Bushtec Tire Wear
« on: October 28, 2015, 03:42:54 PM »

Picked up a Bushtec Quantum to get the wheels for my trailer. When I asked the guy if he had aired the shocks to level it I got a very strange look from him like What?  He said I have 35 pounds in each tire. I had a air compressor with me so I pulled it out of his garage and showed him how it worked. The look on his face was priceless. He absolutely had no clue it had air suspension nor did his two friends that had owned it previously.  I started to ask him if anyone ever said anything about the wheels being towed in at the bottom but kept quite so I could get the deal done.

Not sure you can see the wear on the inside of the tire but I am amazed. Funny thing when the deal was done and he gave me the paperwork he made a point to show me the original manual. Apparently unread by everyone that owned it.

Here is the LH tire, RH is identical. These were brand new tires before a 8,000 mile trip out West.

Mike your right but it's closer than the first attempt.     :huepfenlol2:

I wanted the wheels for mine. Going to get new tires mounted and polish them up. Here it is after a bath.

Nice find, I have the same trailer with the crappy el cheapo stock wheels, those wheels are a bit pricey on the Bushtec site.

Ain't that the truth!  Got them on my '07 and thought they were high priced back then - and they are more now.  But they do look so good.   :2vrolijk_21:

Saw a Bushtec recently with the stock wheels chromed.  Looked really good . . . but I recall John and Andrew both advising me against that.  Seems the stock wheels have such sharp angles they saw the chrome plating will not hold up and begin to flake off.  That is why they went the power coat route several years ago to dress up the stock wheels.

Dragging it for sure - like towing a 300 pound anchor.  I'll bet his gas mileage was cut in half and I would have to think it would adversely affect the bike's handling.  Makes you wonder for sure.

Thanks Dave the Quantum is a nice trailer, the wheels are way out of the realm in most cases but I think I did well on my purchase.  I'm beginning to think a black trailer goes with everything and may just be the way to go.

I know a lot of guys don't like them but I like the Entourage.  Haven't been able to locate one at a good price yet. I guess I like the fender skirts and Old School look.

When you pull the wheels, I wonder if you could tell me about the numbers that are stamped on the shocks?
I am going to convert my old original Bushtec to the modern shocks but I'd like to find out about their availability *other than * through Bushtec. I'm certain that they have the brand and part number stamped on them but haven't learned the number yet.

I had to replace one on my '07 Turbo +2 but that was a while back and it was in warranty and Bushtec sent a new shock.  I do think it was a Monroe brand but I don't have a part number.

I actually pumped the shocks up to compensate for the poor condition so I wouldn't have a problem before I took off.  The guy I got it from pulled it on a 8,000 mile trip with a Goldwing trike.  By the way his wife followed him on her trike, would have thought she would have said hey your wheels are out of whack.  I still have a hard time believing you wouldn't notice the tire wear at some point and wonder why it was happening.  The reason I didn't elaborate on it to the guy was he may have been getting rid of it due to that and I didn't want to lose the deal.

I have three brand new wheels and tires in the garage so if I decide to sell it at least it will have brand new tires and stock Bushtec wheels on it.  In the meantime as soon as the rain moves out I will head up to Bushtec and get new tires put on.  Good little day trip for me.

While on a road trip several years ago I met a guy who saw my Bushtec and asked for help.  He had an air leak and had drug his trailer all day.  Said his gas mileage was down into the mid teens!  Anyway he was savvy enough to know he had a problem and with a call to Bushtec we were able to find the source of his leak (a loose connection) and get him back on the road with air pressure in the shocks.  Shocking (pun intended) that someone could drag that trailer for 8,000 miles and not know something was wrong - even pulling it with a trike.

Glad it worked out well for you and everyone is happy. :2vrolijk_21:

I have run into a lot of them that the air line going to the fill valve over time has split back about 1/16th of an inch, must be from the heat or sun not sure.  All you have to do providing the line has slack is snip it off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch back reinsert and your on the way again.  Have only had one or two that had loose fittings at the air shock, they were easy fixes just tighten and air up.  None of the Bushtec's I have owned had bad shocks, so when someone thinks they are I tell them to check all the fittings and lines.  A lot of the times its the T fitting underneath that either fractured or came loose.

By the way, the guy had no idea it had an adjustable air system on it, when I air it up he looked at it and was speechless.  Now add insult to injury this guy was the President of a Goldwing Chapter for years, its not like he was on a deserted island somewhere that no one would see him dragging it around.  The manual is in pristine condition as no one ever read it. :nixweiss:

Make sure they check your passport at the TN/AL border, Jim.  TN has a daily limit on the number of escapees visitors out of Alabama.... :huepfenjump3:

(I know that because they almost didn't let me move here in 1991 being born and raised in the "Heart of Dixie".  The only reason they did was I was an Auburn fan and not that for the other little college around Tuscaloosa...)

Seriously, let me know when you are headed up here.  Jacksboro is just up the road....if'n ya got time, maybe meet for lunch or something.
