Allstate vs. Geico
« on: November 02, 2015, 08:59:24 PM »

I've had Allstate for years for my motorcycle covereage.  They pay up very quickly and have never raised my premiums.....not even when my bike was totaled.

Policy is due for renewal in a few weeks and being here in San Diego thought I'd check with Geico.  The exact same coverage, 100,000/300,000 with $500 deductable and the same for uninsured/underinsured.....to my surprise, Allstate is cheaper by $20 a year.  Think I'll stay with Allstate since I already have experience with them. :2vrolijk_21:

Been thinking of switching to Allstate from State Farm. Not very pleased with State Farm for auto insurance or homeowners insurance. Also considering USAA but haven't finished my research yet.

USAA uses Progressive.

JCZ,

Allstate was 1800.00 a year in total cheaper for our bikes over Statefarm.   Sad part was the agent is great and said nothing he could do to compete with their prices. so we moved them over to Allstate.   kept the house and cars with Statefarm.   :nixweiss:

Comparison shopped bike insurance with several companies a few months back.  2 companies after learning I was with Allstate said it was a waste of time to quote me.  Closest was Safeco & they were over $200 higher.  The rest were a lot higher than that.  Geico for me has never been competitive.  Used to be loyal on insurance but the way the industry treats consumers, anymore it is a commodity to be shopped for me.

Each state has different rules regarding insurance rates.  That will cause rates for some companies to be better in some states than others. Started out way back with Progressive.  An absolutely ridiculous experience with them regarding an auto claim caused me to shop around.  Do no business with them since then. They sucked so bad I do not consider them a viable alternative, but they are still higher here on bikes.

My coverage is up for renewal this month also. Went with GEICO several years ago, switched from Allstate after a divorce when they jacked my rates up 20+% due to being newly single. Now GEICO's rates keep going up every year along with every other company's. I shopped around a few months ago when my truck policy was up but no one came in at a better rate so I don't know if it's worth my time to shop around for the bike since I'm getting a multi vehicle discount. Still not happy with the premium though. Probably has more to do with me being insurance poor lately, my health care premiums have gone through the roof and the coverage has gone down.  >:(

Hey, JC.  If you're happy with Allstate, I'd stay with them even if they were $20 MORE than Geico.  They're proven and you don't know what Geico might do in the future.  Plus, don't you have a vanishing deductible with them?

Hey, Eric,  I've been with USAA since 1981, and they've never let me down.  Bikes/Cars/Boats/Home ins/Master Card/banking/investments.  They have it all.  I have found them to be a very good and reputable company.  Yes, they farm out to Progressive for bikes, but you speak to a USAA rep and USAA prides itself on excellent phone communication.  They're always professional and courteous.
See my post on how I fared with them on the claim when I totalled my '07 EG.

By all means shop around.  I was with GEICO for years, rates went up slightly year-to-year but doesn't everything?  Finally joined AARP & thought what the heck, I'll check out Foremost Ins. thru AARP  -  what a difference!  Saved about 40%.

Price is not everything with insurance
« Reply #10 on: November 03, 2015, 05:26:34 PM »

I saw the thread on Allstate vs. Geico and thought I would add my 2 cents.  Given the nature of our passion, it is more likely that you will be making a claim against your own company than someone coming after you.

If we go down as a result of a cager's negligence,  will they have enough coverage?
Probably not and thus the need for underinsured motorist coverage aka UIM.  If they have no coverage at all it would be uninsured motorist or UM.  In each of these situations it will be a claim against your own company.  It will be adversarial; you vs. them!  You will want a company that treats you fairly.  Ok, that does not exist in the real world; however, there is a world of difference among the carriers.

Attached is a link to the Arizona Dept of Insurance which keeps track of consumer complaints against carriers per 1k policies written.  You are getting a ratio so you can compare apples to apples.    It also compares premiums for a pretty basic policy.

 https://insurance.az.gov/sites/default/files/documents/files/2015%20WEB_AutoPremiumComparison_Publication.pdf

If Arizona maintains this consumer info, I would imagine it would be available at each of your respective departments of insurance.

Good point. Thanks.

I would like to see a sticky thread about insurance where all the different areas of coverage are explained and what pitfalls to look for. Each state has their own dept of insurance and it does pay to check them out.

I had a homeowners claim with Foremost. They tried to screw me bad and ended up just screwing me a little because I would not put up with the BS.

I'll 2nd USAA!

Here's an example of how good they are. I once had a belt break when a small rock got caught in it and punched a hole through it. USAA covered it no questions. The agent explained that I no doubt ran over the rock which caused it to get flung up into the belt. So, in insurance terms, I "collided" with the pebble, and that caused damage to the bike. I was apprehensive and told the agent that it made it sound like I ran into the pebble. I told him I probably ran over it, and the tire probably slung it upwards and it got caught in the belt. He said not to worry. The repair was made, and the claim paid for.

I've been with Allstate for 45 years. The service and treatment has been so good for me I don't care about a few dollars difference there might be. Had a hand full of claims through the years including 2 years ago when I totaled my bike. The adjuster met me at the shop the day after, wrote me a check for $29,000 saying that and the wrecked bike would cover a new one and he liked the silver and autumn ultra. And so it did.
