Cee Bailey's 14" Dark Windshield@ $300...NO THANKS!
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:16:23 PM »

Been avidly following development of the Cee Bailey SERG windshield.  Called to order one this am and the guy says the 14" dark is $300 and mumbled something about $250 or such for the light tinted...I couldn't hear very well after the $300.  I asked about doing a "Group Buy" for the CVO Owner's Group and he said he doesn't do "Group Buys".  I thanked him POLITELY and told him that I was no longer interested and bid him farewell.  Can you believe that :soapbox: :nixweiss:

Joe did tell us that the new and improved SERG windshield was going to cost more, and that sounds like what he was speaking of. the ones that ordered the original got a deal because of the error made. but going forward Mas Dinero.

Wow, I just got off the phone with a guy a CEE Bailey.  I was told 275 for the dark 14".  That is 20 more than the sheet that was posted earlier.  Then I see this thread.

I think I still want it from what I read.  I can not however figure out if the shield the guys here have been testing are the Euro or the Dome.  Thats why I logged on to check and see if I could figure that out.

I was told they had 20 orders.

Are people getting the Dome shape or the Euro shape?

But think about :
If you try 2 or three other shield which do not satisfie you then it won`t get cheaper . This CEE TRSSC should fit perfect , i guess .

So, what is the price? I called last week and was told "...about $250..." Then we have quotes of $270 and $300 given to people here. What's the straight story?

And no group buy?

I've been watching the Cee Bailey's discussion here with great interest. My Grey Ghost will be here in the next couple of weeks. I'm not crazy about the stock windshield. I've got an 8" KW on my '07 FLTR, but don't think KW is the way to go after what I've heard here. However, that may be where I end up... or maybe CV... Frankly, I'm not interested in a $300 windshield. That's just crazy, if you ask me.

Rick, I tried several high dollar shields and was less then satisfied, I wound up with a stock takeoff from an 09 standard Roadglide,it fits fine using the CVO Seal, It cost me $36.00 on E-bay and the look and wind protection suit me well.

While I agree the price is on the very high side.  It looks to be the best shield out there as of this time.

I am still trying to figure out for sure if all the pictures I am seeing on this site are the dome version.  That is what it looks like, but I sure do not want to make a $300 mistake

If we cared about cost, we wouldn't be here. It's all about form and function. CB has all the form. the function is still being tested, but the returns so far are good.

The two shields I tested were the 14" dark tint round top and the Lt. tint 15" round top I guess they could  be called a dome top but these were for 09 SERG only and will not fit older SERGs or stock RGs. I was told that the flat top Euro was droped from the 09 SERG line up as it looked bad on the bike.  Doc

Just MHO I do beleive these shields to be better than anything I have tryed before, I have nothing to gain if they sell or not. Put on over 400 miles with the 14" Dark Tint and it will never come off.  Doc

Doc,

I beg to differ, these shields will fit the standard FLT fairings.  All you have to do is order the seal for the wind deflector that came on the 09 SERG.  That same wind deflector is advertised in the HD catalog as fitting all other Felts as well.  The first shield you got from them was indeed a bad fit but with slotting of the center hole it would have dropped down in place better than you show it in the first thread.  CB is flat WRONG (Joe) when they say the fairings are different.

Tell me, you got your shields for free right?  For testing them and reporting back the results?  Would you pay out $300+shipping for an unknown shield?

I mean no disrespect and I've said before that I appreciate all the work you and others poured into this to make this happen and I truly hope these CB shields are the answer to our buffeting woes.

That being said, it really PI$$ES me off that considering all the help Cee Bailey got from people on this forum and in the CVO Owner's Group that they won't do a group buy.

I hadn't said anything, but that's what I thought, too. Can't see the MoCo making a different fairing for the SERGs. Just doesn't make sense.

Tell me, you got your shields for free right?  For testing them and reporting back the results?  Would you pay out $300+shipping for an unknown shield?

Don't know if anyone got a free CB shield out of this. I do know that those who ordered the old CB shield got the new one at the old price. Makes me wish I'd ordered a CB shield a few weeks ago. DOH!

Does it really cost CB 1.5x to make the new SERG TRSSC shield as it does for the stock TRSSC shield? I dunno. Seems a stretch to me.

If we cared about cost, we wouldn't be here. It's all about form and function.

