Overspray Removal?????
« on: May 07, 2016, 11:43:57 PM »

Spray painted some metal cabinets with my airless sprayer and thought I had the bike parked far enough away.   The next day, I noticed that the wind drifted a fine mist of overspray on to the bike.  I checked the internet for the best possible remedy and there are several approaches.  Some are:

1. Clay Brick
2. Easy Off
3. Finger Nail Polish
4. Acetone
5. Paint Thinner
6. Gasoline

In general, from what I read, acetone works the best but it has to be a base coat/clear coat paint job to start.  Then be extremely careful, not a lot of elbow grease.

The clay brick also had high regards but seemed to be designed for small areas.

This is the most knowledgeable forum in the world, so I'm sure there are experts that have handled this situation with great success.

Thanks,

Cowboy

No pro just personal opinion based on experience.  I like the clay bar then a polish then wax.  It all depends on how much overspray you have.  Just start with the least aggressive and work your way up.

CowboyBagger, don't use any of the mentioned products on your paint except maybe clay bar. You might want to buy a trusted nonabrasive polish that is okay for clear coats. If you have to knuckle under and use some sort of paint thinner first mix 50% with water, then squeeze out your cloth and try on an inconspicuous place then wait a while to see what happens.  I worked in an autobody shop briefly when I was in high school and that is what we used for detailing overspray. Overspray on two-stage paint (base coat/clear coat) is no longer a problem like it was a couple decades ago. A good clay bar using a lubricant, I like spray detailer for lubricant, will take it right off with NO damage to the paint surface. No problem there.
Several companies now have clay bar specifically for auto glass, I am sure it is just a less abrasive grade of clay, It is pretty amazing how much crap will come off a clean just washed windshield using this approach, has nothing to do with bike I just wanted to share. I use clay bar on car/bike weekly. Great product.

I agree with the "clay bar" and using a detailer as the lubricant.  Take your time and wax when finished.

Had a spray in liner put in my truck and it had over spray all over the roof and hood when I got it back. A clay bar took it all off without a scratch. The clay bar was black when I was done! Just buy a spray wax and put plenty on and take your time. Any solvent is going to soften the paint and do damage unless you are extremely lucky.

Would Royal Blue detailing spray wax be a good lubricant?

I have never tried it but have used various other spray waxes and they all worked fine.

Royal Blue detailer would work (as would plain ol' soap and water, actually), but if you don't have a clay bar, Mother's sells a bar and detailer together.  Should be able to find at most auto parts stores.

Amazon did have the Mothers Clay Bar kit on sale for about $12. Inc two clay bars and a bottle of spray detailer. Not a real aggressive clay so it works well for first time users.

Gotta love the cinnamon smell of their detailer, too.  :2vrolijk_21:

Try the clay bar and mix some Dawn Liquid Soap and use that for your lubricant. Dawn will help break down everything on your paint without harming it. Be sure to rewax your bike with a quality wax.
