Axtell has since discontinued there kit for whatever reason as I spoke with them on Monday.

Did you read their description on the 117 kit?
Almost sounded like this
You can use this kit , but expect so so results, engine may last a year may not. (117 Kit)
They didnt sound very confident
Or maybe its just me

I spoke with a machinist as Ron was headed home from the show & he was less than positive with the info on it. I've used their Mtn Motor package previously in a 107 so I know when he was downplaying it to look elsewhere!

Did he give you a feeling it was because of quality or reliability issue? Or possibly sales competition from the moco?

Just read an email from a builder I had inquired with. He said he wouldn't recommend it because of the pistons they are using. He hasn't had good results with it. So I guess the cylinders are ok.  This is a next winter project for me if it happens. We will see how the moco kits fair through till then.

Moco kit? What will the end components be? What did Larry say he is going to do to the heads. I've had different recommendations from changing the intake valve only, and to leaving the stock valves and just doing the port.

Port, set up for 650 lift (springs)  replace any items as needed & shipped intake for match porting. I requested the CNC port but not sure if it's available on 110 castings.   Moco pistons & cyls only

Yeah , I've been told the 110 casts are good as is but a little port and polish makes them better. Heard that from several builders.

I am being told that CVO heads are not a very good canvas to start from, if given a choice.  Two builders have told me now that the valves are actually a little bigger than preferred for max flow on a 117ci.  Of course there are work around tricks to make them perform, if you already have the castings, but one reputable builder said if I am buying new HD castings they'd rather start with 103 castings than CVO castings for my 117ci project.

I've had one tell me to leave valves the current size and 2 tell me I needed to take the intake larger. Each has his own preference. Also, I think cam choice makes a difference as well as tb size. The valves should be right size to compliment each of the others so everything flows a good as possible.

I think most reputable head porters would disagree with that assessment of the 110 heads...

x2.

GMR Performance says one of the big reasons his 113" runs so well is b/c the stock 110 intake valve is a little too large for 110.

thats what i was thinking also, when mine were done i went for the larger intake valve and raised the port roofs...cnc, ect. for me it has worked very well so far. do have to admit i am getting 117ci fever tho. think im going to wait and see how these kits play out before i make that call, im sure this one will be impressive when completed

From another thread on this forum, if this bloke told me the sun wasn't gunna come up I would go buy batteries.......

I have been porting H-D heads since 1978 {sold biz last year} anyway , I always liked to use 89-90 %  valve to seat ratio . The H-D 110" heads have a 93 % ratio on the intake !!!!!!! YOU WANT POWER ,CHEAP ?   Put in a 2.125 intake valve { H-D #  18190-08}  $15.50 ea. } that will get you a 90.5 % ratio and do a 4 angle seat cut ,  'mill' the heads .030-.040  and use a Cometic .030 head gasket and a cam.

let me 'spain' a little.  When you have 93% seat to valve {1.930 dia.} with a 2.080 valve ,you need to look HARD to see the 45 degree cut and forget about the 60 degree ! You have nothin but a big hole. Nothing to cut your angles on ,right ? By going with a bigger valve {.045 bigger}  you can do a 30-45-60-70 cuts. YES ?  THE STOCK VALVES ARE 'BACK CUT'  30 DEGREE. its all about making the Y , with the back cut on the valve and the cuts on the seat. Look at a Y , bigger on the top and then narrows down ,yes. Just remember 1 thing , 80% of your air flow is controlled by the valve and the seat. The only other way is to weld up the ports. The stock 110"  heads flow BAD. once you 'fix' the valve and the seat {cuts} they do fine. Whatever ,been doing this stuff for over 30 years, not trying to sell ANYTHING. Dewey