Maybe for some. For me it's about a balance between form, function and price. And it may be that the price that is painful for me is not for someone else. So be it.

[/quote]

Many would say about us " some have more money than sense" since we bought the $30K+ bikes and it may be true to a point.  Although when I looked back at my 04 RK Custom, I clearly had over $30K into it so when justifying this bike to myself, I just added up things like 110 kit, paint set, wheels (oops, I'm over $10K) and added it to the $20K for a FLT. ???  Easy decision then ::)  Next came convincing the better half :nixweiss: ...not so easy!

I've worked in aircraft maintenance for over 30 years and my background is in structures to include Plastics and composits...I know what goes into making these shields.  After the initial investment in setting up the machinery or making jigs, fixtures or molds, its not much more work to produce 100 than it is 10.  Doing the finish work like polishing and cleaning up the sharp edges takes no longer than doing the old type.

Look at it this way.  If I were CB, I'd jump at a group buy...why you ask?  Because if there is a shield out there that we the SERG owners prefer, wouldn't it make sense to ensure my shield was on as many of these bikes that attract crowds all by themselves?  Hell yea I would!  And the fact that these shields fit all other FLTs makes each of our bikes a billboard for CB.  I believe they are looking at this shortsighted trying to recoup their R&D rather than looking at the BIG PICTURE...JMHO

First off, I did not get my Cee Bailys shield for free. I orderd online and recieved a shield that did not fit as it was disigned to fit non-09 SERGs but stock RGs. Joe at Cee Bailys was aware of the fit issue and they returned my shield on there dime. I was one of the first people that recieved a 09 SERG Cee Bailys shields made to fit our bikes and was sent two to test (prototypes) I also tested the new hardware and install instructions and was asked from Joe to check things out. The fit is perfect useing the 09 SERG molding (gasket) the hardware was also perfect which made the install that much better, also his installation instructions were on the money. The two shields I have now will be trashed and I am awaiting the newer shield for my bike. As to weather they fit older bikes I only passed on what I was told and have not tried them on Non 09 SERGs. BTW I was told they will not fit.
I will only say this my search for a windshield that works is over. Also I did get this new shield at the older price. Would I pay more for a shield that works?  Very much so.   Doc

I had posted early Monday I had called to order one.  The sales guy was clueless asked me if I wanted Euro, Dome, or Sport.  Also said almost 300 for Dark tint plus shipping on the 14" shield.  He could not answer any questions.

Well, I called back Tuesday after noon and specifically asked to talk to Joe.  What a differance, what a great person to talk to who was extremely helpful.  I bet he talked with me for 30 minutes making sure I ordered the correct shield for me.  He did have to transfer me to sales so I could order the shield.  However he made sure the sales person knew the cost, and the correct shield.

The price was what was posted on one of these threads with the word document attachment.

Right at 257 with shipping for the 14" dark dome.

There are 29 orders ahead of me.  Joe feels I should have it in two weeks but not longer than three weeks...

For $300 for a piece of plastic it better be soft, pliable and wrapped around a girl.

Dood in a little plastic wrap. Really, really bad thing. Lots and lots and lots of plastic, might be ok.

I ordered one a few weeks ago.  The estimated price was between 250 and 300.  I ordered a 15" euro.  Well, last week CB called me and told me that mine would ship Monday.  He asked a couple questions and inquired about my height.  So he then adjusted the order and said it will be made and shipped Monday and I should have it today.  So we will see when I get home.  Cost for the 13" is $249.  Thats about $50 more than the KW and $70 more than Clearview.  1 dinner night out at a half way decent restuarant.
Yep, we are paying for the R&D.  Its not like there are 20k Roadglides out there.  These are being specifically made for the 09 SERG.  How many of the 3000 owners will pick one of these up.  You want one or you don't.  Pay or don't pay but.....quityerbitchin!

