I Will Buy A New Harley When...
« on: September 23, 2010, 01:46:04 PM »

What would make you pull the trigger on a new CVO HD in the future?

Ok, I may be accused of being sacrilegious, but inquiring minds want to know.

I know several of you have purchased 2011's or have them on order (and bless your little heart for that), but for those not buying a 2011... What would make you pull the trigger on a new CVO HD in the future?

I seriously considered buying a 2011, until I started reading the same old crap.... Same Song, Second Fifth Verse.  I already have an 08 with many of the same problems the 11's have.  Each model year seems to have a unique issue or three, but the common theme, to me anyway, seems to be the 110 motor.  And based on info put out by the MoCo themselves, they have cheapened the quality even more to save a dollar, rather than make improvements or fix known issues.

I decided to stick with the 08 for now.  I own multiple scooters.... only one HD right now, and likely to stay that way until the MoCo comes up with some better ideas.

So, what would make you pull the trigger on a new CVO HD in the future?

The same thing that motivated me to buy my 09 SERG. I totaled  my 05.

I'll buy another one when I get the urge. I've got two great ones now. For all of the bitchin issues I still dig the hell out of them and intend to ride H. D. until I've got to hang up my leathers for good.

Simple answer for me.... "When I need one". ;D

When it comes to vehicles I've gotten over having the latest/greatest (and when it comes to what has come out lately from the MoCo sometimes the latest ain't the greatest :nervous:)... my cage ('00 Yukon w/58K miles) is 10 years old (still looks like it's a couple years old) and I don't plan on replacing it until needed.

I have never owned more the one motorcycle at a time, have had several cars at one time when I was younger but when I had them seemed like one would sit all the time and not get used. :nixweiss:

I must have gotten the only good one made in '10...If ya haven't ridden a '10 or '11, the new frame, suspension tires, etc. are differant like nite and day over the '08.  I thought my 03 FLHT was the bomb (and it was) then traded to '08 Ultra to get ABS etc. and thought it was the bomb (and it was!) I wouldn't trade my CVO 110 for any of those back.  Did the exhaust, intake, dyno on all 3 and this one runs like a scalded dog and STILL gets great mileage on the long haul. KNOCK WOOD.  I love my scooter!

Water-cooled and Balanced motor in a SEUC that puts out at near or over 120ft/tq. Even then, I'd probably wait a year or two so they can work out the bugs.

Until then, I'll just run my 2006 SEUC until the wheels fall off.

as I usually ride some 20.000 m a year I and got my present bike July 2009 I will be looking for a replacement somewhen in early 2012. If you don't sell Harley's around 50.000 m you have to keep them until they break because the resale value of bikes over that magic number is just a bad joke  ::)

After totalling my 98 RG I almost bought a new 07 but this site saved me from a lot of grief, so bought a used 00 SERG and couldn't be happier. I'm not going to be tempted into a big inch motor until it's wet and then not for the first year or two. I think Harley favoring the 103 this year on some of their production bikes was a good move for those who can't wait. I'm forcasting a radical fixed fairing, wet motor powered bike the MoCo will be proud to feature the bird on again. The emission laws dictate next year is the year for my vision and you know Willie looks at this site for inspiration.  :P   Doc

But a used 06 or earlier, In a heartbeat!

Note that I said 06 and earlier.

Starting in 2007 there were and still are issues with the cranks.
An 06 and earlier doesn't have Throttle By Wire.
Starting in 2007 with the 110's there were leaking issues with heads and cylinders.
Starting in 2007 there were issues with valve guides slipping in the heads.
Note that most decent companies that cared could figure out how to resolve that problem fairly quickly.
Two model years later my 2009 front cylinder exhaust valve guide slipped and bent the exhaust valve and bent the intake valve.
My 09 electrical connections at the ECM corrode and causes the bike to go into "limp mode."
Throttle by wire as presented by the MoCo is a scary thing.
I have had issues twice with mine.
06 and earlier didn't have a tank recall.
The 103 and 88" motors didn't have piston slap at approx 2800 RPM.
The design of the 09 swing arms allows for water to intrude into the interior of the swingarm and be trapped, I wonder how much rust there is in there.
The MoCo denied warranting my compensator with the SE one, my dealer had to get involved with that to keep me from paying for the SE Comp.
I have had twin cam bikes since 1999 and have collectively put 147,000 miles on the various bikes not counting the 09 SEUC.
My 09 SEUC has spent more time in the shop being repaired for warrantable issues than all of the other twin cams combined.
IMHO the Motor Company has become a company that doesn't give a rats ass about customer service.
I think the customer service employees are concerned about saving the MoCo money by denying warrantable claims so they will look good and preserve their jobs.
I believe it's all about profits to the shareholders, the customers be damned.
I'm very lucky to have a great dealer that has stood behind the MoCo products even when the MoCo wouldn't.

