Stock Dyno numbers seem low?
« on: April 26, 2015, 01:58:17 PM »

My local Harley dealer was offering a free basic dyno of hp & torque so I had it done. I have a stock 2009 Springer FXSTSSE3 and the numbers were Max Hp = 71.77, Max torque = 95.26. For a 110 motor I thought these numbers, especially Hp, were low. Any thoughts?

Max Hp = 83.09, Max torque = 97.31. For my baseline dyno 2015 110.

I'm not chasing #'s but I would like to have triple digests.

Baseline with Supertrapp 2:1

HP - 85 Torque 103

With TTS

HP - 91 Torque 109

Not huge differences, but much more ridable with the TTS and dyno time. Your stock numbers do look a little low.

The dealers who offer those "free" dyno runs do it for a very good reason; they want to sell you performance work and a tune.  One of the things some of them do is to just do a single run without getting the bike up to full operating temp to keep the "before" numbers as low as possible.  There are many other tricks as well.  If you're happy with the way the bike runs currently, forget the dyno runs and just ride it.  Chasing numbers for bragging rights is a fools game.  If you're actually looking for performance work, go find a reputable shop with a full time pro doing the tuning.

I'm not chasing numbers by any means or was I looking to get any work done.  I did the test because I have not been happy with the way it runs. Now seeing those numbers I'm more concerned that there is a problem with something that the numbers are low. I get it about the stuff dealers try to pull and your right those numbers are based on a single run. I'm happy with the torque but I thought the hp should be more like Cross threadeds, low 80's at least.

"I did the test because I have not been happy with the way it runs."

If it's not been tuned, I would start there if the motor is otherwise healthy.

Have you owned this bike since 2009, or is it new to you?  The reason I ask is that if you've owned the bike since 2009, I would expect you to know if it's running the same as it was when brand new.  If you bought it used, then of course you have no way of knowing if it used to run better but things have deteriorated, and you also wouldn't know if the previous owner made any changes.

IF you can assume the numbers are real, and not the result of manipulation by the dealer to sell his tuning services, then yes 71 hp is significantly lower than what should be expected of a stock 110 in proper running condition.  The problem is you really can't assume the numbers you got from that one run are accurate.  I would suggest finding someone with the same bike and convincing them to let you take it for a ride, but the odds of that happening are very slim to none.  So the next suggestion would be to do some research and find a reputable shop, ask them to do an honest baseline evaluation (don't forget the basics first, like plugs and aircleaner, compression, etc.).  Depending upon what they find, ask for recommendations to give you what you expect from the bike.  You may just need a good professional tune, or you may need cams and other work, depending on what your goals are.  The secret is to find the right person to do all of this, and you shouldn't assume a Harley dealership is the right place with the right person.  If usually isn't.

I wish you luck my friend but for me it's ride it all I can while the weather is good and this winter, I'm going to do a set of cams and another tune.

My last bike was a 96" worth no work just a high flow breather, 2-1 pipe, and pv5. Post tune #'s were 77hp and 93tq. So yeah, that's low.

reality is that a basic stage one (full exhaust, hi-flow filter, and tuner with proper dynotune) make a world of difference on the 110 both in terms of performance and reducing the heat.

In addition, be ready to address a few week areas if not already done on a 2009.  Most important to replace are the stock lifters and cam bearing.  If you're thinking of doing a cam change, then easy to do it then.  Many cases of lifter failure causing severe engine damage at 20-30K miles, some lower than that.  Not sure what your mileage is, but personally I would not wait until 20K miles (reason I did mine preemptively at 5K miles)

and another thing, when you have the cam chest open make sure they check the crank run out

Wow...greyhair, those numbers are crazy!  I think you better have the Dyno re-calibrated!  Your gain for what added I would be disappointed!  Maybe your starting HP / TQ numbers are way off.. read past post...not even close!  Have the best vtwin / salt flat mechanic run mine.  to the pavement 74hp/94tq...stock!  full sac/dynopak power tuner...94hp/115tq.  realistic numbers and runs correct with numbers if you had that between your legs before!

Those numbers are pulled off the Dyno sheet they gave me after the 2:1 was installed.  Can they manipulate Dyno runs ?
Before this bike, I had a 2008 cvo ultra with Reinhart 2:1.   I can not find the Dyno sheet to compare the two bikes.
