Question on Amp and Speaker Upgrade for '14 CVO Limited
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:51:58 AM »

How easy would it be to swap the stock Boom amp/speakers on a CVO Limited?

I'd like to swap out the tour pack speakers (what size) and the 6.5" fairing speakers along with a new amp.

I've had cars with new sound systems but not familiar with how the Harley is wired (proprietary?).  Will I need to flash the stock radio since it already runs a separate amp?

I was hoping it would be as easy and literally just swapping the speakers and wiring a new amp in place of the stocker.

Try to go with this amp and some Focal speakers:  http://www.crutchfield.com/p_575PBR3004/Rockford-Fosgate-PBR300X4.html?tp=35782

BTW, this is a good place to get good audio gear: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/car-audio-classifieds/

I would not get that amp as it is only rated for 75w/channel RMS which is kind of low to drive a range of good speakers especially if they are 4 ohm speakers. You might want to consider the Rockford Fosgate T400x4ad amp which is rated at 150 w/channel. For audio information I'd recommend the Audio section of HD Forums where there are a number of installers that can answer your specific question.

I've been running dual 300x4 amps for several years now and great amp. The power required to drive a speaker at any given SPL has nothing to do with the impedance of the speaker (4 ohm, etc), but the sensitivity of the speaker.

What model Focal are you looking at?

I've not seen the wiring diagrams for the new head units but in general it should be pretty straight-forward with the wiring diagrams in hand.

Hope this helps

Anyone know what the output is on the Boom Amp on the '14 and '15 CVO's?  I'm thinking of just swapping out the stock speakers with some aftermarkets.  Seems like a lot of people are having major problems trying to go with aftermarket amps.

That is plenty of juice for most speakers.

The output will drop to 40-50 watts per channel with 4ohm speakers. There are not many aftermarket 2 ohm speakers out there. Since the amp is not rated (published specs) with a 4 ohm load it's really hard to say what the output will be. The 40-50 watts is just an educated guess.

You can drink the J&M koolaide but other than that I think the higher end Focals are the only 2 ohm choice that I know of.

Biketronics has a really nice set of HATs that they built custom plates for specifically to mount in the '14 and up fairings.

Click the pic and look at the photos of the speakers

The next higher upgrade to the boom has a speaker grille with an external tweeter mount.  Anyone know if those grilles can be purchased separately?

What kit is that?
Do you have the Harley part number of the upgrade?

Edit: I found it. You can buy the grills but it comes with the tweeters mounted

No the grilles can not be purchased separately, they are made with the midrange and the tweeter mounted to them. Like mentioned by others, you don't have a lot of choices with the current situation, there are a couple others but mainly the Focal's (krx2 or kr2) or the JM speakers (wouldn't recommend them, but haven't heard their latest) if only speakers is what you are definitely going with. If you are changing more and want to keep your current amp you could go with the Boom II option, if you feel that the problems some had were taken care of with the DTII update a week or so ago. I just started installing the Boom Stage II on mine and hope to have it flashed Wednesday, to see how it is. There are a few good options I think, but really, it depends on what someone REALLY wants and what they want to keep and spend.

Me, I like my factory HU and will keep it (period for me their is no other option, but that's me), so I always change the other things, and I know my goal, and cost does not factor in a lot with me, because I have built and spent enough on stereo's to fund a few lifetimes, but that is what I enjoy, and how I spend too much money. Anyway, I will do the Stage II because I think if everything works correctly, it is a very good option, if it doesn't work correctly, I will remove it, and install another option, which for me, would be the BT setup (BT4180 and the 7.1 pros) which I have sitting in a box right next to my bike. My point is, decide what your willing to spend, where you want to end up at, and what your will to give up, this needs to be decided before you can really get a handle on anything.

Like normal, it said while I was typing someone posted, and like normal I didn't read it, so the above reply was without the numbers and his reply.

FLHX, I am sure you can buy the grilles as replacement parts, well I know you can, but I am sure they are as much as the whole speaker system, when bought separately, since you would have to buy both, I don't really think that is even an option, even for me, I would never consider that, matter of fact I'm going to check on the price.

I did check, and it's exactly the area I thought it might be, but anyway, $160, so $320 plus tax, or if you get it discounted, maybe 250+, either way it's around $300 that solves basically nothing.

Someone could make some good money fabricating a nice grille/tweeter mount for component speakers.

The 165KR2's are 2 OHM and take about 70W RMS.  Seems like a good choice to run with the stock CVO amp.  Just need to figure out how to mount the tweeters.  I've had this component set in a car, and it is pretty bad ass.

I have a hard time paying HD prices for speaker equipment.  For the same money you can always get better from companies like Morel, JL Audio, Focal, and Hertz.  The problem right now seems to be how the HD head unit handles DSP duties.  Pretty typical of HU's these days from automotive manufacturers.

Has anyone used a JL cleansweep, JBL MS8 or Mosoconi 6to8 DSP on these 6.5 GT HU's?
