Fuel Gauge Problem
« on: January 04, 2007, 08:21:17 PM »

I have a '07 SE Dyna that has the hidden LED fuel guage in the tank console.....It's been measuring erraticlly the last couple of weeks.....then today after I fill up the LED has one dot showing and the Low Fuel light is on with the tank completely full.

Anybody else have this happen or have any ideas?

The most likely source of the problem is the sending unit in the tank, perhaps the float sticking or being hung up on the internal fuel line.

My bike was plagued with bad gas gauge.  I had repaired five different times.  Never worked.  I am told that if you overfill the tank, as Jerry said, the float can get stuck at the top.  Get it repaired and then don't ever over fill.  It is a real pain in the butt repair. The mechanic has to hand pump out all the gas, measuring it and watching the gauge as he refills it.  Removes the gas and replaces again.  Imagine handling gas and doing the job.  I have had mine work since the last repair.   ;)

Same here.....my needle stays on "full" until I get to about 100 miles and then you can actually watch it drop !  [smiley=drink.gif]
Not a big enough issue for me to hassle with as I too rely on the odometer.

Bikes never used to have fuel gages. Odometer and looking inside tells you how much is there. It works pretty good that way. Count on that silly gage and we'll be getting you gas on the side of the road! ;) Hoist!  8-)

I hear what you're saying Hoist, but geez, for what we pay for these bikes, I don't think its too much to expect them to be able to get a simple potentiometer to work correctly. Just because we used to pull over and "slosh" the tanks 20 years ago, doesn't mean that's the way we should have to do it now.

I think its totally inexcusable to have such a simple, yet important, piece of instrumentation to be so unreliable.

Now, they have proven that they know how to do it, because the gauge on my 99 carb'd FLHTC is dead nuts on, while my buddy's 01 FLHTCUI was the same crap you're speaking of now.

Cheers,

Chief

I agree Chief, but with so many issues to deal with unfortunately, you learn to worry about the important ones. Blown engines are of more concern to me than fuel gages. I'm not belittling those who like their instrumentation, I'm just used to not having much or any. ;) Hoist!  8-)

Well, it's not like the number of blown engines comes anywhere near the number of useless fuel guages, and its not like the 07's are the first model year to experience exponential fuel needle movements.

I just think that we as a group of Harley owners are to easily placated with a dealer's response of "They all do it" when we bring up an issue whether it be the lousy fuel gauges, fogging instruments, broken inner fairing brackets etc.

If we continue to accept poor quality, especially on the little stuff, I guess we'll have to get more accustomed to getting poor quality, which leads to stuff like blown engines.

I just don't see the difference between a useless Air Temp gauge, unreliable fuel gauge and a blown engine. They all are direct consequences of poor quality.

But then again, it's a Harley. They all do it.

Cheers,

Chief

Yeah, I don't count on the gauge to tell me how much gas I have......truthfully I don't care how accurate it is.....the thing is that the tank is completely full and I have a low fuel light on staring me in the face!!!

Is the low fuel light tied into the same sending unit? If so, then it's only as good as the gage. I'm asking. I don't know the answer. ;) Hoist!  8-)

My memory sucks and sooner or later I'll just flat forget to get out my dip pole and check the tank, you'll find my dumb ass on the side of the road empty.

Even though I have a bad memory I also still do recall that when bikes didn't have a fuel gauge they didn't have fuel injection either, or electronic ignition or or or but what they did have was a reserve ::)

PS: They didn't have a freakin' two year warranty either.......see it was a simpler time then and there was a lot less to concern yourself about other than riding.

Only once in thirty plus years, coil wilre vibrated off at the connector crimp to the terminal.  Bit of giggly wiggly with the wires located the problem and we fixed it on the spot and fired her back up.

That was a 76 FLH I bought new and sold after 9 years, missed buying it back by one week three years later.  Still kicking myself.

Ah memories.  It was an AMF but really never had any issues with it.
