New Member wanting to lower rear of 2008 CVO Ultra Glide
« on: April 22, 2016, 03:25:26 PM »

Hi guys, just bought my friends 2008 CVO Ultra Glide SE with 20,000 kms on it.
He added S&S cams and a Power Tuner and Slip ons.
I also have a Bourget Chopper for around town.
I was wanting to lower the bike a bit and wonder if you have done the same in the back.
The bike has the Air suspension and hope that still allows me to use one of the lowering kits out there.
Currently I am looking at the Burly Brand B28-42007.
Does any one have any experience or advice for me.
Thanks so much

First of welcome to CVOHarley when you get a chance you should go to the New Member Introduction and start a thread to introduce yourself.

As for lowering your bike... what are your reasoning for wanting to lower it (especially since it now has air ride)? Most want to lower the bike for slow speed riding and stops (IE: being able to be flat-footed during those times). If you are just wanting it for looks then you will be giving up ground clearance when riding if you do lower the bike.

The Bike sits too high with 15 psi in the shocks.
I need to touch the ground better.

If it has air ride already on the rear why not just let some of the air out during the time(s) you need to be flat footed... that way you have the best of both worlds. More than likely that was the reason the original owner put the air ride on it. :nixweiss:

Hi, I am trying not to get mad here.
I asked a specific question and posted in a specific area.
First my thread was moved to a general area about suspension that many people don't know the bike I have and I will get silly answers and questions.
Second, You keep asking me questions that I don't need to be asked.
I don't understand and to me, its frustrating.
I am on many forums with all of my vehicles and have been for years and have never gone through this.
I wish my post be put back in the proper forum pertaining to my bike and everyone there knows that the CVO comes with Air suspension.
I just want feed back from people who know what they are talking about regarding this bike.
And from people who have lowered the same bike.
Thanks so much.
Regards and have a great weekend.

First of I was only trying to help, second we have specific boards for specific topics (IE: suspension) which your post was moved to, third had you said you were speaking of the stock suspension vs "air" (which to most here would imply aftermarket air ride) you probably wouldn't have been asked more questions (seeking more detail). Sorry if you are getting frustrated but if you had taken the time to learn more about the forum (where to post) and how members try to assist in getting details to properly answer queries you probably wouldn't be getting frustrated.

You too have a great weekend, and good luck.

Trevor I believe it was pretty obvious to the casual reader that Gary was asking the question in trying to help you.  Had he not asked those questions we would not know that what you meant by "Air suspension" was merely OEM air shocks.  Not speaking for Gary but I believe, at least for me, that's where the confusion came from.  When people speak or "air suspension" they're usually referring to something like Legend Suspension and not the stock OEM air shocks.  I hope your frustration is in not getting an immediate answer to your question and not that your fuse is to short to truely understand the line of Gary's questions of you.

Stick around Trevor......you're going to learn more about that new (to you) CVO Ultra Classic than any Harley dealership could ever tell you.  And from these owner/riders, for the most part it will be fact and not merely because they're trying to sell you something or simply because they don't know the answer and have to big of an ego to admit it.  This place is a wealth of information and you're about to learn that, now that we know what you really meant.

One other thing before I offer my suggestion to your question....your post is now in the correct place and most here know the answer to your question even though they may not ride a CVO Ultra Classic like you and I do.....they make them for all models.  You might read the rules for posting to learn the ins and outs, the dos and don'ts on this forum.   You can find the Rules For Posting by clicking on this link....    http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=2539.0

My suggestion for your original question.....there are several ways of getting that rear lowered but I believe the most common would be Legend Suspension.  It will drop your fender right down on your tire and several of our members have this system.  I suggest having somebody install this that's installed on an Ultra Classic before because they'll know to relocate your wiring, etc. up inside your rear fender.    You can find them here....

You might do a search on this forum for "Legend"  to find threads like this

Trevor...

I run rear Legend Air Suspension on my 2007 SEUC.  This suspension allows my bike to be at full height and full suspension travel when rolling down the road, but also allows me to lower the rear suspension of my bike when in town, in parking lots and at red lights or stop signs.  The rear suspension will drop up to a couple inches, but still provides sufficient clearances when lowered.  The compressor controls are conveniently located and can be operated to both raise and lower on the fly.  Installation is quite simple if you are at all mechanically inclined.  Your 2008 SEUC installation would be identical to mine.  I also run Traxxion front forks lowered 1".  I am just under 6 foot, but have a 30" inseam, so reaching the road can be challenging with my bike at stock height. This combination works perfectly for me.  Good luck!  If you choose to go this route, feel free to pm me with any questions..

Hey, Trevor!  Welcome to the Site!  Get you a set of Progressive 944HD's, or Ohlins.  You can lower it an inch with 12" Shocks, or 1 1/2", with 11 1/2" Shocks.  The air shocks that come on them are junk.  Some may disagree, but they've never riden hard enough to know better.  If you are planning on riding hard and fast, get rid of those stock shocks.  Later--HUBBARD

Thanks guys, I'll get the Burley rear lowering kit for now
Burley themselves where not able to tell me if that kit would work on the CVO with Stock Air shocks.
Thats why I came to the experts.
The only info Burley could tell me was to measure my stock air shocks and if they where 13", then it would work, and they are 13" long.

For now I want to keep the bike stock, even took off the Vance & Hines last night and installed the stock screaming eagle slip ons.
Now i can hear the stereo and have peace of mind of not getting a sound violation Ticket here in Edmonton.
Its still has the bite to it, but the neighbors wont throw rocks at me....lol.

Thanks for everyone that has posted and all have a great weekend!

I changed my mind and just ordered a Legend Aero FL kit with the chrome switch.
Should be interesting once I get it and installed.
Thanks for all the advice!

The Burly way is prolly least expensive way to lower one inch but will not work with say a Road King Classic because of the angle of the shock and the back of the saddle bags as there is a section molded on the back of the bag so the new angle will interfere when you install the Burly blocks as they change that angle. Also may be the same on a factory lowered model. So you need to check the application of what you use. If you really want more you can add the small air cylinder to the Legend shocks the cylinder will fill first which will allow instant raising instead of waiting forever for the compressor to fill raising the rear of your bike. I think the site is Dirty Air where you can see how this works. For me the stock Legends just pump up way to slow especially if you want to dump the air at traffic lights and ride 2-up as it rides like a hardtail until they slowly pump back up while you are pushing the button. So depending on what you want there are several options to help you. Hope this info helps you.
