Damn they look fine. I really like the look of S&S rocker covers and in black are even better. Thanks for posting the pics.

Looks great and some very impressive numbers!   I just had a 120ST put in my 2012 Skunk and should get it back in a couple of days.   My numbers won't be what you have there but still can't wait to see how it does over the 110".   Congrats and ride safe!

When I did the 120r a couple of years ago, one of the reasons I didn't do the S&S was I thought the HD motor looked much better. I agree after getting the new motor installed that the S&S does look better especially with the black cases. certainly was an expensive lesson but it is amazing the difference between the 2 motors at least straight out of the crate.

I've been reading through your thread a couple times now...

I have a question I didn't see you mention - How is the heat from the 124" S&S?  My 110" is getting to be so annoying it's sometimes not fun to ride.

I'm at a crossroads - dump more money into my 110", or swap out for a crate S&S 124".  Cost-wise, the two options can't be that far apart.

Thanks!

The 110 motor was almost unbearable until my mods. My 124 (R&R/Hyperformance Short Block) has no excessive heat issues.

SDCVO,

Congrats on your 124" build, hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed mine.   These motors are a ton of fun to spool up and ride.

Redbeard,

Here are 2 suggestions to the heat and performance query just depends on what you're after.

If it is lowering the heat and a little performance gain without losing a lot of bottom end on the 110 then you might consider a little performance change, exhaust change and cam with a little more overlap.

The first suggestion would be to take your 110 have and have the heads done by Sachs or someone else , put in the 24D or 577 GMR cam, 10.5 to 1 SE (Mahle Pistons), and Lifters. .030 headgasket squish set to .030-037 at roughly 10.5 to 10.6 to 1 compression.   This should lower the heat issue and boost the power of the bike quite noticeably.

This should yield you with a decent pipe, 58 mm throttlebody and Air Cleaner approx 120 squared some are higher, but that is roughly the ballpark.   There are several of these builds on the site like CVOSTU's.

Suggestion 2:

If you want more than that you might consider the route of using your stock cases and consider doing o a low compression 124 with them vs. a complete motor.  These LC 124 builds have been extremely reliable one buddy has 60k on his now, There are 8 of these in the group we ride with and 2 HC builds.  I had 54k on my S&S build before i refreshed it.   The T3 cases are good except in my opinion the oiling situation.   Using your stock cases you wont have the OIL hoses exposed and running along the bottom of the bike and all the oiling will be internal.    Just have to have the cases cut for the larger juggs, you should be in the ballpark of 118-125 hp and 135-145 torque.  124" S&S Crank, Have S&S convert your throttlebody to 58mm, 5.39 injectors, S&S pushrods,  Premium Lifters, 585 cam with new bearings, timken while your there in the cases, and the S&S  pistons to make it the 10.25 to 1 compression.   There quick, lots of power, tour well and no pms at this compression.

I am not a fan of the MSO route or the external oil lines.

FWIW:  There are companies if your so inclined that will do the cutting of the cases to make them internal oiling, but that voids the S&S warranty, because if they were to allow this to go on it would violate Mother Harley's Patent.    Until S&S delivered the T3 cases they were using the SE Cases for their 124 in the 09 up frame.

Best of luck with your project whatever you decide to do.

Unbalanced - thank you for the detailed reply.

I'm well aware of the things I can do to help rid the 110" of some of it's heat.  I've already changed intake/exhaust, as well as cams (Andrews 57H).  All this, combined with a custom tune, but still, there is heat.

I've not done any headwork, yet.  I was considering it, but if I'm going to continue to invest in this engine, I figure I should really do the complete job, including splitting the cases, new crankshaft, cases cut for larger displacement, cylinders bored out, heads ported/flowed, new TB, new injectors, etc.

I didn't realize that the S&S 124" has external oil lines.  That's definitely a consideration on which path to take.

Anyway, not trying to hi-jack this thread - the feedback is appreciated.

Thanks again!

When I spoke with S&S at the last Biketoberfest, the 124 Crates were still available with the SE Cases...

This could change things.  I'm going to be talking with S&S at Sturgis next week.  Not looking to make a quick decision on this, but just getting started on my homework.

Thanks!

I don't know if my 124 is typical as far as heat is concerned but it is considerably cooler running than the 110.  Granted my 110 was stock, only did the K&N air filter and went with the RHTD exhaust.  The 124 I have now has the external oil lines which I'm not crazy about but it is what it is.  I have the 124HC, 640 cams and 66mm throttle body.  Last year I ran the Bassani Road Rage but it was defining and not what I wanted.  This winter I installed the V&H Power Cell Headers with the Crusher Mellows.  It was a pain to put into my 08 because I had the Baker Plus 1 oil pan with the True Track that I had to remove and I really miss the True Track.  When we return from a ride we used to get a kick at the sounds of the 110 cooling off and how long it took to stop.  The 124 barely makes a sound when we return,  my Yamaha FJR with the radiator gives off more heat while riding than the 124.  I'm really surprised by just how much of a difference it makes.  I'm spoiled now, I just hate my legs slowly burning.  My results may not be what others are experiencing.  I'm just a rider not a mechanic and as I said this is just my observations.  Try to talk with Scott Hakins from S&S if you get a chance.

Really good question.

Like you, I have no issues with heat either on my 124.   Runs great, quiet top end and scoots pretty good too.
Scott is great to talk with he will be at the HD Dealer in the S&S booth at Sturgis.   Scott said that the SE Cases are still available.

RAYG  I am happy to hear your build is completed now and is running great. S&S stepping in was a huge deal there to correct the issue..  Now you got the engine and pipe combo working.. If the dealer had installed the engine you had paid  for  vs getting it wrong ,..you would have had tq coming on sooner , and it would have made about the same tq peak just sooner across the board.  :2vrolijk_21:

The SE case builds can be had not sure for how long.

Thanks Steve,

It was a costly error on my part but one I will never repeat and hope others make absolutely sure of the package they get when they put their money down.  It's been running rich so I made an appointment with Dave in PA.  It's just not worth riding it without a decent tune so I have been riding my other bike.  I'm scheduled for Sept. 1.  I have been doing all my outside work so when September rolls in I will be on the road for a month.  I took your advice to have it tuned even though it seems to run well.  The changes were of course the S&S motor and the V&H power cell headers with the Crusher mellows.  I've waited this long might as well make sure everything is done properly.   It has to run better than the first tune I got from Joe's Cycle.

Thanks for the help.

After blowing up my 120r a couple of months ago and biting the bullet to put in a S&S crate 124, I finally got it back fully tuned (by Bob in Hayward CA who does amazing work) and ready you go. I went for a very short ride yesterday but got to "play a little" today. I wasn't expecting too much of a difference between my 120r and the new 124 but boy was I pleasantly surprised! I couldn't be happier right now after getting on the back roads today and "ringing it neck" a bit!
Of course I hated writing the check, especially because I pulled my usual crazy behavior by doing a bunch of mods while the bike was in the shop, but now that I have paid the bill, I am as fired up as the day I got the bike! I will post up a couple of pics. As you will see, I had S&S powder coat the rocker box and cam covers so I could keep the warranty in tact. Also changed all the hardware out to the polished SS Diamond Engineering 12 pt which looks amazing IMO. No more Hot Toppers thank God!! Alo did the Ultra Cool oil cooler which seems to work great after running it very hard tonight.

Bob @ RC is one of the best tuners in the country. :2vrolijk_21:
