The miles are really starting to add up - 2007 SERK -
« on: July 13, 2015, 12:55:34 PM »

In between all the rain we have had this summer in OHIO, I have been riding my a$$ off.  At least I think I have been anyway!  It was a much bigger learning curve with this bike than it was with the last one (2009 FXD Superglide).  Learning what noises were normal, what ones I should be paying attention to, etc.  I developed a loud and annoying tick early in (3000 miles) and replaced the stock lifters to GMR lifters, problem solved.  Had to learn that 6th gear was damned near useless on this bike for average speed riding.  But once I realized that, all those crazy annoying noises and clattering sounds .. went away..  I found a better Oil along the way and I continue to swear by it.  I took the advice of other riders and tried a different tranny oil (Redline w/Shockproof) and I think I do like it better than the prior.  Drained, changed and bled the hydro clutch and that was another night and day fix as well.  I know I am somewhat rambling, but I think you get the picture.  Learning the nuances of this machine (which I was ready to dump almost immediately after buying it) has, I think, maybe brought me "closer" to it. .LOL  I am not currently in as much of a hurry to get rid of it anymore...maybe once I am no longer upside down on it.. I might get itchy again.. LOL  BUT I digress... when I bought this bike it had 2048 miles on it.  Last friday was the anniversary date in fact.  It now has 15,245 miles on it and I think, as I said, it might be growing on me...
Man I really need to get back on my meds!! LOL
Having a good time riding...See you on the road!

If you haven't already done so, the isolated drive pulley from HARLEY will get rid of noise in sixth year.

I might actually look into that.  I hate having to feather the clutch so much when going slow in parking lots and the sort.  Its kinda funny that my old 1981 Yamaha XJ550 Maxim had this system on it from the factory.  LOL.  All jokes aside, my bike just "feels" right cruising along in 6th gear at 80 MPH.. purrs.  Too bad I cant go that fast ALL the time.. LOL.
Thanks

I don't know if the 2007's & the 2008"s CVO Road Kings have the same drive gear but I had to go with the 30 tooth front sprocket a number of years ago.  Made a big difference on taking off and making 6th gear more useful.  There are lot's of post you can do a search on.  I haven't ridden much this year but I still have 82,000 on my 08.

Enjoy your riding, summer is just to darn quick!

If you change the gear on the comp sprocket to a lower gear then 6th becomes a viable gear.
OR
You can change your final drive pulley on the rear wheel.
Either way the stock gearing is too tall and lowering it via a change in the primary or rear wheel will fix the issue
H-D used to make a kit to swap out the primary including the chain but its obsolete

Seems like changing the rear sprocket would be "easier"...no?   What's the most common course of action for doing the rear sprocket?

The 07 have the tallest  gearing of any TC Harley ever made at 2.79/1!! Changin out the front pulley from a 32 to a 30 brings the ratio closer 3/1, lowering first gear and all other across the board. Do the mods to the swingarm and use the stock belt. You'll never regret it, makes it a new ride to enjoy. Buffalo

I didn't know there was a rear belt pulley to change the 2007. :nixweiss:

Get the rear pulley for a 2007 Japanese model sportster, you can get it both ways with or without the cush drive. I did on my 2007 and it is a good upgrade.

Is that I direct swap out?  Just need the sprocket?  Good source to finding it?  And I can use my existing belt?

Original belt fits fine, direct swap if not going to the cush drive, if cush drive then you will need all the parts that come in the cush drive kit, all parts available from harley, just remember to get the japenese sportster version. That pulley is 2 teeth more than stock

Good advice. It's amazing how much difference those extra two teeth make in the way the gearing feels.

Everyone keeps saying the parts are available from Harley, but I dont know the actual model name of the japanese sportster or something.. Because I cannot seem to find the designation that separates them.  I was hoping to find the part used or something, but I cant find it at all...LOL and I DO know how to use google...UGH...
