Spark plugs
« on: May 07, 2015, 12:16:36 PM »

I will be replacing the plugs this weekend. Is there any benefit in using the Screamin eagle style($18/pr) or better
to stick w/ the HD standard plugs(9/pr). Bike is 2011 CVO Convertible.

Thanks,

My 07 SERK does not run good on those regular plugs but it runs some nice with those Screamin Eagle plugs. Every bike is different.

Mostly hype.  The SE plugs will not improve performance, but they will last longer due to the platinum electrodes before performance drops off.  If you plan to change your plugs at 50k miles instead of the recommended interval, maybe they would be of some value.  However, if you're paying more than twice the price and only getting twice the miles between changes, why bother?

I think I would get those that claim to add an additional 5 to 10 HP.    ::)

Save you money, just use the regular Harley plugs. Have talked to a couple of tuners that say Harleys knock sensor system is calibrated to use the stock wires and plugs. If you replace them with something other you may get false readings of detonation and may reduce your timing.
One tuner told me they have seen it on a dyno during tuning, they second tuner said one of the first things they check before a tune is to see if they have aftermarket plugs or wires. Second is functioning 02 sensors.
Jerry can probably explain it in more detail than I can.

AS a tuner we pull the non stock plugs and wires to tune the bike. the stock plug is fine as well the NGK plug in a colder version for higher compression performance build has proven to work as well.

With other I have seen issues with timing and drivablity issues.. The stock stuff works fine so why change it..  Look up one of my older posts with the E 3 spark plug that was a thread..  :2vrolijk_21:

Just curious, which NGK do you use?

DCPR8E is one step colder than the stock RA8HC. Gap at .035 has worked fine. Once in a while you may have to mess with one if it it showing timing pull back when thee is no reason for it. But most of the time that gap will work just fine.
I only use the NGK on bikes over 200 CCP that are going to see city type high heat riding.

Will the screamin eagle plug for high compression engines benefit an engine running 10.7-1?  Thanks

I do not use those SE plugs.. From what I understand the SE plug is not colder..  Its all about the tune and where ( region) you ride fuel etc. Some times a build that has a ping once in a while will never ping with a colder plug. This is a tuning tool like other tools.

Probably not, other than perhaps lasting longer than a standard plug.  If you want a fine wire center electrode plug that will last and offer the same "benefits" claimed by the SE plug but in a one step colder heat range, take a look at the NGK Iridium plug, part DCPR8EIX.  You really can't tell if a particular plug is going to be an improvement in your bike without testing it, as GMR Steve stated.  All the advertising hype should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Running a one step colder plugs  in many cases will not hurt anything.. As the heat range is not "cold" compared to other applications.

Tuning wise some plugs can create issues. Stock plug for 90% of the tunes and one step colder for the higher compression engines, poor fuel city driving etc.
