Bolt in my new tire
« on: September 09, 2015, 07:34:06 PM »

Got 400 miles on the new bike and noticed this yesterday. Just got it back from the dealer with a new tire. No deductible, no charge of any kind. I like that !

Since I can lay a pretty fair patch, I say I'll take it.......I know I'm gonna die one day. If its free it's for me, tire had 270mi & a roofing nail dead in middle. Your bolt was to close to the sidewall, even for a knothead like me.

I'll pass on that, too.

2K I'm with you, been running bike tires that I have patched and plugged since I have been riding (almost 50 yrs). Heck in the earlier years NO ONE that I knew could afford to go buy a new tire just because it had a nail in it. We all fixed our own tires. 99% of the time if a patch or plug fails it fails as a slow leak, I have never had one blow out.

Thanks, Warlock. I figured I would catch a bunch of grief.........but I, like you, have been doing it over 50 yrs....never had a blowout. It all started because we didn't have the money and continued because it worked. One thing I did stop doing was putting a shoe (part of another tire) on a cut 1" or better........knew I was pushing my luck with that trick.

I know its not ideal but picked up a small nail in center of a stock tire with less than 1000 miles on prior bike.  Put a plug in it and put another 12000 miles on that tire.  Think chance of problem depends on where and how large the hole is and how aggressive you ride.  That bolt in the first post is huge and no way I'd try to patch that.

When they took off the tire the  bolt was 4 inches long.

Key is where and how hard or fast you ride. At 100 mph mostly every ride, not taking chance even at 200-300 a pop on rears.

So for those that say they would never plug a motorcycle tire, have you ever or would you ever plug your car or truck tire?

The answer you will get most will be........yes, but it has 4 wheels. Same principle, have you ever had a plug/patch fail?

yes would plug a car tire or truck. rarely go over 80 in car and three more there to slow it down. plus front end don't shake as bad when on blows out and rear will not kick you off like a rodeo bull
