Stock '15 RGU exhaust with V&H monster ovals?
« on: August 12, 2015, 05:47:17 PM »

Exhaust gurus... Any problems just replacing my stock exhaust cans with V&H monster ovals on my '15 RGU? I want to wait until I have a couple thousand miles on it before I change any California required stuff. Will it hurt or help performance?

Thanks,
Lance

Lance,
Since nobody's chimed in yet, I'll play.  Please don't take this as gospel, but I've heard from some folks in the past when I was researching for my first Harley, that if you make the bike exhale easier (eg., new mufflers) , you need to add more fuel with some sort of fuel management system, as easier "exhalation" can make the bike run leaner, which means it could run hotter.  Which means more wear on the engine, etc.  And as far as I know, Harleys were setup to run lean anyway for emissions, now whether or not that's still true, I don't know.
You would still be choking off your exhalation with your cat systems in the headers, though, so maybe it's a wash?
Again, I'd listen to the pros that know on this site before I'd take my word as the definitive answer.  Also, have you called V&H and asked them about it?  (You'll notice I never mentioned talking to a dealer...you'd get a different answer from each one you talked to, I'm afraid!   :o)
I'm sorry if I may have confused the issue, so I apologize in advance.  I know how much you want those ovals and I think they're an awesome choice for your scoot.  Just throwing in my .02 worth (which ain't worth .02!!!)   ;)

I have them in hand Harry! From everything I can gather just changing the cans is not an issue but I just kind of wanted to hear it from the gurus. V&H didn't seem too helpful, my dealer said it was fine... Let's see if any other good folks here know more.

I suspect it will be fine also. I did that exact thing on a Road King I owned a few years back - stock headers and V&H Ovals, pre-Monster Ovals probably. If you have the pipes I'd put them on - worst case scenario you change back to stock. I have Monster Ovals on my CUSE8 and like them. Over a winter I had Fullsac headers and the Monster Ovals installed and ran it without a tuner for a season - still ran good but is better now with a good tune.

Thanks Kiro, that was pretty much my strategy. Put the monter ovals on, run a couple thousand miles then ride out to Lake Havasu, AZ and have the man put the head pipe and tune it. I just didn't want to mess anything up until then.

Sounds like a happy ending then.  Sure am glad I didn't muck it up for you!

Hey if Kiro says it, that's good enough for me!   :2vrolijk_21:

Ride on, brother!

Hey...I just thought of something...Idaho doesn't have near the EPA restrictions that Kaliforny does!  Oh, boy!!!    :D

No issue just changing mufflers.   Rglidekid,  I am super jealous of that glide brother.

Awww, c'mon, brother!  Look at yours!  That eagle on the shark nose rocks!  And the blue that year was awesome.  I would imagine there ain't many of those around!  Keep that one and get you a new one someday!  Or trade if you can bear to part with her.  I've seen them going for as high as $13-14k still.  But I would understand you always keeping her.  They really are sweet bikes.  Just got done watching a video of a 2001 like yours on YouTube, just to refresh my memory:

Hey, as an aside, my new wife's dad was stationed at the air base at Newfoundland back in the day.  She was a teen back then and remembers it well.  Beautiful country!

Well I took it out for a ride with the new mufflers on it last night, I really like the sound and there's not any difference in performance either way that I can detect.

But here's something, it smells like it's running rich. I rode it again to go get coffee this morning and the same thing, I was catching whiffs of what seems like rich exhaust to me. I never detected any exhaust odor at all with the stock muffler. Thoughts?

Yes, I made sure the factory oils etc are burned off. ;)

AC fixer - you probably don't have an issue, but you can check your manual to learn how to read the on-board trouble codes. I have no idea how this works on your bike, but mine has a protocol that reads through the odometer. This will indicate if the one/both cylinders are running lean.

Well that's just it Kiro, it doesn't smell lean... if anything it smells rich.

Still - check the codes to learn if the bike is providing any information...

And here's a video that shows both non-Boom!Box and with Boom!Box troubleshooting.
The Boom!Box portion starts at about the 5 minute mark in the video.

Thanks guys.

I ran the diagnostic startup, everything said "N" except SPDO which had a U0184 code and part no. 70900293A which appears to be a lost communication with the radio (maybe when I disconnected the speedo cluster for handlebar adjustment?).

No other codes. It might be just my imagination (running rich) or maybe still something burning off of the mufflers.