with talking to Joe at CB and others and comparing my fairing with stock SERGs the two fairings are different. I was told that all 2010's will have the new fairing. I  was able to put a windshield from a stock RG on my SERG and it fit but looked like chit. I was so dissatisfied that I contacted CB to see if they would make me a custom shield since thier main business is making custom aircraft windshields. I was not aware at the time that they even made bike windshields. After talking to Joe I found that he was interested in seeing my bike so he could figure out the difference between the stock RG and the SERG. After seeing the difference he then realized what all the comotion was about. He offer to make me a free windshield if i would leave my bike in his warehouse for a week or two so that he could make a new mold and get the propper fit. He told me they would make a few different styles and that I could have 1 of each free of charge for letting them use my bike. Since then they have decided to make only 1 style for this bike. you can get it in different tints and different heights. Joe still comes to my workplace removing and replacing windshields trying to improve the fit. He will be here again either this afternoon or first thing tomorrow morning. I do not like being without my bike of haveing people constanty taking a screwdriver to it however I want a windshield that fits and works well. I would have much preffered to pay $300 and put the darn thing on and be done with it rather than all this inconvienience. But for my personal satisfaction and for the good of the SERG family Im doing it.

On a separate note If you order your windshield from CB and its too tall they can cut it down (I dont think they will charge for that ) but if you order too short your SOL.

Hehe , that`s a good statement ,
Should there really be a SERG-driver that is rally satisfied with the just second best- i don`t know , but i don`t believe , because then he would not have a SERG .
And when there will be a better shield tomorrow then i will be thinking about again .

"Pay or don't pay but.....quityerbitchin!"

That's what this board is about.  It's a forum for us to share ideas, what works, what doesn't and to sound off (BITCHIN) if we think some product is over priced.  As it turns out I called CB back today several times until I could speak directly to Joe.  He informed me that some of the sales reps there were giving incorrect pricing of $300+ to customers.  They even charged some that exorbant rate.  The real pricing is from $230 to $270 depending on size and tint.  He also told me that they won't be offering the EURO for our bikes because it looks like A$$.  He said he'd contacted those overcharged and adjusted their purchase price.  He also said he had to fight with upper management on the pricing since they wanted to charge more...like $300+....

We talked for an hour about their process of machining different angles into the bottom of the windshield to get the desired contour, the new steeper angle to the leading edge and about the installation kit he's come up with to alleviate the rubber inserts from falling through the fairing.  I'm now confident that CB is putting out a product that is fairly priced and of great quality.  Without this board, I couldn't have come to this conclusion and I doubt CB would have received sufficient feedback to produce the new design.

I also supplied him with the seal part number posted on the sister thread and he's buying one so they can try the shield out on a standard Road Glide which I'm 100% positive will fit perfect...then these shields can be sold to ALL 98-present FLT owners.

I ordered a 14" dark grey for $255+S/H

If this forum was just for flowery reports and opinions, it'd be worthless...don't like it?...go surf the HONDA forum

Just got off the phone with Joe, The dome is the only windshield they plan on makeing because the eoro looked terrible on this bike. He will make it for you if you really want it but they wont take it back if you dont like it.

Just anothe note on the $300 or so price tag. The optical quality of this windshield is excelent. there is no distortion like with the KW windshield and you can remove scratches real easy, and if you buy the lt tint its FAA approved so you can really fly down the road!

I read all the reviews on the KW, and they were not good.  What I have read about this Cee Bailey is good, and it still looks good.  Just under 70 more than the KW....or less then one Friday night out...

I ordered the Cee Baily, as I can easily blow more than the differenace in a Friday night at the marina bar....

With the sale this week end, I purchased the 14 inch dark gray for $196.00. Now thats not near the $300 and a great bargain for the best wind shield on the market. Now is the time to buy, save 20% during the week end sale! Call Joe; Cee Bailey's @800-788-0618.

I can understand your hesitation on spending that kinda dough on a shield...I felt exactly the same way about my Clearview shield for my older RG but decided to give it a try based on the excellent reviews on various forums.  Well, after I got it I discovered it was the best thing I EVER bought for my Harley.  Not only was the fit, finish and build quality first rate, but it was the first shield I ever had on ANY bike that really worked!  I have had a lot of shields over the last 30 years of riding on a lot of different bikes.  This literally blew them all away-I still have a pile of old shields in my garage if anyone is interested.

I am not kidding, my first time out with the CV shield was kinda surreal...there was NO BUFFETING.   I couldn't believe it-it was a very strange feeling.  I also discovered I could hear my stereo for the first time at ANY speed-hell, that alone would have made it worth it as I love to crank tunes while blasting down the highway.  Needless to say I am completely sold.

