Need Harley PN's for o-rings and also your thoughts on oil filters
« on: September 02, 2015, 11:28:18 AM »

I'll be doing the 5K service myself and have ordered the service manuals.
In the meantime, does anyone out there have the part numbers for the three o-rings that go on the tranny, oil, and primary drain plugs?  And also for the appropriate derby gasket (the paper one).
Also, at the risk of opening a can of worms, which oil filter do you use and why?  Please include a part number if you can.  I've heard that using a smaller micron filter is not a good idea with these 110's.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The O-rings are a #13. Buy them for 6 cents each almost anywhere except the dealer .
Usually just use a chrome Harley filter.

Ditto on the O rings.  Harley sells a Gasket Service Kit,  Part # 17369-06 which includes the O rings and primary inspection (derby) cover gasket in rubber.  That kit may have been updated.  I have always used the chrome Harley Super Premium Filter but on my 10k used a K&N.

The derby cover gasket is back to an o-ring on the 15's, at least it was last week when I had mine off.

If they didn't cost more than they're worth to ship I'd mail you a handful of drain plug rings, I have a lifetime supply.
They're a buck apiece or something at the dealer, about a nickel each bought in bulk.

I've been using the K&N filter for years simply because it has the 17mm nut welded on the end making it easy to remove.

Thanks for that offer, I appreciate it!
Whenever I need parts, I shop at this fantastic old mom and pops store down the street from a chain store.  They have the most amazing collection of stuff.  I like to give them my business and in return they give me personalized service.
I like the K&N filter as well, I was just wondering if they went with a small micron size on the filter part, and I've heard that's not good for our CVO's.  Apparently their micron size is not a problem!

Think the orings are available at many places.  I picked up a bag of 100 at my local Grainger for about $6. As stated before its a #13 buna-n.  I too switch between the HD and K&N depending on what I have in the cabinet.  in 5 years doing my own service I dont think I've changed but one primary cover oring.  They hold up for many services.

I've got a different derby cover, though, and they're flat on the inside...don't ask me why...so they don't take a rubber o-ring, they take that paper ring.  I think it's a gimmick, but maybe somewhere there's a legitimate reason for the difference.  Maybe...    :nixweiss:

X2 on purchasing the o rings elsewhere if available to you locally and the K&N filter with the welded nut makes installing and removing much easier.

When removing the oil filter some will run out and make a little mess. There are many ways to help catch some it like the harley funnel. I have provided a link to below. I have one, it works.... nothing to get excited about. Some use a cut up soda bottle or flexible funnel which was recommended to me recently, see link.

I've had very limited success with all the supposed oil catcher deals, I usually just let it run in the pan, spritz with some brake-clean if I'm in a hurry, or just let it drip dry and wipe up what's left tomorrow.

What I have been using for 5 or 6 years, form around the underside of the filter, drain into a small pan, no oil on the engine case or on the floor.

Take regular aluminum foil and place it under the filter to catch the mess.  Also, I think HD may sell Screamin Eagle aluminum foil at $34.95 a roll.

It looks like you've been talking to an uninformed person, based on that comment.  There is nothing about a 110 that makes the filter requirements any different than any other Twin Cam engine.  As for the micron rating, claims about micron "rating" on the box are more marketing hype than fact, and don't correspond to an industry standard.  Regardless, the K&N doesn't claim to be a smaller micron rating than the Harley filter, which claims a ridiculous 5 microns.  The same filter used to claim 10 microns many years ago, the only thing that changed was the printing on the box.  K&N makes no micron rating claims, and if they did it would be in the 10 to 20 micron range, same as most others on the market.

K&N, part number KN-171C for chrome, KN-171B for black.  Been running them for at least ten years now.

I just recently started using hiflo HF171c oil filters. It looks like a K&N, smells like one but doesn't have the K&N stamp on the nut. My Indy sells them for $10 a pop. They have a website but not much other than general info.

At first when I read the threads (may have been on a different forum?) the talk was that the 110's demand for oil circulation can be, in effect, choked down by a "tighter" filter.  At the time the argument made enough sense for me to ask the question before I pulled the trigger.
As always, I appreciate your comments, Jerry.  We've all talked to uninformed folks about Harley stuff, but believing what they say is another story entirely!   8)
In any case, I've ordered 2 K&N's from Amazon at under $13 apiece and free shipping, which seemed like a good deal to me!