There is plenty more, this is just a start.

Look at Scott's post above, this is a man that knows motors, he knows.

I'd look for a nice used pre '07 ride...

I wish everyone with a 07 and up 110 Screamin Eagle a lot of luck. Post like mine above are usually followed by 110 owners that have had no issues with theirs.
I think that's great but believe with enough miles their time will come.
I have put 43K miles on my 09 in 23 months so I post the above from experience not hearsay.

147,000 miles on pre 07 bikes and other than 2 stators there was no issues.  I thought that needed repeating!  ;)

Don't know why or when I would buy another, but I have copied SBB on the transmission shaft bearing.  Replaced last month.  Chip, I would swear that was a picture of my bearing failure.  Dealer also installed a new SE Compensator under warranty at the same time.

Rick, I have to wonder how many of us that have had that same issue.
Also I didn't post the issues above to be considered just another raving lunatic that pisses and moans about everything.
smkymtnboy asked the question and I gave the best answer to explain why I feel as I do.
Jerry GRC has nailed it many times, If there are so many issues then WHY do we keep buying the product.

Not going to!

A blue and a green FXR3 (his and hers) or another Classic SERG or a 06 SEUC could possibly be in my future.
But not a new one!
And the sad part is, I really wanted a 2013 SE 110th Anniversary in Silver and Black.
But why support a company that doesn't support their customers.
To me that seems a little stupid!

When they bring back the yellow/charcoal-silver paint scheme for a SEUC.

I am a vacation rider.  Meaning I rack up most of my miles on trips, and I know this sounds crazy but I would love to see these problems SBB describes, because that would mean I am racking up the miles!  I am self employed in a seasonal trade(the riding season!) and have a baby, so regular riding is limited during the week.  But I look forward to an extended riding season with my first fall season/fairing w/J&M/vented lowers combo.

Maybe a  "new to me" HD's but I can assure myself (today) no more new models for miker....Now a  cream puff 62 duo-glide, 98 or 03 Anny road glide, 04 B&B, 99 red fxr...to name a few...maybe....The new models with the combination of lack of quality paired up with my apparent lack of ability to find a dealer that is capable or competent have made the decision easy...Wish it weren't so, truley.

Chip, I have throttle cables on my 07. I believe TBW started in 08. I'm afraid to buy a new one again myself. I have been down since Pala but today I get to ride again and we might be rainless for the next week. WoooHoo gonna squeeze all the riding I can in before it turns ugly.

Thanks Mike, I need to be ready for Tahoe so I will have enough time to break in the motor again. This morning I am so excited to ride it's almost like getting a new bike. :apple: :carrot: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pepper: :pineapple: :orange: :mango: :bananarock:

What would make you pull the trigger on a new CVO HD in the future?

Since I got a color I love...and I upgraded the exhaust so the bike performs great...it would take a good bit.

I do know one thing...if it has a 110 cubic inch engine it MUST be water cooled.

...and maybe like some other hi end vehicles, a separate dealer network. I'm pissed at the last dealer that put two extra quarts of oil in my bike. Dummy me though for not checking it until both rocker box gaskets blew and the air clearner and bsr got soaked with oil. I'll be getting the bike back today after a two day layover and continue on to MV.

I Will Buy A New Harley When...

I am in the same boat as , SBB,MIKER,GRC,FIREDOOD

I agree with all of them

Paula will say "I'll believe it when i see it" but I'm hopefully done with the new bike thing. I had a lot of problems with my 07 (just like Rooster) and tried to get it "lemon law" but couldn't take the amount of time it would take to get rid of the 07 and get an 09. It was my mistake because I just learned that i may have been able to get rid of the 07 and get an 09 without selling one and buying another. My 09 has had problems just like Chip, but I have worked most of them out and would not like to start all over. I see things like Don (isellbulls) hording 04's,05' which I think is a good idea.  :soapbox:

OK, I will keep my 09, and if i ever get a second bike it will be a huckleberry (04 seeg )

 IMHO

Good point Marty!
I was at the Harley shop on the 09 SEUC a while back when Rob the General Manager walked by.
He asked how many miles I had on the bike.
At that time there was 41K.
He said, "It's about time for a new one!"
I looked at him and said, "No way, you know the issues I have had with this one. No way I'm starting over!"
Just not going to happen!

