TMan vs Zippers Headwork
« on: December 04, 2015, 09:23:44 PM »

Going to end up pulling the top end off again and going to have heads rebuilt and a bore with .010 pistons.

My guy suggests either Tman or Zippers Stage I heads, and says both do good work.

I'm not looking to do any porting or anything drastic, as my heads have been previously cleaned up, but I want them to work nicely with my TTS100 cam I have installed. I figure I want it all set up for 9.7 to 1 compression.

I called both companies, and for $650, they pretty much do the same work, which is all new components and ensuring the heads are flat, and cylinder equalized. They both say they will communicate with my builder, who is known to them, and will match the headwork to work with my cam and engine combination.

Zippers is called the Stage I Workhorse heads, and all their info is on their site:

http://www.zippersperformance.com/

Tman's site only shows their $995 CVO headwork, but Tman described to me the work he would do for $650, and it sounded like it was all the same stuff as Zippers mentioned.

It seems like the beehive springs are the way to go, but I'm not sure if different sized valves are needed, or if they will stick with the OEM size. I guess all of that will be decided by them.

Seems like a toss up to me which company to go with. Any thoughts?

Given the two choices.....I'd have zippers do them if they would put bronze guides in the exhaust...... Oversized valves bad idea

Yeah, I seem to remember my original builder telling me the valves are too big in the first place. Thought I remember GMR or someone changes just the exhaust valve size or something?

What do you recommend regarding valve size? Just for info, my build on my 2009 CVO will be the head work of course, set at 9.8 to 1 compression, TTS 100 cams, .010 overbore HD pistons, SE Heavy Breather AC, OEM catless ceramic coated headpipe, Rinehart mufflers with 2.25" cores.

For your build ? I would use the stock sizes both intake and exhaust if you are not having any port work done.

I would also check the stock valves and if serviceable regrind them and use them....If not either stock replacements or myself I use manley valves made to my specs.

What I was referring to was replacing the exhaust guide with a bronze exhaust guide.

There is an awful lot of guide  sticking out in the exhaust port and IMO cast iron is not a good material for the exhaust guide.

Zippers uses cast iron on both the intake and exhaust....I would ask them if they would use a bronze guide for the exhaust.

  heres why

I happen to think the world of John Sachs.   He did a build for me that's been nothing but amazing.   He has a passion for his work and a great reputation.      He is a member of this site,,,  I'd get in touch with him before anyone else.        Just saying,,,    Stuart

The cam is short and very close in specs to stock. Why not concentrate on high quality basic machine work with premium parts? Then you end up with heads that will equal or exceed the life of the rest of the motor.

I did my 107 build a while back and I really wanted to go with Tman. But their turn around was way longer than I could do. And I tried to talk to TR the owner about a few question before I did it. He was hard to reach and wouldn't return my call. I know everyone gets busy but I felt like they dropped the ball with me. After I my parts came it from elsewhere TR emailed me. LOL

I went with Harley Screaming Eagle CNC ported Heads. Part number 16500013A. 107cu in 10.5 compression pistons and Tman .625 cams. 58mm throttle body and 5.3 g/s inj's. D&D Borzilla exhaust. 118hp/121tq. It's a beast.
Basically bolt on performance out of the box.

Thats exactly what I want to do. I agree that I should insist on the bronze guides and beehives.

Are the bronze guides just for the exhaust, or use them for the intake valves as well?

Thanks for all the suggestions on here and by PM.

I will check out some other options and give those guys a call. Of course, if I do go with someone else, I will have to have my builders blessing.

We just finished a set of 110" heads for a 124"
AV&V 2.150"s intakes and turned a set of 1.700" exhausts down to the size we wanted.
We charge the same/same price as mentioned in the first post, except we blend/port as well.
