Believe him if you must, but if that's exactly what he told you then he lied through his teeth.  It is a service contract, not an extension of the factory warranty.  If you don't want to believe me, then call H-D direct and ask them.  The name of the product is the Extended Service Plan (ESP), and if you look it up on the Harley web site you will see it listed as such.

 http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/HDFS/esp.jsp?locale=en_US

Did you receive the two part contract that you are supposed to receive when you buy the ESP?  If you did, you really should read it.  If you didn't, you need to have a little chat with your dealership.

and the difference between my factory warranty and the ESP would be..........?

ok......so while it's an ESP as you seem so desperate to convey........it covers 100% of the bike front tire to back tire (EXCATLY like the factory warranty), why in the world do you guys make such a big deal about it not being a factory warranty?  isn't the warranty a "service plan"?  perhaps you'd be on board if it were called an EWP (Extended Warranty Plan).

i mean geez......if it walks like a dog, barks like a dog it certainly CANNOT be a dog!  ::)

Some items are not fully covered and there is a deductible.  Some items NOT covered are mirrors, audio speakers and wires, belt, windshield and its mounts, exhaust system discoloration, fairing, frame, shock absorbers, spark plugs and plug wires, wheels.  Some services NOT covered include cleaning of fuel system, tune-ups, carbon removal, ignition and fuel system adjustments and some other similar items.

So, it IS different from the original factory warranty.

The ESP is not full coverage like the factory warranty as several have already stated.  And another big difference is that the moco does not call the shots.  The H-D dealer has to get the go ahead from the ESP to do the repair.  So if you get embroiled in a decision about whether or not a repair is covered you have to deal with the third party ESP administrator and their field inspectors - not the moco.  This could be bad or it could be good - just depends on the circumstances I guess.  And while I do have the ESP logic would tell me that they may not be as motivated about pleasing a customer and hoping for repeat business.  I know, I know, we all have examples where it looks like the moco is blowing us off but there are some cases where they do step up and do the right thing.

Chrome and paint?!?  You wish!!!  You didn't read my previous post....here is the facts from the ESP book:

Some items NOT covered are mirrors, audio speakers and wires, belt, windshield and its mounts, exhaust system discoloration, fairing, frame, shock absorbers, spark plugs and plug wires, wheels.  Some services NOT covered include cleaning of fuel system, tune-ups, carbon removal, ignition and fuel system adjustments and some other similar items.

So very, very true my friend.

It is an outside company but authorized under the HD brand, kinda like the fact that our bikes are made by HD with parts from China.

I think mileage is the determining factor in buying the ESP. Most bike average 3500 a year and that means less for many. But when you are at 10,000 miles or more year the ESP is a must with a Harley .  Had 3 HD and THE esp IS CHEAP COMPARED TO ALL THE REPAIRS.  The bike is maintained and ridden gentally So not sure if the bike was ridden aggressively how many times the ESP would be used. With 43000 on my 07 SERK I have saved over 3500 with the plan an truly expect to save more in the next 3 years       Billy

Its a feel good thing I suppose, if the extended Insurance Policy was the slightest bit in favor of the Buyer do you think they would push them so fiercely? They are a real cash cow for the MoCo.

The ESP is a cash cow for the MoCo and that is why a stealership pushes them so fiercley.  They know the average rider won't ever put enough miles on to ever use the ESP.  If you put a lot of miles on your bike the ESP is a very good idea.

That's not much of a testimonial to HD....but you're right.  My original warranty went out @ about 25K miles and my experience made me buy ESP.  I've never needed an ESP on ANYTHING before, including my 05 Kaw with 54K miles (only repair has been a clutch cable outside the usual tires, battery, brake pads...).  My ESP has already paid for new lifters....now at 41K miles on the HD.  But I do love the bike; best touring bike I've ever had for comfort and features.

This is a good discussion.. my dealership is pushing Service contracts from Western Service Contracts... My 08 Street Glide I never had issues, so no problems there... but I read up on Western and there are a LOT of negative reviews by those denied claim by them.

My Fatboy had HD's ESP, and I had two charging system failures and one Starter clutch failure.. all covered.

now.. for the 09 SERG I also have a Wewstern service contract, not sure if I'm going to have issues as I exceed the 2 year mark shortly.

Anyone else have issues with Western or even using them?