I am pretty sure that will never happen........

I am not sure what would tip the scales for me.
Too many used bikes out there with little or no mileage on them, and at least no expectation of warranty work being done.

I have spent too much money on getting my bike right and would not want to go through it again......

so maybe Never or until till I get an itch that I cannot scratch.....

I'm still veryy happy with my 04. I have it just the way I want it and I'm not sure if I could be happier with anything else. I hear about the issues with the 110, TBW, I have the best of everything and it runs better than ever.. Thank you John Sachs too.   Can't forget about him :)

I just got into the Harley Bikes this year on my 2000 SERG.  For 2011 they are making SEURG... if they make one in the colours I like OWB, in 6 yeears after some depreciation, I would consider.  Might even be tempted to by a Water Cooled SEURG earlier, but right now I love my 2000.  If the engine dies I might even just put a bigger one it.

Ok, responses are kinda what I expected when I started this thread.

Me?... I'm not sure I will ever buy another Harley.  I feel like I have been screwed over enough on this last one.  Way too many problems, and I don't suspect the problems are over either.  I have about 22 months left on the extended warranty... will probably dump the 08 within that time.

I am a lot like many others... If I buy another Harley, it will probably have to be a water-cooled engine.  The V-Rod engine seems to be pretty solid... I figure the MoCo will finally wise up and build a bigger version to put in a touring frame.  Even if, I will probably give it 2 or 3 years before I spend my $$$$$ on one.

I have kinda speculated that by 2013 we will see a water-cooled engine in a touring frame.  So, that's two years.  Then, as I mentioned, I would want to give it a few years to see if it is worth my $$$$$.  Now I am out to about 5 years... So, maybe the next question should be:  Will the MoCo make it another 5 years?

Not trying to draw fire here... just looking at it from a realistic prespective knowing what it takes to make a business thrive.  Not sure the MoCo can do anything to make HD thrive  :nixweiss:

Thank you for this thread.
Lot of info here.
Now, on to your question.

Will the MoCo make it another 5 years?

Based on the product they are producing now and have for the last few years then NO!
Especially if they are counting on my business.
I love my Harley's but I love to ride more.

Will have to see how this one does long term.  Only have 22K on it so far.  Problems have been minor - rear wheel bearings replaced at 19.5K with tire, heated grips just died - new ones on order, indicator bezel on dash cracked (!?!).  I noticed last week that one of the rear floorboards is mounted backwards - don't know how that slipped by me.  Primary is starting to get a little noisy - I'll have them pull the cover at next service.  Oh, and the front forks suck, rear suspension isn't much better.  I have a 5 year warranty, and lifetime service plan (thank God), so will have it at least thru the warranty.

That said, the bike is a blast to ride, gets 44+mpg  unless I'm pulling the trailer, then it's around 40.  I have had the front wheel leave the ground in a first gear roll-on.  The handling, overall, is not bad for a huge grocery hauler.  I've had riders on sport bikes say "I didn't know you could ride a bike like that, like that".

My dealer is MUCH improved with new management over the last year or so.  Even with my service plan, I'm not made to feel like they are doing me a favor to service my bike.

My other 2 bikes are a 2000 Moto Guzzi V11 sport and a Kawasaki ZRX1200R (leaned on).  Probably won't buy another Japenese bike, but I like the european stuff.

I'll buy another CVO, but it will have to really interest me, and will probably be a touring mount.  My next HD might be a XR1200.  Hmmm, that would be cool in a CVO version.

No floorboards may be a problem...My fat arse sitting on it prolly look like a gorilla trying to pooch a football anyways... :P

I'll prolly just fix the 09 up for another 5-8K of non HD parts but wont buy another new bike from HD without some major reform.

After riding my son's V-Rod I've determined there is no CVO in my future ever again.  And I have one of the relatively good '08s.  I love it, but recognize that I got lucky and regardless, paid way to much.

