Got to do what makes you warm and fuzzy.  My intention was to point out the resolution of the problem for those who can't live with the sleepy non-performance of the 110's for 2 years or more.
I believe there have been 5 blown 110's (that have been reported on here) that we know of. I have a feeling, that with the lean EPA condition and adding the lowers, thus restricting airflow to the rear jug, is the culprit.  (Just my observation, as so far I think it's just been SEUCs)  I'm confident with the mods that I did, that unless the dealership on the road that I may have to go to is a real a$$hole, that my warranty will be honored.  My dealer told me that the mods I did were standard mods that everyone does and that most, he couldn't vouch for all, dealers won't have a problem honoring the warranty.  Given that, plus the guarantee I got from my dealership, that as long as they did the mods, they will honor the warranty, I got the 7 year extended contract.   (I also took this to mean stay external of the engine though).  I'm thinking of adding some cams later in life, so maybe I'll talk to the dealer and see if I do, will they still cover my warranty.  That may be stretching it though :(
Cheers 8),

For what it worth I repeat what I herd at a dealer today, a owner called in to complain thathis new CVO Ultra rear cylinder  was runing at close to 400 degrees and the exhaust was cherry red, he wanted the moco to pay for his upgrades on his motor to cool it down.... they said noway.... what you think?

Ain't no way the MOCO is going to pay for him to get pipes and a tune...they'd rather just let it burn up and replace the engine.

Terry,
You're absolutely right.  The MoCo will never do that, but not because they'd rather see the engines blow up and replace them, but for legal reasons.  If they authorized modifying the motorcycles with new exhausts, even though we all know that would make the engine run cooler and make it run right, they would be subject to huge fines from the EPA for okaying them to be non-EPA compliant.  They can claim ignorance when the end user changes out the exhaust because they can claim that the bike was EPA compliant when it left the factory and that they have no control over what the eventual owner does.  From a more personal perspective and not taking the legal ramifications for the MoCo in to consideration, I feel that if they okay the dealers to change out whatever it takes to get the engine running properly, that would be admitting that there is a serious problem with the engine.  So rather than admit that, they will onesy-twosy replace the engines which doesn't look so bad then coming out with a "recall" to admit they messed up.  Just my opinion.

You're right about the exhaust mods, and the MoCo being "non compliant" with the E.P.A. standards....but what the company SHOULD offer at the very least, is some kind of cooling aid, (fan &oil cooler) then a quick upgrade on the computer, and roll it out the door with E.P.A. Baffles, and act like "SHULZ"    I KNOW  NUUUUTTTIIINNGGGG !  ;D  I always say there is power in numbers...we have a lot of members here, we're all concerned...or atleast the new 110" crew is, and we're ALL friends with an outstanding devotion tho this MoCo!!!! 8)  ARE WE O.K. ??    :P     If the problem continues....SOMETHING has to be done!  I know I'd rather not have the down time for a new motor swap, and "break-in period" :-\    Show me the 110" Factory issued cooling system please !!!   :nixweiss:

Jack,
Don't hold you're breath waiting for a factory cooling system.  The MoCo knows just as well as we do, that the first thing that is done to virtually every Harley sold is the factory exhaust is replaced.  So I don't think they are too concerned.   I changed out my exhaust before I even picked up the bike from the dealership and I didn't know about the heat problem when I did that.  But I'm glad that I did, because I've not had that problem.  It's a shame that it is up to us to fix the problem, but the MoCo is meeting EPA requirements so they are meeting their requirements at our expense.   I guess the only alternative is to go to all liquid-cooled engines.

Red I don't know that they would admit anything about the heat in the engines. We all know and the Moco knows that these bikes run extremely hot. When I picked up Punkin up from the dealer I could not believe how hot the ride home was. I was on the phone Monday morning ordering the necessary parts. I have been in love ever since.

The Mo co is doing what they can with what they have to work with. The EPA has a tight rein on all of the manufactures. So really the blame is on the Government who is trying to keep our air a little cleaner. One thing the Mo co does know is that most of us that buy a new bike modify the air cleaner, exhaust and A/F mixture almost right away. They gave us a decent motor to work with. So instead of all of the Bitching that is going on about the CVO motors. The new owners should do something about it. The few changes that will have to be made will wake up any of the monster motors and make them live a little longer. So IMHO make the changes and everyone will be happy.

Dawg,
You hit my point exactly.  The MoCo knows that most of us are going to change out the exhaust and AC as one of the first things we do.  They have to do what they do to meet the EPA.  If they didn't, they'd be out of business.  (Their water-cooled market isn't mature enough yet).  Like you said, we do what we have to do.  I never had the heat problem, cuz I swapped everything out right away.  And you betcha, I'm happy. ;D

My bike has been running like a champ since I changed the exhaust and added the SERT about a week after buying the bike BUT it was still running really hot. I have since upgraded to a Thundermax ECM with Autotune module which allows me to keep the AFR exactly where I want it at all times. The only thing that worries me is I am SOL if there are any engine problems that occur during the warranty period. I have about 2k miles on the 110 motor now and she is running great. Hopefully, there won't be any major problems with it  :nixweiss:

Maybe at least MOCO could opt for a fan fit out to cool these beasts. :nixweiss:

You can put a Parade Fan on it, but it's pretty OOGLY.

If you get the A/F down to something more reasonable....<14/1... you will have no worries with things getting hot enough to start damaging stuff.  The big motors put off a lot of heat by nature, but if it's stock, it's dangerously hot for the motor.

Hey that's great news! Did they put the engine mods yet or are you still running it stock? Hopefully they'll set the bike up for you the way it belongs this time so you should never have to worry about that again! I'm glad it worked out for you! Hoist! 8)
