2012 110
« on: July 18, 2013, 08:01:46 PM »

I have a 2012 110 with 37,000 miles. The weather has been in the 90's and going down the road at 2100 rpm 60 MPH in 6th gear every once in a while I get a skip in the motor. I have also had a few times when she is cold that it took two times to start. Any thoughts?

Have you checked for any codes?

Possibly a plug or plug wire, but I'd check for codes first...   :2vrolijk_21:

If that was a carbed machine, I'd be looking to bump up the pilot jet, for starters.

I never ride mine below 3,000 rpm---ever (maybe 1st, 2nd gear taking off,) typically these bikes run better with a "fire built up under them," none of the CVO'S I have owned liked to be lugged, maybe try that approach. I have ridden with other CVO owners and most of them don't run @ low RPM'S either---just a thought!

When I bought my FLHTCUSE8 the dealership told me to never run it below 2500 while under a load.  I use 6th gear at about 70 and depending on the terrain that is pushing it.

I'll change the plugs and run up the RPM. The only thing is that this never was happening until the past week.

See my post Some Trouble on the Road. This is exactly what mine did at first. Turned out to be failed lifter.

Muddypaws I hope this is not your problem but I am very suspicious from your description that it may well be.  BTW mine never threw any DTCs.  If had gotten bad enough most likely it would throw a code of no combustion in the affected cylinder.

I hesitate to say it but at 37K it might be time to take a peek, if the 110's history with lifter issues is any guide.. I know mine went bad at far fewer miles than 37K

I would also look at fuel pressure.  A fuel filter is cheap and easy fix.

Quite a bit when they come apart and trash your motor.   :'(

If you do it yourself it's about $400 for S&S lifters and adjustable pushrods and of course the lifter block gaskets. Dealer cost will of course be more since they will probably charge a few hours labor.

Now again if the bike is still under warranty and making noises on the right side of the engine it should be covered under warranty once the source of the noise is found....

After starting this post and 600 more miles the missing has gone away. I have no excessive lifter noise. I did on the 2009 and the dealer replaced them. I know the thought that when you have a noise and it goes away that's not always a good thing....

have you changed the plugs and altered riding habits by cruising at a higher RPM? Or did the symptoms just go away on their own? Perhaps you area gas stations got some bad fuel.   :nixweiss:

Missing is back. Here is what I noticed after changing the plugs. About every 300-400 miles i get a miss. At idle every once in a while I get a 50 rpm drop. I have the Fullsac header pipe and baffles with their tuner. I have gone 37,000 miles without a problem and now this comes up 8 weeks before the warranty expires. I know they will try and blame Fullsac and the tuner. I have a call into Steve to see what he thinks.Thoughts.

And no misfire codes?  For the minimal investment, I'd at least change plugs and plug wires....

No idea what the problem is... but I do NOT trust H-D lifters at all. There are MANY stories about stock lifters failing ad ruining the bottom end.

I run Headquarters Black Ops lifters. They are much quieter than H-D lifters, and I've never had a problem with them.

Bike is still missing. Today it missed for about 15 times in one mile. Then I drove 80 miles without one miss. I can't see it being a fuel filter or fuel problem as I have gone through at least 10 fill ups.
With it being not that frequent could it be plug wires. People are talking about lifters but would bad lifters cause the problem all the time? I had bad lifters in my 2009 and had them replace but they did not make the motor miss.

Then I'd replace the crank sensor.  It's another mildly inexpensive component that's easy to change that could cause your symptoms.  And it typically doesn't throw a code.  My best friend/riding buddy experienced symptoms similar to your a year or so ago, and a crank sensor fixed it for him....

(and in the back of my mind, I seriously hope you're not going thru what Jerry (Ultrafx) warned you about earlier in this thread..)

unfortunately that is in the front of my mind...Honestly I would examine the lifters - or have the dealer investigate further since the bike should still be under warranty.