So for the same or less money:

'08 or newer V-Rod with ABS
Road Glide Fairing Kit and Electronics (Hey... I like the CB and intercom built in).
Modify a set of Road Glide lowers and crash bar
Add a set of floor boards
Throw on a set of Corbin hard bags or go the HD route (Need to modify the exhaust side bag I think)
Change the suspension and bars to something that's a bit more tour comfy.
Some engine work to get the tourque up just a bit to carry all that extra weight.

So there you go.  I know it's been done before.  Just check the V-Rod forums and you'll see lots of info on it.  They even make the fairing mount kit.  But the point is I'll be giving Harley a lot less money then for a CVO.  And I'll have a much better bike as that Harley-Porscheson is a pretty reliable piece of machinery.

Ride Safe,
JC

Thats funny.  I Bought the VROD before the bagger.  After having a custom corbin low profile seat made, and a round trip to sturgis (2400 miles) on that new low profile really cool looking seat, I bought the SEEG.  ;D

Kept both bikes for a few years.  Finally sold the VROD for half of what i had into it 5 years old, and was glad to get it.

I will buy a new SE bagger when i win the lottery, or when my current one can no longer be ridden.

A low profile seat?  I have the advantage of being tall enough that I don't need to go the low profile route.  I also have a seat customizer who's a member of my HOG chapter who can add extra padding and since I really don't care one iota about looking cool, I'm hoping a modified seat and better suspension will cure the issues you had.  I do know that it rides a hell of a lot smoother then Nemo as far as vibration goes and Nemo isn't bad at all to begin with.  The fact is that I won't do this unless I can afford to make it my second bike as I intend to keep Nemo and add a second bike in 4 years after all the current vehicles are paid off.  So worse case scenerio I have a touring bike and bar hopper that's got bags.

Well I know this dosen't hold a candle to most guys/gals on this site, but I have bought three Harleys and none of them were "New". The 09SEUC was the newest with the least amount of miles on the odometer. I don't think I would buy a "New" CVO. I might buy a new bike for my wife if she ever decides "IF" and which one she wants. For me to buy again, the color and graphics would have to really fire me up and be better than the one I have. Judging from the colors choices of 2010 and 2011 models I don't really see that happening. No offense to all those owners, I just was not impressed with the colors. To be honest it wasn't so much a color problem but the "Flames", flames and more flames.

Hey Jeff,
You shoulda told me you were in the area.  I coulda ducked out of work early and met up.

If you're referrring to bike we bought for Sean, the smaller gas tank and lack of anti-lock breaks make it a less attractive bike.  Sean can do a custom paint job (we have a friend who's a painter) but you can't switch out the gas tank or add ABS to the '05.  They have the same engine and the price was 3K less for the '08.  Plus he liked the Blue on the '08 better then the Teal on SE version.

If you're referring to my desire to make a "Water Glide" one day...  It's along way off and will also require the larger tank and ABS to meet my technology and convienence requirements.  Nothing against the CVO V-Rods, but I think the '08+ are better bikes.

We'll have to get together in the Spring after Sean get's the bike in his possesion so you can check it out.

To answer the question posed by the title of this thread

WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER !

I might buy a used 09 B/W/O SERG if one came along at the right time and price, but that'd be used and a private sale. The MoCo got some $300k of my hard earned money over the years and never made me feel appreciated even when times were good. Of late, they've alienated me to the extreme and I don't see it changing.

Ya know...I luv my 08 SERK...just as long as  you don't look close!  Look close you'll see chrome pitting and powder coat flaking. I won't go into the mech. issues. China here, china there...MoCo has taken the cheap route and charge way too much... I'll never touch one again! Muddy

Unfortunately, for me that is, this is another typical BMW design issue where they bring the fairing lowers too far back and my knees would constantly be rubbing against them.  That was the same problem I had with my K100LT.   :-\

I know not a detail about it, but I do know that Schaeffer's Harley Davidson in Orwigsburg, PA took one in as a trade recently.  I haven't seen it, don't know the miles, have no idea what price they're asking.  But if you're looking for one, a call is cheap.  570-366-0143.  Tell 'em JC sent you.

Yes.  That was the one they moved to put Sean's V-Rod out front to surprise him.  But I was talking to a guy yesterday who'd just bought a '11 CVO Road Glide and mentioned he'd traded his Autumn Haze in for it.  So they should have one of them as well.

