110 nearly bites the dust ??
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:50:51 AM »

On my way to the local Harley shop when the engine goes tic tic, ping ping, squeek squeek, scrape. After reading about lifters on this site I had a good idea as to what might be wrong. Lucky only 1k from the shop. Rode it in, had the mechanic listen yep shut it off sounds bad. Calls me up next day you are so lucky the rear exhaust lifter fail, ( i say lucky where does that come into it ? )cams toast, but the oil pump is ok, What do you want to do.
So guys any suggestions please as I'm on hold. The bike has 65000 kms on it year 2008.

That's not good, depending on your budget.
SE Cam bearings and Cam plate with high volume oil pump
New cams of course
SE Lifters or (S&S premium lifters if you can get them at a reasonable price...when I did my lifters as routine maintanence a few weeks ago they were over $400 a set so SE lifters went in).
SE premium adjustable push rods.

Was there any shrapnel from the failed lifter floating around and or was the lifter still intact?
I would have the engine thoughouly checked to see if an metal fragments got away.

Were they the original lifters?

I am sure the experts will chime in with some good advice.

That motor/oil tank needs to be flushed, the oil pan (if it's a bagger) dropped and thoroughly cleaned. If it were mine the pump and cam plate would be replaced.

Clean pan  , Cam plate should be replaced , measure lifter bores to make sure they are not damaged, drain crank case. I would flush the system several times with solvent. The issue is that many times the piston jet oiler will get plugged as its is being feed off the lifter feed galley. You can pull the lifters , plug the feeds and pop test the oiler. If it pops correctly flush it and move on. Tiny broken pieces in these engine can create a larger problem and many times its not up front but trapped debris cause issues alter on as well

Dyna
OK to clean the oil pan and replace the oil cooler. Flush all the passages.
Check crank runout and inspect the oil pump and cam plate, replace if worn. New SE inner cam bearings plus the cam and lifters

As I'm reading this, I can't help but to ask what things I can do to my bike NOW to prevent such failures later on. I've seen many people post about upgrading lifters? My bike is a 2013 with about 15k miles.

I don't mean to poach this thread and can start my own if the original poster prefers. If it's ok to go ahead and have that discussion here, that would be great.

Thank you!

My search for premium lifters from S&S also came up as "Tappets". This what I'm looking for?

S&S regular lifters are more than adequate for you.
Lots of choices on cams, depends on your riding style and motor set up.  If you have stock cams (SE 255) you can probably find a used set at a decent price.  Anything different from what you have now will require a dynotune.  Lots of choices out there

Awesome guys thanks, the lifter that failed looks good on the out side,we think 2 roller pins were gone I'll have to get the oil jets checked l didn't know that they were fed from the lifter feed,( this info you don't get from the dealer ) . The mechanic seems happy to flush the system, new cams, cam bearings, lifters, ahh cam plate is that needed ? But to get the full warranty they would like to rebuild the motor. Well I cannot afford that so we'll go for the she'll be right mate, as bad as it sounds. The dealer only wants to use oem parts so I should go screamin eagle lifters, the cams second hand dealers not interested. They have my bike I'm a bit bound by what they want but confident they will see me right. More so when I have the knowledge from the forum people. Fingers crossed. Will keep you informed

I would change the lifters and cam bearings without hesitation, knowing what I know now. The more information we discuss the better we will all be, so discuss away  I'm only too happy to help.

Use a good set of aftermarket lifters no matter what the dealer insists. If you use screamin eagle lifters you will be right back to where you are now down the road.

I've ran GMR lifters for 14,000 miles and they look as good as new. Doing some work on engine this winter and inspected lifters.
