If I don't like the results, I'll just remove them again for the fully open effect.

if worse comes to worse, the vent doors are only about $15 each brand new.

Sounds like folks here are ready to give theirs away.

Marty suggested I take them off years ago, 110 runs cooler with no problems.

are you sure it's running cooler?  or is it that it feels cooler to you?  those two are not necessarily the same.  a few years back, I was doing the same thing, so I did a bunch of searching.  not sure where I found it, but found a good study where a guy had done some very specific measuring with highly specialized and accurate equipment and found that with the doors closed, more air was forced over the cooling fins and the engine temps were lower.  on the flip side, because of the doors being closed, and more heat being pulled off the engine, it felt hotter to the rider.  but if he opened the vent doors, his perception of heat went down, but less air was being funneled directly to the engine and engine temps were higher.

he did this several times, and was able to get repeatable results.  now, granted, the engine temps were not drastically higher or lower, it was in the neighborhood of 1-2*, so really not anything to get worked up over.

I feel like removing the doors brought more are in for me and the motor. Taking the lowers off completely gave more air than I wanted on me. And I don't have to constantly check them every time I get off the bike usually to re open them as they would vibrate partially closed while I rode. :nixweiss:

I read something like this awhile back in a couple different publications.  With the new design of the lowers it actually forced more air over the fins of the motor blowing/wicking heat away from the motor and that's what the rider is feeling.  With the lowers off (and I can only assume the same applies when the doors are removed) the majority of air passes around the sides of the motor and the rider feels more comfortable but the motor is in fact running hotter.

Same for me. I considered trimming them but after I took them off I decided to just leave them off. I have no idea how having the doors closed improves airflow over the engine  :nixweiss: I do know having the doors off improves airflow over my legs. Even in cold weather there is plenty of heat from the engine to stay warm.

It's those little "winglets" on the inboard edge that direct more airflow towards the engine's cooling fins when the lower's vents are closed. they perform the same function when the vents are open also but the effect is most pronounced when they are closed.