I have probably already bought my last *NEW* Harley.  I rode metric stuff all my life, planning to get an Electra Glide "someday".  When my dad died at age 66 it was a wake up call and I decided it was "SOMEDAY" right now.  Within a month or two I had sold all the metrics and brought this one home.

2005 Ultra ... added a D&D Fatcat pipe, Power Commander, Big Sucker intake and some comfort goodies

By the time I had it like I wanted it, I could pull the tourpak and have this ... absolutely loved this bike, and it was one of the best color schemes H-D ever made (to me anyway)

But then the '07s came out, and I just had to have one ... had to get the big motor and 6 speed tranny.
I put a lot of miles on this bike, but was never really happy with it.  Didn't run quite right, tranny was noisy and ratios were wrong, I was always rowing it through the gears.  Before long I wished I had my '05 back.

Then I heard about this baby for sale, and jumped on it.  Lots of folks here say it's the best bike Harley ever made. Who am I to argue, I love this thing.

I really don't see myself on one of these new "fly by wire" bikes.  The vodoo electronics in the EFI and ECM on the '05 is enough for me.

Have you heard about the "data bus" electronics on the 2011 Softails?  Another "improvement" from HD that sounds more like a nightmare to me.

Considering how Harley has managed to screw up every other bit of technology they've borrowed from the auto industry, I think a two year "debugging" period would be wise before purchasing one.  We should see the biggest issues this coming year on the Softails, but Harley has also shown a propensity for having their first attempts at fixes not be terribly robust.  I figure if they were to make no further changes to anything, and just concentrate on fixing all the numerous issues they already have, it would be safe to make a purchase in about 2016 or so.

Me... when would I buy a new Harley?  When they get new management.  When they put emphasis back in the quality of their products and the people who buy them.

I've got a 2008 CVO Ultra, aprox. 8000 miles.  Like most I love my cycle.  I've been through the fuel tank recall and my heads, cylinders, and pistons have been replaced.  Then there's 3 sets of heated grips, crack in the trunk through the hinge holes, the excessive heat problem, LOW oil pressure, blown gaskets, etc...  That's the warranty stuff.

Since then I've spent thousands fixing the chit HD calls a motorcycle.  NONE of what you’ll read below was warranted by HD.  I have an extended service plan with HD until 2014.  It’s $50 before they’ll even considering looking at it…  In many cases HD will randomly change tolerances on fit/form/function of known problems to avoid the responsibility of warranty repair, e.g. crankshaft.

• Crankshaft had .0065" runout discovered during a cam change.  Trued/plugged/welded/balanced.
• Timken bearing conversion to the case.
• New piston rods to get rid of the weak, out of balance rods HD put in.
• New pistons installed at 3500 miles galled badly from slap.  Install new pistons matched to fresh bore.
• Cam plate cam bores were worn bad, at least .010" out of round.  New SE cam plate with bronze bushings.
• Oil pump was galled and worn badly.  Oil pressure (hot) at idle < 5 psi., highway 10 psi.  Installed new Feuling oil pump.

…and the list goes on.  Note once again I did say 8000 miles and these were MY COSTS.  All this just to make the bike reliable and acceptable to ride as intended so I don’t have to worry about it grenading while on a road trip.

Somewhere HD lost its way and if I had to guess I’d say somewhere around 2003-2006 something happened at HD and a new quality policy was released and a “Ship it” mentality was adopted.  HD is concerned with product offerings rather than the quality of their product.  These bikes are assembled with inferior, outsourced components lacking the tolerance and material strength to handle the day to day workload is should be expected to do.  The variability of in the components HD Band-Aids together is appalling.  If Ford, GM, or Chrysler engineered or allowed quality to plummet like Harley they’d have been shut down YEARS ago.  So why do we come back… an image.

I get a bit overzealous with this… I’m with SSB and would say that anything post 2006 that HD has produced to present is basically inferior junk.  Oh they’re beautiful to look at but if I could give a prospective buyer one remaining piece of advice…

Buy used.  Find a clean one and let someone else take the hit for depreciation.  Then plan to spend anywhere from $3000-$4000 to fix the engine making it reliable and a pleasure to ride.  At a minimum figure crank, Timken conversion, pistons, cylinder work.  You’ll now have a bike that you won’t have to worry about taking off for a 1000 mile ride.

