Insurance
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:28:13 PM »

I don't know if there is a thread addressing this but I looked and could not find one. I live in PA and have some what I though were good rates. I have spoke to people in Delaware and they had great rates. I am starting to look for next year and am seing a rate increase. What is your experience out there. We drive some expensive bikes and some of us have more than one.

Post up and let us know.

I live in NC and have 3 bikes all valued over 25 grand I use Foremost Ins Co. They have great rates, never any problems with them. Do compare apples to apples and read the fine print.I happen to have a great agent that rides and watches out for his customers.

Dairyland, Progressive are very good companies.  Progressive used credit underwrting to develop a rate.  Be sure to check out a lower deductible on the physical damage.  You might be suprised that is not a lot of premium difference between a $250 and $500 deductible.  With Dairyland, in Texas, it was only $18 a year.  I thought the $250 was a pretty good buy.

Good luck

You might consider looking into "one stop" shopping and see if you can get a cut that way.  I have all vehicles, household, and property with State Farm and I can't complain about the rates.  We did some comparative shopping 3 years ago and no one else came close to the coverage we have for the price we pay...and that includes coverage on several expensive toys.

I do believe that half of the insurance battle is having a good/reliable agent that you can depend on and will go to bat for you in the rate department.  Most of the dim-wits out there are just going after sales/comissions and screw the pooch on service after the sale.  I mean not to offend any of the riding brothers here that may happen to sell insurance....it's just another one of my life's observations/hands-on experiences with some insurance dim-wits in the past.

Can't beat State Farm's REPLACEMENT VALUE policy if you go down. My opinion on insurance, is you get what you pay for when you go to collect. If you never have need to collect than the best price is your best buy, but when you need it don't go whining about abritrary value and Blue Book etc etc. You prove to State Farm what your vehicle will cost you to replace and they'll pay you minus whatever deductible you're carrying. I have six vehicles insured with them

This is good stuff folks thanks. Too bad we can't get a CVO riders group policy put together for us. I wonder if a state farm  agent would like that chance to use us as an intro for home auto and toys?

I agree its not so much what you pay but how you are taken care of when you need them!

Sound advice, Big B.   I had a claim with them (State Farm) about six years ago on a vehicle that burnt to the ground.  Being that it was of some collector value (1987 SS Monte Carlo Aerocoupe) we got an independent appraiser to come in and back up what I told them what I felt the car was worth.  After some going back and forth...I won out.  The key here to having these expensive toys and ensuring that you will recoup most/all that you have in them is to have/retain 1) current pictures  2) documentation/receipts of what has been added to the vehicle and 3) get a professional appraisal and finally, 4) keep it in a lock box or someplace safe.  Your butt will thus be covered!  BTW, an appraisal does not cost that much...anywhere from $35-75 in our part of the country...think of it as a little added insurance...when you need it.

They may be worth over 25K each but they don't have a gas cap like Nancy's with an insurance like provided from BB! [smiley=sauer019.gif] [smiley=sauer019.gif] [smiley=sauer019.gif] [smiley=sauer019.gif]

I can definitely recommend Foremost since they replaced my totaled out 2006 melon with a brand new 2007 Jester.  But I think some other companies have the same or similar deal - if your bike is totaled during the first two years and you've been insured with us since day one, yada, yada, yada, then we'll buy you a new one.  Doubt they get called on this very often but it did work out for me.

With that said (and I plan to stick with Foremost) I've had several other carriers.  No tickets, no accidents, no claims until this recent crash.  Funny that the first year's premium with Progressive and Dairyland was quite good but then the renewal was awful.  What changed?  I dunno.  Like I said no claims, no tickets, no accidents.  Go figure.

Rates are very, very dependent on where you live. And not just your metro area but your actual zip code.  I was in an unincororated area several years ago.  Did not move but came in to the city limits of a nearby town and my zip code changed.  Rates went down substantially.

You just gotta shop around.

I live in Iowa and my insurance is with American Family Insurance
I use American Family for my home, vehicles and scooter in which I tied a $3m umbrella to my complete insurance package
The scooter insurance is $440 per year with a $1k deductible due to I would never turn anything in for less than a $1k
If I have a claim for less than $1k no way am I going to make a claim as I believe claims = premium hikes
My umbrella has a rider on it if I am involved in a motorcycle accident and the other persons vehicle insurance is under insured my umbrella will kick in up to the $3m face value. I think the $3m umbrella is around $350 a year, with the under insured rider at about $55 bucks or so. The umbrella gives me some insurance that if I cause an accident they won't come after my net worth. Most insurance plans today cap at $300k and I just feel better with additional coverage for such a small premium.

I agree make sure you find a agent that is customer focused and not all one sided for the company he writes for.

I use Progressive and have three bikes on the policy:  2007 SEUC, 2003 SE Duece & 2003 Road King w/ a Lehman Trike Conversion, 103 Stroker Kit.  We pay about $1,400 per year and we live in Maryland.  Probably should shop around.
