The last page of the dealers "Trouble shooting handbook".

"When all else fails, Replace engine".

Then what?

Steve
And I thought parts changers were bad, now we have component changers.

Chit...as a consumer I would always take a new engine.

Shame he won't get to keep the old one. Now that would have been some fun! :)

I am not feeling welcome!

I went through this with my 06 street glide and ended up putting new pipes and tuning it. After that the bike ran great, i put over 30k miles on it and then bought this.....I really find it hard to believe that nobody from the moco see's this problem...or do they and just look at as though it is up to us to make it run properly?

NOW you are starting to get the picture.  That has been the MoCo's answer to all the various driveability issues they've created over the years when they were forced to meet emission regs.  In the carb days, everyone just drilled out the idle mixture plug and adjusted the idle mixture, then bought a #45 pilot jet and installed that.  Then EFI came along and folks had to buy Power Commanders and get the bikes tuned.  Harley quickly jumped on that additional profit opportunity by introducing the "Race Use Only" SERT that they sold to anyone and everyone, no actual racing required.  Now they've created a monster by increasing engine displacement (more heat), adding a catalytic converter (much more heat), and doing absolutely nothing to provide additional cooling.  The rear cylinders run hot, which lead to the infamous gasket failures and leaks, and that also creates the detonation (pinging) and poor performance issues.  The hotter it gets, the hotter it gets, if you know what I mean.

H-D doesn't seem to know how to produce an engine that meets current emission regulations without creating these issues.  Worse, they don't seem to give a chit either.  They have gotten away with making the customers pay extra (the "Harley Tax") to make the bikes run properly and with halfway decent performance for more than a decade.  Air cleaner, mufflers, and a tune has become almost standard equipment, although at the customers expense.

It's all well and good for us to bitch about it, but the facts are the MoCo doesn't seem to care, and they don't seem to know how to fix it (legally) anyway.  So after being thoroughly pizzed and after venting, you need to do like all the rest of us have done, fix it yourself.  I would suggest, however, that you may want to take my approach and refuse to pay H-D for the fix.  Buy your parts from the aftermarket.  I personally would never consider owning a SERT, for instance.  Fortunately, there are better alternatives available from the aftermarket like the TTS MasterTune.

I completly agree, however when i brought it to them they agreed there was an issue with my engine and since now after 2 weeks they are putting a new one in....most likely becasue they cant find the cause. So i have gone along with it and once it is done and the dealer says ok, then i will do as everyone has.

My only difference is i have decided to go with the V&H monster ovals and head pipe as i had on my street glide, the wife agreed that they were the easiest on her ears. The air box i am not sure what to do as i would like to retain the stock cover, any suggestions? Aside from that i know my dealer is familiar with the sert and they did the tune on my prior bike, i would like to stay with what they are accomstomed too.

If i do the pipes myslef and install the pc then i have to assume i have the correct map as i dont know of any tuners in my area that i would trust more than my dealer. Keep in mind this is not my local dealer, i drive about 40 miles to go to this one.....my local dealer realy sucks!!!

nice numbers for just an exhaust and tune, are you running the stock air filter?

Does the bike run that much better than stock?

Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner.

Yes, I originally put the Fuel Pack on.....never again!
Pinged so bad the bike wanted to shut down.

My average oil temp running (as far as the gauge I installed) 240ish

Runs strong and a lot smoother through the gears.

I am happy with this set up.

thanks this is good to hear.

Honestly my last bike i got a little carried away with and must have put about 10k into it between engine anc chrome. I told myself i wasnt going to do it again with this one, thats why i had left the stock pipes on. I dont want to core the cat incase i need to put it back on for the state inspection, there is talk about crazy things in ma and if calif does it then we will follow.

My 2009 SERG was running very hot (up to 306 degrees, according to the stupid HD LCD oil dipstick) I already got rid of my Cat (bought a 96" head pipes and Reinhart slip on's) Super Tune and Heavy Breather.

I then bought a D&D 2 into 1 setup and a re-tune. What my dealer noticed was a problem with my exhaust valve, it would stick and not close completely. He found a slightly bent guide (I think or maybe valve) he replaced the guide and the valve (under Warranty) it runs much cooler no more than 280 degrees on hot days after a long run. The dealer told be that the engine cooling system (rear cylinder cut off) starts at 278 degrees, I do notice at the end of my ride I usually get stuck at a red light sometimes for more than 1 cycle. I can feel the irregular "heart beat" of the engine, then I am home and check the temp and found 280 at the highest. on a shorter ride 30 minutes or so to work Temp is 230 degrees.

On the plus side my Dyno Numbers are 90.7 HP and 111.7 TQ AFR 13.1 (I think)
