If I remember correctly, I believe the dealer has 10 days from delivery to report the issue to the MOCO.

Well you have a bunch of opinions that are just that opinions and mean nothing to the outcome. Have the owner tell the dealer and see what he says. Looking at the photo, think a sheet of 2000 sandpaper, some water followed by a non-agressive foam buffing pad  on a orbital buffer would make it go away, but then that is another useless opinion. But don't fix it yourself.

Don:

From the looks of it it's a scrape that went throgh the clearcoat and the pearl paint.

I have seen this paint job on a new bike at the dealers.  In my experience he is going to require a new tank from he factory or nothing will match.

Who knows weather the transporter did it or it was undetected or done at the dealer during the $699 dealer set up (read wash job).  I am thinking that is their self funding for things like this that the factory doesn't cover.

Regards

Jerry

If I heard you correct, the dealer deliverd the bike. so if it looks or seems like it may be from a fuel nozzle, who fueled the bike? the dealership? I don't see how this can Not be there responsibility in any case, fuel nozzle or anything else. looks like nothing else is damaged, no scrapes or scrathes? could be a tool was dropped & hit it while doing dealer prep

It would be my guess is that this most likely happen either during the install of the heated grips or during the trailering for delivery.

With my dealing with Chester Springs, I would be surprised if they don't make it right.  They have always treated me fair.

Good Luck.

My baby brother made it back home from his cruise and immediately drooled all over his new bike. He wasn't too concerned about the mark on the tank. He was certain that the dealer would make it right. He made one phone call and they have agreed to come back and get the bike and fix it. Hopefully, it will happen quickly. I have passed on all the advice that you gentleman have so graciously offered. Thanx!

My younger brother just purchased a 2016 CVO Street Glide. He was out of town when the bike arrived at his house for delivery and I was responsible for receiving it. Later that night under better lighting in the garage I noticed a small blemish, a defect in the clear coat, on the bike's tank right below the gas cap. Perhaps a ding from a gas nozzle? My brother returns home on Tuesday and I'm not sure what, if anything, I can do about it? I left a phone message with the dealer but they are closed now do to the snow storm here on the east coast. Does anybody have some advice? I inspected the bike when it was unloaded from the trailer but who would think you needed to use a magnifying glass? Unfortunately, when it got dark in the garage, and the lights came on, this little smudge stands out like a sore thumb.  :(

My brother has still not driven his new CVO.  :nixweiss:
The defect in the paint requires new paint - or something? My brother was getting concerned because it has been taking so long and asked me to check on it because he lives two hours away from Hannum's in Media PA. When I stopped by (and took this picture) they were all: "No big deal! Couple of coats of clear coat and it will be better than new." When I asked what the delay was they could not answer me. The very next day they called to tell my brother that their painter was waiting on the specific paint color. He got all worked up about "matching the paint" and asked why they were not just replacing the tank. He was then told that was not an option. A month ago it was an option but it would take six weeks = what's up with that !?! This is turning into a real bummer.
Might be time your brother contacted H-D Customer Service - 414-343-4056 and start a claim. Hell, if they (dealer) would have ordered a new one right off the bat it's a good chance it would have arrived and been installed by now.

Replacing the tank is an option, because the same thing happened to me, only it was my outer fairing.  Local HD shop sent my fairing to their guru painter to fix a small blemish.  I wasn't happy with the outcome and neither was the HD service mgr, so they ordered a new fairing under warranty.

my 15 had a few blemishes, dealer took care of them. Some were not perfect but I wasnt too anal about it.
Its a bike, it will hopefully see the elements and eventually get damaged.

You seemed a bit over protective about the situation, how your bro appreciates it.

Thanks Fired00d for adding this to the correct thread. I have now attached the photo that I added to the other "Heated Grips" thread. Needless to say; it was heartbreaking seeing my brother's new bike stuffed away in a graveyard of other bikes awaiting repairs. I have encouraged my brother to contact HD Customer Service about a claim but he doesn't want to "create a stink." Needless to say; I'm upset about this because I received the bike and didn't spot the blemish and the dealership insists that nobody there "noticed it" (of course).

what he said, the paint job is allot of the cost of a CVO. to have a brand new bike touched up in such an obvious place is a big fat NO in my book. demand a new tank. If they don't have one available ride the bike with the damaged one until it arrives. Definitely contact HD customer service though, be firm in the request for a new replacement also.

Good Luck

I hope your brother gets a resolution to his problem.  At least it's at the dealership now it looks like.

The way I see it is like this, if it were a "flaw" in the paint from HD, a new tank would have been the first route the dealer would have taken.

But if it was a dealer "flaw", as in they scratched the tank while filling the tank, I see them going with a repaint or clearcoat overcoat and rub out as that's going to be the cheapest solution for the dealer.'

The fact that they're pushing the repaint touchup says to me that they created the issues, not HD.

Again good luck.

That can be the case in many instances.  Prep at most dealerships for new bikes doesn't have them go over it with a fine tooth comb.  The new owner will find things and get back with the dealer and/or HD customer service to address these kind of items.  If you (or your brother) have a good dealership, the customer should contact the dealer and THEY will work the process in getting the paint corrected.  That's not always the case but it should work this way.
I had two blemishes in the paint on my '15.  I did notice the one on the tank but not on the primary side saddlebag until I got home.  I took pictures of both areas from different angles and sent these to my dealer along with follow-up calls.  Since I was headed out on a long trip, I didn't want to bring the bike back until I returned however with the pictures and notification, they had what they needed.  They actually ordered both parts for me sight unseen.  I did bring it in after the trip so they could actually see the blemishes and agreed the tank and bag bottom were to be replaced.

The biggest deal in my instance was between the dealership and the mother ship.  The dealership fought with the home office on paying for these two painted replacement parts.  The MoCo stated the dealership should have attempted to "rub out" the areas before ordering replacements parts.  The dealership told the MoCo to pound sand (not the actual words used...I was standing there during one of the conversations) as it was a CVO and the customer paid for perfect paint, not a "rub out".  I think they finally came to an agreement with the MoCo covering the replacement parts but it took 6 months.

I'm just glad the dealer sided for me in my case (which is why I still purchase from them).  Not all dealers will.  I'm hoping the dealer in your case will do the right thing and replace the tank on your brother's bike.

Good luck

In 1989 I bought a New FXR-SP. After about 20k miles in less than a year the gas tank started leaking around where the Gas Guage wire came out. I raised a Stink and they replaced it free. Had to wait 3 weeks for them to paint the gas tank to match the old one.
End Result,  I was Happy Again
