Something is way wrong with our justice system in this country when it comes to vehicle operators.  :-[ spyder

HillBilly hello from TN.

Pretty heavy and your a strong guy. Love it, me too I thought. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

The first time I let mine fall I was up front on a ride or 120 bikes and as it leaned over I held with all my might not letting it go over all the way. I could not get it back up but was glad I did not let it fall. When I gave up and let it fall I noticed that it did not go over any further. It was resting on the crash bar and I was not holding anything. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

My pride was devastated and I wished I could disappear. :nervous: Good to not be hurt.

Congrats on the new ride and welcome to the site from central Alabama. :bananarock: :drink:
Sorry you had to experience someone else's stupidity. >:(
Glad you were not hurt. :coolblue:
The RGUs are heavy, lifting with your back to the bike does work but is still quite a strain.
Get everything sorted and ride on.