Can't say I disagree with that.  I figure once I put a Baker 6spd in my SEUC, I'm gonna run the thing until it dies.

I guess I like my dealer AND this is the best touring bike I've ever had is why I'd buy another CVO.  I could step down to a Limited, but then I'd have to put all the good stuff that comes with the CVO.

Buy another one, I think about it and could, but thank God for this site!! My 81 metric runs great too! Not one problem in 29 years.

Yeah, that's why I have a metric, too.  54K miles on it and only had to replace rear brake pads and a clutch cable.  Great bike.

Hope I never have to buy another one, but will look for a SEEG if something happens to the Huckleberry.  I don't think much has changed since HD started making these scooters.  They've always had their problems, it just gets worse as they try to make them more modern w/ all the added do-dads.  I luv 'em and hope to be able to ride one for many more moons. But, may not buy a new one anytime soon with all the good used ones at great prices now.  spyder

I am sure I will trade the wifes Heritage in another year or so.  It's 22 months old and has 57K on it.  Only one issue so far, a stator went out with 53K on the bike.  Figure she will get a new one around  75 to 80K miles on this one.

Me, when they come out with another Road Glide CVO, Just not ready for an Ultra yet.

I have a 09 SERG (my 3rd Harley) and it is a great bike !! Had small issues but nothing major the bike rides and handles great  :)  No other bike motor can compare to the sound of a Harley V-Twin with the right pipe's  :-*   Would I buy a new CVO ?  I do not think so used CVO prices have drop to a price point were you can pick up a 6 to 9 month old CVO bike for about 20% to 30% off MRSP.  And the bike is still under factory warranty.  :bananarock:

-----When they come out with another Road glide CVO plain. Meaning while a tour pak is nice when needed, I want to be able to remove it when on day rides, or without the BSR. Also, I don't want the lowers, so the RG Ultra is not an interest to me, although it looks real nice. With 22,000 on my 09, I either have to trade it after one more year, or keep it til the pipes fall off. Now I'll elect to keep it, as I have it set up just the way I want it and am happy with it.  There's just something nice about a new bike.

Had my 05 UC stolen in April. I was going to buy a new 2011 SE...but after reading this thread, I decided to do some research and try and find a used SEUC...I found an 06 with less than 8K miles on it ...like new...good price..negotiated in taxes, title, and a 1 year warranty ...I guess I am now the owner of my first SE.....pick it up later this week.....come on springtime and sunshine!
Thank Guys!

Congrats on your "new" ride.  I don't think you would have gone wrong with a new one, but to each his/her own.  As long as you're happy that's all that matters.  Just remember, in a forum like this, you're mainly only going to hear the complaints, so it will appear that they outweigh the good.  So don't always judge what's good or bad by what's said in here.  You'll get the truth, that's for sure, but you won't necessarily get a balanced view because those of us that haven't had any problems with our 110's aren't saying anything, cuz we don't have anything to b*tch about and we're happy.  ;)  JMO.

OK

I have posted about issues on my 09 SEUC.
Mine may be the only one that has had issues. (now that is funny)
But my posting about the issues is an effort to inform others of problems I have had.
And to inform people considering purchasing a new bike with a 110 of what potential problems they may encounter.
Some may pretend they have had no issues but all it takes is to go back and read their post.
Read their post, from tour pak replacement to gasket problems to cylinder liner movement.
Here's an example of another 110 from the gentleman above that supposedly had no issues,
Quote
Unfortunately, I barely made it to 5K before my first set started leaking...looking at how things are going, if I had more miles on the SEUC, I'd probably be on my third set of gaskets, or first set of new jugs...it's disheartening to know that this is going to happen and the MoCo isn't doing anything but band-aid (read cheap) fixes to the engine.
or
Quote
wipe the oil off of the cylinder fins with the survey form, take a pic with the survey form shoved in between the fins, and send them back with the statement, I just thought I'd send you proof that the 110's, contrary to the MoCo's "head in the sand stance", do have leaking problems.
Time seems to cloud people's memory.
Pretending there have been no issues does not negate the fact that there were issues.
I say again, best of luck to all that own a 110 but my experience has shown me that my 09 SEUC 110 is not the motor my 95's and 103's are or were.
I don't say that to offend anyone but to inform those owners of issues I have had.
Just like me, it's your money and you should spend it as you please.
Just remember, I wanted a winner when I bought the 09, turns out I bought into the dream also.

