Tire advice
« on: June 08, 2016, 12:52:30 PM »

I'm due for front and rear tires on my FLHRSE5. I understand there is the proprietary HD Dunlop tire they come stock but want to know if the Dunlop American Elite in the proper size would be an acceptable, and hopefully less expensive, alternative?

Dunlop now offers both your sizes in the American Elite series, and yes those would be appropriate for your bike.  The front is Dunlop part number 31AE15, 130/60B19 61H, and the rear is Dunlop part number 35AE01, 180/55B18 80H.  Prices will vary by seller, do an internet search using those Dunlop part numbers.

Thanks Jerry, I looked 'em up at Dennis Kirk and J&P, prices were identical. Local shop will come within a couple bucks of on-line tire sources and mounting is half the HD shop rate. The American Elite from the local shop are $60 less than the stock HD front tire and $80 less for the rear tire so I'm going local :-)

Beautiful bike! :2vrolijk_21:  I just ordered the American Elites, front and back, from Jake Wilson. Great prices, free shipping, no tax, and they file the $40 dollar Dunlop discount for you! :bananarock:

Hey wyobadger, how about a couple of close ups of those tires mounted on your bike. Trying to decide between them and the Michelins.

I just put a set of the American elites on  before taking a 2500 mile road trip to va.  very happy with the performance out of these tires.  hopefully, they won't cup as much as the original dunlops did.  had plenty of tread, but were cupped badly enough that it made for a crappy ride.  had 20,000 miles on the tires though, so not much to complain about.  we did get caught in the rain during this trip, but since it was interstate, and then quickly became stop and go (2 miles in 1 hr  :confused5:) not really much to base wet performance on.

Have 15k miles on my stock Dunlops and although I could probably get another 1-2k miles, the rear is cupped so badly that I'm changing them out next week with AE's. Be aware that the Dunlop "$40 rebate" turns out to be in the form of a VISA card with a $40 limit LOL ::) Not what I was expecting.

Spends like money to me! :orange:  My 407 was defective with cracks at 11K (similar to what other's have posted and I have seen on Youtube.  I hadn't noticed until it was brought to my attention by the tuner that the tire was out of round.  All damage was at one point (section) of the tire.

I got my new American Elites, today! :bananarock:

This may be discussed already, but what size tire and which manufacturer is everyone running?  I just switched from a cvo breakout to a cvo street glide.

after 20k on the stock tire, I just switched to the Dunlop American elite, stock size, 180/55-18.  the stock tire still had some good tread left, but was cupped enough that I would get some rear 'wobble' on sweeping turns on the highway.  nothing really white knuckling, but enough.

after changing the tires, both front and rear, I really noticed how much my bike was 'fighting' me when I rode it.  I've only got 4000 miles on the new set, but i'm very much pleased with their performance.

It's really come down to American Elite's or Michelin Commander II's.  The most positive feedback across all the Harley forums have been with these two, and I've read good reviews with both.  Seems like the AE's have gotten really good marks with wet weather performance on top of all the other qualities.  I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Wow, two great looking bikes, to own!  I would definitely would opt for the CVO SG between the two though.

Have a 2015 CVO deluxe just changed tires at 2800 miles reason stock dunlops were all over the place meaning felt like slip sliding on every thing plus they would track bad. Put on some metzler 888 as soon as I left the Harley stealer bike feels like a Cadillac huge difference over the dunlops. Hit every tar snake I could no slipping have to wait until full sun it was partly cloudie but temp was close to 90. Went for a ride down my favorite highway I-69 concrete and some parts that are heavly grooved they did fine on light grooves but when I hit the heavy grooved butt puckered feels like riding on ice but they did not track.Way better than the dunlops still need to build my confidence on michigans grooved highways. Bottom line put 200 miles on the 888s and like them. Also the rear Dunlop was cupping maybe my fault from twisting the wick lol.

Has anyone run the American elite long enough to see if they cup and roar like the stockers when they get some miles? I'm going on a 1800 mile trip in September and want to replace both mine. Front has over 24,000. No complaints there. Rear is much newer, has good tread but howls in turns. Can't stand that in the mountain curves. It's got to go!
I was settled on the Michelins but every place that I've tried is out of stock. One place said until October!
If anyone knows where the Michelins are in stock pm me!!
