S&S cams
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:06:50 PM »

Hi everybody, new here and looking for info/opinions
want to put gear drive for dependability  unsure after reading all the posts about which cams are "best"
26k on the clock and a little lifter noise so while changing the lifters might as well change the cams too
want to get a bit more with out doing any head work
going with the feuling lifters and pump.   considering S&S for cams and plate/kit
taking out the HD race tuner and replacing with Zippers
06 SEUC
taking a few weeks and going Boston to Montana to Sturgis to Boston and want no engine issues when we get to the big hills.
I've read the Zippers self adjusts and my dealer parts guy swears by it

If you want some good bolt in cams for a CVO 103ci motor go with Zippers 575 or Freedoms FCC 13 14 (I think that's the correct number for them now). Here are some threads to look at concerning the Freedom (Yuill Brothers) and Zippers Cams......

REDSHIFT 575 CAMS & OTHER PRETTY PARTS (several dyno runs in this thread)

FCC14 Cams 103 Dyno

Freedom Cycles "Secret" FCC9 Cam Dyno (earlier version of the FCC14)

Freedom Cycles CVO 103 Cams

No head work required with either of those.

Got it.....

1st  buy the tuner that your your guy recommends, he will be the one to set up and you kind of let him off the hook if you give him something to work with he did not suggest. Also going against his suggestions does not show much confidence.

stock Harley lifters should do the job, do not waste the money on Fueling.

Call Bob Woods, Tman or go with off the shelf S&S cams

First and foremost is WHAT IS YOUR CRANK RUN OUT :nixweiss: anything over .002 and no gear drives

Less than .002 then  the new Harley cam plate and oil pump, no spring needed. 25283-07
                                  Freedom 14
                                  Stock Harley lifters
Leave in the SERT...save the $850
More than .002 then zippers 575 chain drive cams
Harley cam plate and oil pump 25283-07
                                  Stock lifters

I tried to post on the newbie site and the picture was too big or something I'll try again later today

thanks for the info
is it a common problem for excessive runout? ???
how difficult is the operation(check run out)
I work on cars/bikes for a living (auto body / custom paint) so I am mechanically inclined ;)
are there any links for a step by step process?
sorry 'bout all the questions but I just gotta know :2vrolijk_21:

Read the threads that Fired00d listed in his post.  You will find that the CVO103 heads aren't exactly performance heads, and if you want to leave them stock the best advice is to use a cam that was designed to work specifically with those stock heads.  That would be the Freedom cams or the Zipper's 575.  If you want to go more radical than those, I suggest you contact one of the good engine builders for a coordinated build including heads, compression, etc.