Chip, I could be wrong, but I believe both of those quotes you referred to were on 07 110, which had a known, and finally acknowledge, problem with the rear cylinder head.  I had a rear cylinder head gasket leak on my 07 110, and had the MoCo's product enhancement done, and never had another problem with that engine again.  But here's something, on my '02 88, guess what issues I had with that one?  You guessed it a leaking rear cylinder head gasket...did that make the 88's bad?  My point is, it's great to inform, but IMO there are potential issues with any HD purchase regardless of the engine.  Do I feel the 110 is any more susceptible to failure than any of the other engines?  I don't know, but like you, I just want  people to know that there are two sides to every coin.  I would imagine if you look far enough back in the threads you'll find issues with the 95's and 103's also.

Thanks Charley.
I agree there are two sides to every coin but I also think an informed purchaser is an educated purchaser. I would like to think/hope that the issues I have had are a minority in the big 110 picture. But whether it's a minority or much more, my goal is to inform others of potential issues. I was informed and chose to buy one and move ahead. Today with 48K miles on an 09 bike I probably have experienced most of the issues I can. (knock on wood) With that experience has come the knowledge of what, how and who can help me to resolve any future issue. That knowledge/experience is why I still own that bike today!
Thanks for your response!

I think what Chip is saying is we would all hope to draw the long straw, and for the price of a new CVO they should ALL come with a long straw.

Maybe a lot of the engine issues have slowed down, but reading about
current issues over the past few months, I'm thinking they moved. Now it seems
to be paint, scratches, wrong body panels, wheel weights, electronics, etc.
I'm somewhat on Chip's side, as long as you know what your getting into!
I've stuck with my 06, and so far I've drawn the "LONG" straw.

I agree, and in a perfect world, that would happen.  But, even if you buy the top of line Mercedes, you can still end up with the short straw.  No matter how much you pay for any kind of a vehicle, are you guaranteed that you're going to get the long straw and not have problems.  Some have problems, some don't, and the very unfortunate ones get lemons.

Now with the paint issues and stuff like that, I agree, that's just pi$$-poor QC on the MoCo's part and whomever is in charge of that division, along with all the inspectors, should be fired!!  IMO.

Red, I agree. I should have said alot higher percentage should have come with the long straw, at least the 07-08's. Personally I knew I was in for trouble when I took the stock AC off and found the TB gasket sitting in the middle of the hole and knowing some SOB at the factory drilled the screws in looking right at it installing it that way.

I don't get Red Devil's reasoning.  Why should paint issues be looked at any differently than repetitive engine, electronic, or other problems? :nixweiss:

They shouldn't.  If it's a repetitive problem that affects a majority of the product sold, then it is a design flaw that needs to be corrected in the manufacturing process.  Like the initial head gasket issue was addressed.  But where at what percentage of failure it is considered a basic flaw?  10 failures, 100 failures, 1000 failures?  I don't know.  I'm sure there is a percentage somewhere in the minds of designers where they accept a certain percentage of failures as not being a design or complete product failure.  I'm sure there have been problems out there, besides the head gasket problems, that have happened to more than one or two people, or even 10 for that matter, but does that make it a design flaw and immediately condemn the whole line?  I don't know the answer to that.  Mechanical failures, for the most part, are internal, and won't be discovered until the vehicle gets some mileage on it.
On the other hand, cosmetic issues, one would think, should be caught right away.  I can see a bad paint job right now, but I can't necessarily see a part that may fail in 5K miles, unless I've seen that same part repeatedly fail in the same time frame.  Like I said earlier, I think if we look back at the postings for 95 and 103 engines, we'll find complaints about them.  The 110 is no different.  There are those that have had problems and there are those that haven't.  Has the MoCo been totally vigilant in catching all the problems, obviously not, and shame on them for not.

The only thing that would make me buy a new one is if my BSR decides she wants her own bike, or if something comes out that catches my eye more than the 09 O/B SERG I have.  There's not been a stock bike I've seen that I like better; RG is the best road bike I've ever ridden; and I am generally satisfied with performance on mine after the minor mods I've made.  But, of course, once I do everything to it I want - then it just might be time to start over...  :orange:
