$1000 budget engine build for an 88" TC Dyna?
« on: July 01, 2015, 08:11:44 PM »

Any suggestions on the best way to perk up a carbureted 88" TC engine in a 2000 Dyna. First problem is it has short shots with no baffles..  Didn't know if the big bore kit would work with stock cam and heads? Or better bump the compression with pistons, rings, and maybe a cam? I am thinking that down the road he may be able to throw a few more dollars at it, but the bike needs a refreshing at this point.. Thanks for any positive input.. I will be the labor in this project, so let's try and keep it basic please. I am just trying to help a good guy keep his dream alive. Thanks for any positive input in advance.

order the parts you need and gaskets at 20% off.  Try Rebecca at Tri County HD

check cam chain tensioners for replacement and crank run out in that year they were spec'd for no more than .003 since then its changed to .012 with the newer cranks.

As a budget build put either the hd 203 or 211 Harley cam in the motor depending on personal likes /dislikes of where you want the power.  The 203 bottom end torque, 211 more of higher reving cam approx. 3k rpm up.
95 pistons and have jugs bored to accept the 95" pistons
purchase the hd fixed length pushrods will make it easier vs. buying and setting adjustables.
jet the carb and let er rip.

need head and base gaskets, cam cover gasket, rockerbox gaskets, new flapper or flapper and filter under the cradle, exhaust gaskets, some blue Loctite and new bearings for inside the cam chest.

X2 on dealing with the spring tension for the chains. Aside from that they just need to breath a little. Bottom ends seem pretty solid on these older tc's

big bore kit (98",495.00) & S&S 585 cam kit (399.00),mild 1.900/1.615 headwork (425.00),a little over your 1000.00 goal,but will easily give 105+/110+

Your cyls bored to 98" with all Cometic gaskets and set at 10.5 cr, with S&S .585 EZ cams/Barnett clutch spring/K&N oil filter/NGK plugs..........$998.00.
Highly recommend at least a set of our Stage I Heads.

Check out the carb, get rid of the "plugs" so you can adjust it if it hasn't been done. Plenty of youtube on how to do it if your not sure. I would caution you on some of "expert" mods that you find suggested. It will run real well with adjustments and jetting.
Good Luck!

Cam tensioners yes, that crank is a 2000 model year. It has a Timken bearing so that is a plus!!!! I don't think a stock 88 will move the flywheels. Sooooooo he should be good to go!!!! These were good motors back in the day. And to think all we did was bitch about the cam tensioners. If we had only known what was coming down the tracks back then!!!!!

To save some $$ get a set of Cyco replacement shoes for your OE tensioners. http://www.cycogaskets.com/premium%20quality.html. Bullet proof. They have excellent gaskets also.

Something that has been over looked is the  stock IGN module. With a timing curve for fuel from 2000,   Ign will create issues with today's pump fuel. The timing curve is very aggressive.  Keeping compression low will be key to use stock module.

I would not use the 585 ES ( great cam in a better set up )  a cam with  less duration ( mainly ex side) to work with that ex system the op is going to use.  Andrews 26 or 37 SE 203  You have stock valve springs and they are not going to work with a cam over 550 lift.  Nothing wrong with a basic 95 inch kit with a mild cam.

95 inch pistons bolt in cam. That will keep the comp ratio low enough to not create issue with the stock Ign module , and fit into the budget as listed.

But that was already posted .. Unbalanced has the best route in my opinion. As a shop owner I would steer you away from the large cams bigger ci at this time due to a few reason that I listed a few others that have not been but I am sure you get the point.

Good luck with the build.

How about closer to $500  ;D
I hate to dabble. If cost is of a concern then concentrate on bang for the buck at 88".

Assuming the motor is sealing well and not using oil..
Install new tensioners, Cyco
Install an Andrews TW37
Mill heads .050
Use a .030 head gasket
Buy a DTT TC88 ignition box
Tune it properly for the new combination which for a carb bike is mainly timing

Plan B would up to 95" and change nothing
Plan C would raise the compression via pistons with a dome and add head work

Bolt a set of S&S .509's or Andrews 21's in there and call it a day, if looking for a simple bump in power.