Short answer, no, lifter(s) going bad but not completly destructed can cause intermittent skip/miss.  That is exactly how my motor started acting up - one little skip and none for well over 100 miles then it got more frequent and by the second day I started hearing a knocking noise.  Now I was on a road trip and rode several hundred miles thinking I might have bad gas, bad spark plug, bad sensor(s), basically all the things that you have covered.

I believe you said your bike was about to go out of warranty.  I sure would get it to a dealer and have the cam chest inspected even if it were on my own dime just for peace of mind.  And like sadunbar does, just replace the lifters even if they are not bad.

Bad 02 sensors could cause your tune to go bad by sending bad information to your bike's brain, causing your bike to run poorly (and likely cause your fuel mileage to change drastically),  but I doubt the end result would be an intermittent miss.

I missed this part of your post the first time....yes....it could be plug wires...   :2vrolijk_21:

If it were mine I'd bite the bullet and ride over to the dealer and get this documented and on the record (written up on a work order and a copy in my pocket).  The bike is under warranty, and if the dealership is a good one they may actually do some diagnostics and find the problem.  But even if they don't, once you've got it documented that you reported the problem to them while the bike is in warranty, they can't legally blow you off if something fails shortly after the warranty expires.

When I had issues with my lifters this past spring my dealer was quite familiar with the problem with most of the 110's developing an appetite for eating cam chest parts. You never know, the tech might be able to narrow it down by the symptoms you describe.

And like Jerry said, now you have the problem documented - before the expiration of the warranty.

From what you've described, if it was mine, I'd be looking at every electrical connection that has anything to do with ignition and fueling. Check the connection especially on the throttle body, a slightly loose fit will cause intermittent problems from the vibration. Check the connections at the ESm and Tssm for corrosion and or bent pins.
Take it to the dealer, let him check these things, it on their plate (warranty) to resolve this. OH, and yes at 37K, I'd be taking off the cam cover for a quick look see!   fwiw  twinotter

I'm also thinking electrical as I have no abnormal noise buy the push rods and lifters. I checked all the connections and see no problem so i'll wait until Wednesday to see what dealer finds.

Just got back from the dealer and after several hours they found the connector under the fuel tank with a broken wire. The bike crapped out right at their door step.  I'm happy again....

Did they share what component the wire was connected to?

The harness to the motor. It was about to rain so I did not wait for paperwork. They will send it in the mail.

Well the bike was fixed (I thought) and last night on the way home she crapped out. The dealer is on the way to get her. I so glad it happened 5 miles from the house and not on my trip to Tennessee last week. Made it to just under 44,000 miles. My goal to to ride a Harley for 50,000 miles without it breaking. I must be dreaming....

That stinks. Did it go out with the same symptoms you were experiencing before? Might be more going on than a broken wire.

I stopped at a light and I noticed a miss. I then drove a few feet and the bike was like riding a bucking horse. My guess it's wire in the same connector under the tank. I hope to know more tomorrow. I ride a lot (25,000 miles a year) and have not had much luck keeping a bike out of the shop. Might be time to look at another bike.

You have to dump like $6000.00 in to the engine to get all the bugs out as soon as you buy the 110. The you will be good to go for 100,000 miles trouble free.

Pipe $1000  Head work $1000   Crank $1000  Pistons $500  Oil pump, Cam plate, Lifters, Push rods, Cams $ 2000 Then you add gaskets, labor, Dyno, Oil changes and you are up there with a total rebuild. And yes, you need all of these things and even more.  :bananarock:

Before I dumped $6k in a 110, I would call S&S (124)

Ever thought about ESP? It has been $$ well spent for me.

Hi Folks, any updates on this topic? Really interested as I have a FLHTCUSE7 bought 1 year old with 768 miles on the clock!! Guess the first owner didn't like it. Thing is I see lots of report on bad lifter etc and my warranty runs out August 2014. I've already logged the noisy top end between 2000 and 2500 rpm with the HD dealer.

Cheers
