Running hot
« on: September 13, 2015, 09:27:30 AM »

Got my new 15 CVO LTD tuned on the dyno, bikes got HD race tuner, V&H power duals and V&H hi output mufflers. When bike was picked up new it only had a generic map downloaded until after break in and at which time was put on the dyno for a proper tune. Bike runs well and came in at 92hp/103 ft lbs of torque, which was a gain of 13hp from stock.  The problem is that the bike seems to run quite a bit hotter than it did with just the generic download, to the point where as soon as you come to a stop and bikes idles down it is in the rear cylinder shutdown mode. Bike went back to dealer and they adjusted the fuel/air mixture to add more fuel in "mid driving" range but still seems to produce more heat than before dyno, at this point I am considering having just the generic map reinstalled as was prior to dyno even if I do lose some horse power. Any advice or comments would be great.

Do you have access to a professional independent dyno tuner (not a dealership) in your area?  Dealership tuners generally only tune a small fraction of bikes as compared to a true professional tuner.  Tuning is an area where the experience and skills of the individual at the controls is exceptionally important.  If your bike is going into shutdown mode after the tuning, and it did not do this prior to the tuning - then you need to find a more capable guy...

Turn the "Shut down" mode off. It is ambient air operated on the 15.

I do and have been giving this some thought, figuring that the dyno is only as good as the person doing the tune, will be giving them a call.

Thanks, did not realize that it was based on air temp instead of engine temp, will shut it down.

A REAL tune will do wonders for you. Get rid of the heat and gain performance- you might find that is all you will want to do (unlike the rest of us modaholics).

If you let everyone know where you are located, you'll get lots of solid recommendations on tuning guys.

Weird thought as I typed "guys", I'm surprised there are no tuner girls. Like, not even one. Must be one somewhere.... (envisioning a hot babe in a bikini tuning a bike  :iloveyou:)

Dan, when you say hotter is the air (ambient) temp the same as before the tune? Has the oil and head temps been monitored? Ask the dealer to check and spend more time getting it tuned. My CVO even with a crappy dealer tune ran better than stock.

I know one in Michigan, drives a vette, easy on the eyes.

I was tuning bike end of last week. Had a 15 come in with a DD fat cat. Bike ran ok no real complaints a bit warm but nothing to get upset over. your basic download.. The rear cylinder was in need of over 25 units of fuel in the pro tuner and the front was pulling 15+ plus units.. HOWEVER this is where a hd is one of these builds that is not super picky on the tune and will RUN even if its wrong..  a few examples ( btw a few of these had been dealer tuned) All ran decent some had a large loss of power than others but a tune that is correct with the right parts is a big seat of the pants change.   That muffler you have is the reason the power is off, not the best( too large) it can also throw a tuner a few curves during the tune..
