Pushing Fuel Limit Almost Ended Up Pushing The Bike
« on: June 01, 2016, 09:42:32 PM »

Went out riding today (ok, get over that shock :)) and during the ride I noticed the fuel light come on and thought I would/could make it to my usual station.... Needless to say while on the Bypass I felt the bike sputter and my @$$ cheeks tighten. Luckily I was near an exit and when I got to the bottom of the ramp there was no traffic and I was able to make it to a gas station. I guess watching the 100th Indy 500 I was inspired by Alexander Rossi and not stop to fuel when I should have... luckily for both of us it worked out... at least I didn't have to get a tow to the winners circle. :D :D

See below of how much fuel my bike took. :shocked2:

I've done that also Gary, and it's nerve-wracking!  It's also suppose to be bad for the fuel pump to be without the fuel to cool it.  Since I learned of this aspect, I've tried to fill up more often.  :vrolijk_15: spyder

Gary, entirely for the FWIW type of info that's just convenient to keep track of a few of us have ran out on a SEEG or other five gallon tank bikes.  Someone who looked a lot like me on a gorgeous and brand new red SEEG literally leaving the dealership the first time coasted in to the closest station to that dealership.  Dead empty it took 5.495 gallons.  A few others have mentioned filling up and feeding the bike about 5.5 gallons at dead empty.  My old SERG has taken 5.3 and was still running.  In my head I still only count them as taking 5 gallons though.  The rest is a reserve I try to never use.

when I was new to distance riding, Guilty of that on my 03 Road King going across Nebraska heading to Billings Montana,  Nebraska/Wyoming state line sign insight, Sputter, sputter,  clutch in, Kill Switch, coast into gas station. First and last time I have cut it that close(knock on wood) or not checked my routes for gas stations and mileages.

Some of us like to know what quantity of fuel is left when the fuel low-light pops on.  The next variable then becomes: how much fuel-saving am I going to do?   har!  spyder

Since i normally depart with a full fuel tank and not touring, 200 mile or so rides, i am really never in that position.

But i've sweated fuel in both airplanes and helicopters to many times, because of the mission, (before GPS equipment, cell phones and other electronic gadgets) and i don't care how many times you check your position on the map (a real map), ground speed, distance remaining, fuel remaining etc., re calculate with your E6B, whiz wheel, it never gets better.

I know stuff happens, but i'm done pushing fuel limits, especially for fun. ;D

I posted because reading the OP's comment about Pucker, i related, even with GPS (in aircraft) the pucker isn't any better.

I only had the fuel light come on once, that was on my 09 RK and I had that pucker factor going on. On my current ride 12 FLHTK when out on the road I tend to stop and top off fuel around the half to 1/4 full. Since my bladder tell me to stop, I just do the prudent thing and put some gas in my ride.

I ran out of gas with my 09 RKC, fuel tank still showed 1/2 tank, went to the dealer and was told no fuel gauge on any Harley is accurate. He repeated that statement even after I told him my 03 RKC and 08 Ultra both were very accurate.
So having the factory # in my phone I called and talked with tech service about this. Later that day the dealer called to let me know a new sending unit was on it's way.
My 15 low light comes on when about 3/4 of a gallon is left.

Neat gas can, I've got one.  If I lived out your way, I'd carry it in my saddlebag all the time 'cause the stations are few and far between out 'West'. :nervous:  har!  spyder