I'm not sure how they work on the newer style bikes, but on my '98 and '01 Road Glides Clearview is the absolute bomb.  I went with the LARGE GT (2" taller than stock, 2" wider, recurve, and vent.)  I know some of you don't like the way the vents look, but I was concerned about function, not posing for pictures.  Besides, I don't think it looks bad on my bike at all and even rather like it.  I goes well with the high tech RG look.  Anyway, the best way I can describe how the vent works is like when you are driving in your car with all the windows closed except for one that is opened slightly-huge buffeting sound inside your car.  Crack open another window and suddenly it smooths out instantly.  I no longer get off my bike with all my hair (what little is left) blown forward.  I also outlast ALL my buddies on road trips!  I would buy another if needed in a heartbeat.

veech, I know what you're saying and couldn't agree more on the CV shield.  It was the first thing bought for the SERG even before I took delivery...GREAT SHIELD...kind of wished I'd got the vent but wasn't sure how well it worked.

I've since bought a CB 14" Dark as the price was misstated at $300...more like $250 and they just did a sale.  I like the looks of the CB best...let's just see if it performs as good as it looks :2vrolijk_21:

I installed a 14" light grey last weekend and really like the way it looks, it flows with the lines of the fairing perfectly. The buffeting on top of the helmet is gone, but it has the same amount of wind noise around the ears. It's a keeper. :2vrolijk_21:

I've got my 8" KW on at the moment and it is only slightly better than stock... and I mean very slightly...

grandpadoc,  It looks like you have the "old" style 14" shield that is laid back more than the "New & Improved" version advertised for the 09SERG's.  I'll bet if you order the SERG gasket and the 09 shield you'll see even better results as far as wind noise.

Ya, you 09 guys have all the fun !!  I guess I'm still stoked on the looks, maybe when that wears off I'll try the newer one. I might pull the trigger on a 2010 and do it then if they come out with a complete touring version. ::)  Doc

If I had to guess I'd say yes. If I had to wish it would be a complete touring bike with lowers, tourpack, CB 15'' shield, shark fin end caps, and a liquid cooled high hp/torque engine.  You know Willie lurks on this site every day don't you.  ;D  Doc

Once you go RG ya can't go back. The dealers will create the demand. The one I saw this weekend at our local dealer sold for 39,250 !! If the motor goes wet the frame mounted fairing is the only one that makes sense. Doc

Once you go RG ya can't go back. The dealers will create the demand. The one I saw this weekend at our local dealer sold for 39,250 !! If the motor goes wet the frame mounted fairing is the only one that makes sense. Doc

That is the essence , yeah .

I think they will have a second year on the CVO RG and have the SE StreetGlide instead of the SE Ultra.  Also the SE Springer will go away.  There's too many still sitting on the floor.  Maybe a SE Deluxe?

I'll bet the SE FatBob goes away, too, in 2010. Every dealer in the area has at least one on the floor. Some have two. Most of them are yellow...

If anyone wants a Cee Bailys 14" Dark Tint or a 15" Lt, Tint, Demo Shield I will both for $150.00  plus shipping and you will have to order the install hardware from Cee Bailys.  These shields are not damaged in any way but the shape is off on the tops and sides    These are the shields in pics.  Doc

Guess the two shields you mentioned in reply#20 didn't get trashed after all  :nixweiss:

FWIW, Cee B. has had a couple of sales in the last month. Perhaps they'll have another before too long.

I think it would be better to trash them , if they are really not symetric and badly shaped . Who would have such a shield on a 32k bike ? This should be a poor man ( but with a 32 k scooter , wonder how this work )  ::)

I will say they are great.

I was quoted 258 with shipping.

Then they shipped it and billed me for 218. :coolblue:

Very honest and good of them.  Their service was very good.

It was easy to put on the bike and fit very good.

I have not had a chance to ride it with the shield yet, and will not get to until Saturday as I am in Houton since Sunday.

Installed the 14" Dark and test drove the bike.  It's just okay with the 3/4 helmet and with the full helmet I get pretty good wind noise and vibration of the face shield where if I'd been wearing sunglasses they'd have been blurring my vision pretty bad.  I think the height and design of the helmet had play in this.  The top of the shield vibrates at 50-65 bretty bad as well.  Looks great but doesn't compare with the Clearview Stock height which is superior in function.  I'm 5' 11".

Thanks for the update I just installed a 14 in its two cold here to test it, but the configeration is really similar to the Klock werks that I hated, I sold my Clear view when I ordered the Cee Baileys. The Clearview was great, I wasn't happy with the look maybe I will have to forgo form for function, if mine vibrates at road speeds its history.

Not to defend the Cee Bailys shield at all, but Mine is rock solid with no vibrations at all at any speed, I am 6.1" and wear a half helmet and sunglasses only and have no buffetting. I wonder if its a windshield hieght thing?  I have found my last windshield with the 14" Dark tint Cee Bailys shield, but I do like to look over a sheild rather than thru it. I do not get the same effects as you are experincing.    Doc

Just a suggestion but when I recieved my 09 SERG from the dealer my fairing was vibrating pretty badly. I got home and seen the the lower fairing brackets were not lined up in center of fairing, I losened the lower chrome fairing bracket bolts and started the bike while upright off the stand and the brackets centerd themshelfs, I them tighted the bolts and the fairing has not vibrated since.  Doc

Doc, everything looks copostetic on the fairing...I'm home for lunch so I'll give it a try on the way back to work with the 3/4 helmet and see how things go.  I did have to tighten a couple screws on the windshield...seemed looser than the others.  I'll let you know how things went after work...can't log-on at work but can read.  Dan

UPDATE: Tightening down the screws did the trick on the vibrating windscreen.  I get less buffeting with the 3/4 "Bug" helmet so that has a lot to do with it.  There is still more wind noise than the CV but the tradeoff in looks for a little functionality I think (for me) is worth it.  The CV will be my touring shield while the CB will be my summer/around town shield.  They are both great shields in their own right...time for :drink: :drink: :drink:

Let me say the fit is perfect. Finally some one had the smarts to use the stock CVO gasket!  The special series of plastic spacing washers work perfectly. Even a better fit than stock. Optical quality is also perfect. I have a picture of the KW and the CB side by side and you can see the optical difference. I have to say the KW was only a bit short on performance and did look good. I'm sure the CB 14 inch dark will raise the bar to a less turbulent ride and looks even better. Thanks Joe and every one at Cee Bailey's, Great product!  :2vrolijk_21:

I know this has been said before, but that KW looks just like the CB 14" I just received. It's the old model for the standard RG and they have to be the same, distortions and all.  Doc (other)

, as did the fuffeting.
Can't have any fuffeting, sorry Dave, had to
Got mine finished installed last nite, Got to say it looks good, but wasn't any easier to install than the KW. the gasket fit on the KW just nice as it does on CB. now my KW came off the shelf in sept and Joe says it was not for my bike, oh well. I did get the chrome trim Piece on with a bit of persuasion. actually reshaped it
Now I still have to ride this thing to figure if it is road worthy but now there talking snow on SAT.
So far, good thing I got it at the old price.

LarryB - how did you "persuade" the chrome trim to fit?  I assume you have the 09 SERG with CB windshield.
Thanks in advance.. :confused5:

Hey Chief - I've ordered an 09 SERG / Silver Ghost and I'll take possession in June if everything goes well.  After reading all these posts regarding CB shields I'm sold on buying a the dark tint, however, I want to ensure I order the right size for me. Your post stated you ordered the 14", how tall are you?  I'm 5'10" with a 29" inseam and the literature from CB suggests I order a 13" shield.  Most of the posts I'm reading have riders ordering the 14" shield; certainly not all the other riders are between 5'11" and 6'1".  Any recommendations?

Rob, You'll probably be better off with the 13".  At 5' 10" you'd be looking at the edge or close to it...enough to bother you, especially with the dark tint.  You can tolerate a closer (higher) shield better if it's a lightly smoked or clear one but the darker it is the more you're aware of it.

Thanks for your service,
Dan

I also think that a 13" would better fit you .

Dan & Highjagger,  thanks for your inputs.  I spoke with Joe at CB last week and he confirmed what you two said - get the 13" so I ordered it.  Talked with Tony his sales rep and asked if I could still get the 20% off.  He said that promotion was no longer running but if I ordered it right then (about 5 minutes before closing) he'd sell it to me for $200.00 flat;  needless to say I ordered it.  I have no idea when it will arrive but I have until June as my Silver Ghost doesn't arrive until then.  I just hope I don't run into the problems discussed earlier today regarding shield height differences between the left and right side.

Thanks again.

Is the 14" cb windshield measured from the bottom or from the center screw?
